Why do Norwegian nurses leave the public health service to practice CAM?

2009

Accepted version of an article published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice, 15 (2009), 147-151 This paper explores a number of issues associated with the recent increase in nurses choosing to leave the Norwegian health care system in order to become independent practitioners of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). The paper suggests that in Norway, nurses perceive medical hegemony continues to persist. Nurses perceive restrictions in their ability to develop their professional roles and status. CAM would appear to offer many nurses, the opportunity to develop their clinical skills in an autonomous, egalitarian and more holistic environment.

L'estrazione automatica dei ruoli semantici corradicali. The importance of being Cognate

2022

This study will introduce a tool – termed NLPYTALY – for the automatictreatment of naturally-occurring texts in Italian. The tool distinguishesconstructs with an ordinary verb from those with a support verb. Mean-ing is rendered by using cognate (i.e. etymologically related) semantic roles (CSR), which differ from other roles because they are expressed withthe content morpheme of the predicate licensing arguments. CSRs offer anumber of advantages: they can be semi-automatically derived and use the who-does-what model. Besides, they facilitate the detection of anaphoric chains and produce a foreground/background opposition of the namedentities. Finally, they permit the construction of a chro…

The role of network connectivity on epileptiform activity.

2021

AbstractA number of potentially important mechanisms have been identified as key players to generate epileptiform activity, such as genetic mutations, activity-dependent alteration of synaptic functions, and functional network reorganization at the macroscopic level. Here we study how network connectivity at cellular level can affect the onset of epileptiform activity, using computational model networks with different wiring properties. The model suggests that networks connected as in real brain circuits are more resistant to generate seizure-like activity. The results suggest new experimentally testable predictions on the cellular network connectivity in epileptic individuals, and highligh…

The Cross-Level Moderation Effect of Resource-Providing Leadership on the Demands—Work Ability Relationship

2021

Employees in female-dominated sectors are exposed to high workloads, emotional job demands, and role ambiguity, and often have insufficient resources to deal with these demands. This imbalance causes strain, threatening employees’ work ability. The aim of this study was to examine whether resource-providing leadership at the workplace level buffers against the negative repercussions of these job demands on work ability. Employees (N = 2383) from 290 work groups across three countries (Germany, Finland, and Sweden) in female-dominated sectors were asked to complete questionnaires in this study. Employees rated their immediate supervisor’s resource-providing leadership and also self-reported …

Co-Parenting: A Model of Value Creation in the Multinational Network

2017

We analyze a novel way to configure and manage multinational networks and propose a model of "co-parenting", characterized by the sharing of parenting roles and distribution of responsibilities between two units. We develop our argument around the notion of the springboard subsidiary, which has an extra-regional geographic mandate of a more strategic nature. Such extra-regional headquarters help parent firms overcome the liability of inter-regional foreignness. Based upon qualitative data, our model revolves around three stages: establishment, consolidation and maturity, each of which reflects distinct roles and knowledge flows among the three actors involved: HQ, springboard subsidiary and…

Gender role portrayals and sexism in Spanish magazines

2007

PurposeThe purpose of the paper is to analyse the male and female stereotypes in Spanish magazine advertising during the last three decades of the twentieth century in order to determine if they reflect or not the important cultural changes of Spanish society in these years.Design/methodology/approachContent analysis of 1,033 different advertisements randomly selected. To ensure reliability two independent codifiers of opposite gender worked together, one as an analyst and other as a judge. Three agreement indices were calculated.FindingsUse of male and female portrayals has undergone relevant changes in the last 30 years in accordance with the social evolution of Spain. For both men and wo…

The implications of the local context in global virtual education

2012

This paper investigates how features in students’ everyday life influence their participation in online global collaboration, and it suggests that students’ local context should be recognised as a significant part of their educational space. In this exploratory case study of students engaged in a global online master’s programme, the discussion is organised under three main headings: the social, material, and cultural dimensions of students’ daily life. The paper shows how the influence of the students’ local contex…

Coping and parental role competence of mothers of preterm infant

2014

The study was aimed at obtaining knowledge about mothers' experiences of preterm birth. The objective of the study is to explore coping strategies and self- perceived parental competence, in mothers of infant born moderately and severely preterm and admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). METHODS: The study involved a group of 16 mothers of moderately preterm children (weeks' gestational age: mean=34, SD=2 and birth weight: mean=2000 g, SD=200 g) and a group of 14 mothers of severely preterm children (weeks' gestational age: mean=29, SD=2 and birth weight: mean=1700 g, SD=350 g). The following instruments were used with mothers to investigate focus areas of research: Coping Ori…

Nurse‐led counseling for coronary artery disease patients: A 1‐year follow‐up study

2021

Nurse-led counseling and systematic follow-up has been shown to reduce cardiovascular risk factor levels. The study aim was to investigate if cardiovascular risk factor levels could be reduced in patients with coronary artery disease with a nurse-led intervention and to report patients’ evaluations of nurse-led counseling. The study design was a real-life longitudinal follow-up counseling intervention. Data were collected from November 2017 to May 2020. The nurse-led intervention and patients’ follow-up time was one year. Of the 78 patients recruited, 74 completed the study. The most significant findings were in the levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and trigly…
