The paper examines the tradeoffs that can exist in rural settings between the supply of classes and that of pupils transportations. A conclusion is that in the current circumstances, it could preferable to extend the number of villages in which the school is organised (via multigrade teaching) while reducing the number of pupils using busses. Since the operation cost of schools are born mostly by the State while the financing of bussing is born by the local communities, the paper opens a discussion on the balance of the financing between the two bodies.

A comparison of two different formulations for Arc Routing Problems on Mixed graphs

[EN] Arc routing problems on mixed graphs have been modelled in the literature either using just one variable per edge or associating to each edge two variables, each one representing its traversal in the corresponding direction. In this paper, and using the mixed general routing problem as an example, we compare theoretical and computationally both formulations as well as the lower bounds obtained from them using Linear Programming based methods. Extensive computational experiments, including some big and newly generated random instances, are presented.

New Heuristic Algorithms for the Windy Rural Postman Problem

[EN] In this paper we deal with the windy rural postman problem. This problem generalizes several important arc routing problems and has interesting real-life applications. Here, we present several heuristics whose study has lead to the design of a scatter search algorithm for the windy rural postman problem. A branch-and-cut algorithm for the Profitable Windy Rural Postman Problem

[EN] In this paper we study the profitable windy rural postman problem. This is an arc routing problem with profits defined on a windy graph in which there is a profit associated with some of the edges of the graph, consisting of finding a route maximizing the difference between the total profit collected and the total cost. This problem generalizes the rural postman problem and other well-known arc routing problems and has real-life applications, mainly in snow removal operations. La excavación arqueológica en 2008 del yacimiento de la Fonteta Ràquia (Riba-Roja del Túria, València) permitió documentar un pequeño asentamiento rural de la Edetania, territorio de la antigua ciudad ibérica de Edeta / Tossal de Sant Miquel (Llíria, València). El núcleo estuvo ocupado entre finales del s. V a.C. y finales del III / comienzos del II a.C. Las obras de la A-66 (Autovía de Extremadura) descubrieron un gran número de yacimientos arqueológicos que fueron excavados y documentados en su totalidad. La Villa Romana de Clavellinas es uno de estos ejemplos. Excavada entre junio del 2001 y enero de 2002, aportó gran número de estructuras y de restos materiales, suficientes para considerarla como un centro productivo rural romano. A su vez, también se documentaron un gran número de monedas con una cronología del siglo I d.C. al IV d.C. This book, resulting from a national investigation conducted by Inrap, is an analytical presentation of the rhythms of the emergence and abandonment of rural settlements during the Second Iron Age in the northern half of France. Depending on the region studied, between the 5th century BC and the 1st century AD, rural settlements were established, and have now been studied through preventative archaeological operations covering large surfaces.
