Parliamentarisation as Politicisation

2021

Understanding politics as a contingent and controversial activity, politicisation refers to those activities that create or make visible the political quality in the phenomena in question. Parliamentarisation is a distinct strategy of politicisation. In this chapter, parliament refers to a certain procedural and institutional ideal type of acting politically. The parliamentary way of politicising acting and thinking forms a Gedankenbild, a mental image. It is an ideal type that one-sidedly accentuates and intensifies the political way of thinking. The parliamentary way of proceeding politically transcends the given polity: ‘parliament’ is not primarily a parliament ‘of’ a unit, such as the …

The Need for More Rhetoric in the Public Sphere. A Challenging Thesis About Post-Truth

2018

Since it hit the headlines and aroused the interest of scholars, the phenomenon of posttruth has received two main different interpretations: someone has observed that in the phenomenon there is nothing really new: lies and fakes are always existed and the only real difference is represented by the speed with which today, thanks to the means of communication, they spread. Others, on the other hand, have emphasized the close relationship between postmodernism and post-truth, arguing that the first one is the ideological background of the second one. Our paper aims to show that in order to frame post-truth in the right perspective, we need the theoretical framework offered by the rhetoric. In…

Children in the visual coverage of the European refugee crisis: A case study of the World Press Photo 2016

2018

Shifts in the visual coverage of refugees arriving in Europe and prominent compassion fatigue emphasize the need to examine visual strategies utilized to report on the crisis. This study focuses on representations of refugee children using a case of the World Press Photo (WPP) 2016. The material was interpreted with a model for visual rhetorical interpretation of journalistic photographs. Findings indicate the main visual elements involved in representing refugee children: visual trope of the migrant father, relation between children and barriers, visual oxymoron (juxtaposition of contradictory elements) and atmosphere in photographs. Findings suggest that photographs address polemics speci…

Deeds not words’: Emmeline Pankhurst and the vote for women

2013

Women born in the nineteenth century had little chance of escaping the role that was considered their destiny - to marry young, stay home and raise a family. Campaigners like Millicent Fawcett and Elizabeth Garret Anderson carried out a personal and largely peaceful struggle to improve chances of an education and open professions like medicine to women. In the early part of the century ‘the suffragists’ were unsuccessful in their immediate objective, although they still exist in the form of one of the British main research and lobbying groups working on behalf of women, the Fawcett Society. In 1889, an English woman Emmeline Pankhurst founded the Women's Franchise League, which fought to al…

The Role of Pronouns in Political Communication

2004

The eikos between Logic and Rhetoric. A Comparison between Aristotle and the Rhetorica ad Alexandrum.

2010

The paper proposes a comparison between the Aristotelian concept of eikos and that which is found in the Rhetorica ad Alexandrum. The aim is to shed light upon both the differences between the two perspectives and their relative continuity in relation to the prior tradition. The basic assumption is that the rhetorical notion of eikos has theoretical worth and many philosophical questions revolve around it. The boundary between philosophy and rhetoric is much less defined than what a long tradition has led us to believe.

Retoriskās iezīmes veselīgās ēdināšanas uzņēmumu interneta reklāmas rakstos

2022

2017

In Apologia Apuleius’s speech shows a rich ‘geography’: private homes, shops, villas and inns are the ingredients of a rhetorical strategy aimed at emphasizing the cultural and ethical distance between accusation and defense. An important role is played by the topical contrast between the country and the city, used to make a strong impact on the public and on the judge and to dismantle and discredit 'a priori' the accusations. In Apologia, therefore, the places are not only the background to the trial but are also conceived as a scenery of the word and as a ‘visual’ instrument to outline the parties involved.

Ekskurs VIII.

Uzyskano wyniki: Ez 3,16-21: A, A’, B, B’ lub A, B, A’, B’; Ez 33,1-20: A, B, B’, A’; Ez 33,2-6: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, H’, G’, F’, E’, D’, C’, B’, A’; Ez 33,7-20: A, B, C, D, E, F, E’, D’, C’, B’, A’.
