In vitro retentive strength of zirconium oxide ceramic crowns using different luting agents
2005
Statement of problem In contrast to gold crowns, in vitro determination of the retentive strength of all-ceramic crowns is more difficult because components allowing connection to testing apparatus are not as easily integrated into the all-ceramic material. Nevertheless, retentive strength data are crucial for obtaining information about the potential clinical performance of luting cements for all-ceramic restorations. Therefore, a new in vitro model was necessary to evaluate the retentive strength of all-ceramic crowns. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the retentive strength of 4 resin-cement systems, a compomer, a glass-ionomer cement, a resin-modified glass-ion…
Zinc removal in anaerobic sulphate-reducing liquid substrate process
2002
Abstract Zinc and sulphate removal from synthetic wastewater was investigated by using four laboratory parallel upflow-mode reactors (referred as R1 to R4; R1 contained carriers to retain biomass, whereas R2–R4 were operated as suspended reactors). All reactors were inoculated with anaerobically digested cow manure. R1 and R2 were first fed with glucose- and sulphate-containing feed for 48 days after which all four reactors were fed with wastewater containing 50 mg l−1 of zinc in R1–R3 and 200 mg l−1 in R4 and operated for 96 days. In all reactors, hydraulic retention time, organic loading rate, and sulphate load were 5–6 d, 0.2–0.4 kg COD m−3 d−1 and 3.3–3.8 g SO4 l−1 d−1, respectively, wh…

CHANGING SCHOOL AFTER THE GLOBAL RECESSION : THE CASE OF LATVIA
2015
Latvia demonstrates common trends with the majority of the countries affected by the recession, as well as some peculiarities in overcoming the impact of the global economic and financial recession on education mainly due to an unbelievable austerity. Education in this country has suffered greatly, and its damage is adequate to the 67% of the budget cuts between 2008 and 2011 (IZM, 2011). The article deals with the school improvement after the recession, recent implementation of innovations to cover the damages and catch up with the ideas of the Next Generation learning, to supply schools with the appropriate curricula and meeting the learners needs for their individual development and abil…
Can Auditors Be Independent? – Experimental Evidence on the Effects of Client Type
2012
Recent regulatory initiatives stress that an independent oversight board, rather than the management board, should be the client of the auditor. In an experiment, we test whether the type of client affects auditors’ independence. Unique features of the German institutional setting enable us to realistically vary the type of auditors’ client as our treatment variable: we portray the client either as the management preferring aggressive accounting or the oversight board preferring conservative accounting. We measure auditors’ perceived client retention incentives and accountability pressure in a post-experiment questionnaire to capture potential threats to independence. We find that the type …
Market-driven product and service design: Bridging the gap between customer needs, quality management, and customer satisfaction
2000
Bridging the gap between a firm's internal quality improvements and external measures of customer needs and satisfaction is an important yet complex translation process. The process has traditionally been studied within two very different domains. An external focus on customers has been the domain of marketers. Manufacturing and engineering-based approaches to quality management and improvement have traditionally taken a more internal, process improvement focus. Both areas have recognized the need to broaden thier focus and bridge the gap between internal quality and external customers needs and satisfaction. This paper offers a framework to integrate these two domains. A case study is pres…
RAPPORTO ENERGIA 2015 Monitoraggio sull’energia in Sicilia
2015
L’export petrolifero è diminuito in termini nominali a causa …
Improved growth performance in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss reared at high densities is linked to increased energy retention
2015
Abstract Behaviour has been suggested as an underlying factor influencing how rearing density affects growth performance in Salmonid fishes. At low densities there is an elevated intensity of aggressive interactions and the formation of dominance hierarchies. As density increases, it is commonly assumed that aggression decreases, as the cost and effort required to establish and maintain dominance hierarchies increase. The increased energy expenditure associated with aggressive interactions has been identified as one mechanism causing a reduced efficiency in feed utilisation and therefore decreased growth performance. Manipulating aggressive behaviour through density may have advantages from…
An implant-supported overdenture design with a horizontal path of insertion
2013
The rehabilitation of the atrophic maxilla by means of implant-supported prostheses cannot always be achieved with fixed prostheses because of anatomic, esthetic, or economic issues, so for some patients the treatment of choice is a removable prosthesis. This article analyzes a new design for implant-supported overdentures with horizontal or faciolingual insertion. Its retention system is based on frictional forces or stepped interlocking horizontal surfaces and is appropriate for patients with skeletal Class II or III relationships with severe maxillary atrophies. The design facilitates implant-prosthetic hygiene and improved esthetics in patients with nonparallel implants by hiding abutme…
Engaging learners through virtual worlds
2010
Abstract The aim of this paper is to explore how virtual worlds could support the engagement for learning. This paper reviews the results of studies that utilized virtual worlds to engage learners. The results are examined in two levels, namely learning gains and design principles. It has been found out that deeper learner engagement results in higher learning gains. In some studies better content retention is also noted. Many studies also suggest design principles for using virtual worlds for facilitating engaged learning. This paper builds a framework for the design and use of virtual worlds in education for better learner engagement.
