The consequences of regulation of desat1 expression for pheromone emission and detection in Drosophila melanogaster.
2010
AbstractSensory communication depends on the precise matching between the emission and the perception of sex- and species-specific signals; understanding both the coevolutionary process and the genes involved in both production and detection is a major challenge. desat1 determines both aspects of communication—a mutation in desat1 simultaneously alters both sex pheromone emission and perception in Drosophila melanogaster flies. We investigated whether the alteration of pheromonal perception is a consequence of the altered production of pheromones or if the two phenotypes are independently controlled by the same locus. Using several genetic tools, we were able to separately manipulate the tw…
Female Visibility in the Mafia World: Press Review 1980 to 2001
2007
One way to analyze the recent evolution of the female role in organized crime is to review the press coverage of that theme during the period 1980-2001. The choice of this period was guided by the consideration that investigations and observations have shown this period to be one of the most interesting for the study of the phenomenon, since it is precisely during this time that the participation of women in mafia-type criminal activities seems to have become more visible and frequent. The paper explores the nature and characteristics of the female role within the mafia organization along with its centrality. The difficulty in collecting information on the daily life of mafia women has led …
Presentación del Monográfico: una mirada a la emigración española cualificada reciente: Estado de la cuestión y enfoques teóricos
2018
The study of qualified emigration has returned to the political and scientific agendas in recent decades. Currently the theoretical approaches have changed from a completely renewed economic, political, social and technological context. This article presents a summary of these new approaches and a current overview of skilled migration of Spaniards, based on a review of the specialized literature.

Earnings Quality in Nonprofit Versus For-Profit Organizations: Evidence From the Microfinance Industry
2013
This study uses data from the microfinance industry to analyze differences in earnings quality between for-profit and nonprofit organizations. The two sets of organizations differ with respect to both governance mechanisms and managerial incentives, and little research has been conducted to investigate how such differences affect the quality of financial reporting. Overall, we find little evidence of differences in earnings quality between our two samples in the aggregate. We do, however, observe significant differences among the types of nonprofit organizations; this finding suggests that the concept of a “nonprofit level of earnings quality” is ill defined.

Future directions in international financial integration research - A crowdsourced perspective
2018
This paper is the result of a crowdsourced effort to surface perspectives on the present and future direction of international finance. The authors are researchers in financial economics who attended the INFINITI 2017 conference in the University of Valencia in June 2017 and who participated in the crowdsourcing via the Overleaf platform. This paper highlights the actual state of scientific knowledge in a multitude of fields in finance and proposes different directions for future research.

Approaches to model the retention and peak profile in linear gradient reversed-phase liquid chromatography.
2012
Abstract The optimisation of the experimental conditions in gradient reversed-phase liquid chromatography requires reliable algorithms for the description of the retention and peak profile. As in isocratic elution, the linear relationship between the logarithm of the retention factor and the solvent contents is only acceptable in relatively small concentration ranges of modifier. However, more complex models may not allow an analytical integration of the general equation for gradient elution. Alternative approaches for modelling the retention in linear gradient elution are here proposed. Those based on the quadratic logarithmic model and a model proposed for normal liquid chromatography yie…
