Understanding the Role of Sensorimotor Beta Oscillations
2021
Beta oscillations have been predominantly observed in sensorimotor cortices and basal\ud ganglia structures and they are thought to be involved in somatosensory processing\ud and motor control. Although beta activity is a distinct feature of healthy and pathological\ud sensorimotor processing, the role of this rhythm is still under debate. Here we review\ud recent findings about the role of beta oscillations during experimental manipulations (i.e.,\ud drugs and brain stimulation) and their alteration in aging and pathology. We show how\ud beta changes when learning new motor skills and its potential to integrate sensory input\ud with prior contextual knowledge. We conclude by discussing a n…
Porifera Lectins: diversity, physiological roles and biotechnological potential
2015
An overview on the diversity of 39 lectins from the phylum Porifera is presented, including 38 lectins, which were identified from the class of demosponges, and one lectin from the class of hexactinellida. Their purification from crude extracts was mainly performed by using affinity chromatography and gel filtration techniques. Other protocols were also developed in order to collect and study sponge lectins, including screening of sponge genomes and expression in heterologous bacterial systems. The characterization of the lectins was performed by Edman degradation or mass spectrometry. Regarding their physiological roles, sponge lectins showed to be involved in morphogenesis and cell intera…
Lessons Learned Using Theory of Mind Methods to Investigate User Social Awareness in Virtual Role-Play
2009
Theory of mind (ToM) methods were used to investigate children’s interpretations of the social and emotional states of synthetic pedagogical characters, focusing on children’s cognitive and affective empathic responses to characters in bullying scenarios and their social awareness and understanding of the characters’ situations. Although cognitive approaches typically do not consider user social awareness and emotional understanding and their roles in interaction, this is critical for our research on empathic engagement. We present a novel approach focusing on story and character comprehension using concepts from ToM methods to understand children’s interpretations of characters within virt…
Finnish students' multiliteracy profiles
2004
Finnish students' multiliteracy profiles are examined from the perspectives of both traditional printed reading and Internet activities in the light of the data collected as a national option integrated into the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2000 study. After reciting some previous findings on reader profiles as revealed by the initial international analyses of PISA data, the perspective is widened to encompass multiliteracy, which is defined according to the sociocultural view. Based on responses to a survey questionnaire, students were grouped by cluster analysis into six distinct clusters according to the frequency with which they read diverse printed materials an…
Wykorzystanie koncepcji profilaktyki pozytywnej w pracy opiekuńczo-wychowawczej domu dziecka
2021
Fallow deer in Sicily: recent history, consistence and ecological role
2020
The fallow deer extends far beyond its original range due to recurrent extinctions and reintroductions. In Sicily, the species became extinct in the 19th century and reintroduced at the beginning of 1980. Individuals were initially restricted to fenced areas, however, many escaped and began rapid colonization. Here we report fallow deer population estimations in two areas comprising the bulk of individuals in Sicily: the Madonie mountains and the Ficuzza Nature Reserve, and we discuss the potential impacts and solutions. The data we collected confirm that fallow deer populations are in marked expansion in both areas, particularly in the Madonie. Compared to their initial range, fallow deer …
SY26-4REVIEWING THE NEUROBIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF SALSOLINOL: ROLE OF THE MU OPIOID RECEPTORS
2015
During the last decades Salsolinol (SAL), a condensation product from dopamine (DA) and acetaldehyde that appears in the brain of humans and rodents as a consequence of brain metabolism of ethanol, has been proposed as a key component in the development of alcohol use disorders. Although evidence has been published …
Oggetti interni e reaction objects come nomi predicativi di costrutti a verbo supporto
2011
Analyses regarding clauses with a cognate object (CO), e.g. Alice laughed a scornful laugh, have frequently been based on the query: is the CO an adjunct or a complement? This paper aims to contribute to the debate with an alternative suggestion: the CO functions as a noun predicate licensing the subject, to which it assigns a semantic role, whilst the verb functions as a support (a ‘light verb’). A number of the well-known properties of COs, e.g. certain constraints on the determiner, appear to corroborate this analysis. Clauses with the so-called reaction object (RO), e.g. Alice coughed a scornful laugh, are analyzed as multi-predicative as well: also the RO is a noun predicate which lice…

Gestión del cuerpo y planificación urbana: Desplazamiento de significado en la reivención de cuepos y ciudades
2020
Contemporary cities have administrations increasingly marked by urban planning guidelines that are guided by business and marketing and, to attract investments and tourists, implement strategies that aim to homogenize, spectacularize and control urban space. However, other experiences in the city potentially build new meaning to it, which would escape those strategically planned, creating alternative possibilities of uses, diverging from the way thar are predicted and proposed by the governmental power in their urban marketing strategies. The article discusses how the occupation of urban spaces by transvestites for prostitution may imply reflections on the role of norms of gender in the (re…
