A new paradigm for pattern classification: Nearest Border Techniques
2013
Published version of a chapter in the book: AI 2013: Advances in Artificial Intelligence. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-03680-9_44 There are many paradigms for pattern classification. As opposed to these, this paper introduces a paradigm that has not been reported in the literature earlier, which we shall refer to as the Nearest Border (NB) paradigm. The philosophy for developing such a NB strategy is as follows: Given the training data set for each class, we shall first attempt to create borders for each individual class. After that, we advocate that testing is accomplished by assigning the test sample to the class whose border it lies closest to…
Development and validation of a micellar liquid chromatographic method to determine three antitumorals in plasma
2017
Aim: A micellar liquid chromatographic method to determine several anticancer drugs (pazopanib, dabrafenib and regorafenib) in plasma was developed and validated by the guidelines of the EMA. Experimental: Plasma samples were directly injected, after a 1/5-dilution in a micellar solution. The drugs were resolved in <18 min using a C18 column. The mobile phase was an aqueous solution of 0.12 M SDS – 2% 1-pentanol, buffered at pH 7. The detection was performed by absorbance at 260 nm. Results: The values of the main validation parameters were: LOD (0.1–1 mg/l), calibration range (0.2–2 to 80 mg/l), accuracy (-12.5 to +11.7%) and precision (<11.9%). Conclusion: The procedure was conduct…
THE RECOVERY-ELISA—A NOVEL ASSAY TECHNIQUE TO MONITOR THERAPY WITH HUMANIZED ANTIBODIES: THE EXAMPLE OF OMALIZUMAB
2013
The therapeutic use of antibodies has grown exponentially, providing new treatment options for various diseases. Monitoring treatment with therapeutic antibodies is a particular challenge because often the target antigen is no longer measurable or the results are unreliable. To overcome this problem, a recovery-ELISA was developed to quantify therapeutic antibody and antigen by a modification of the traditional sandwich immunoassay using omalizumab as an example. Standard serum samples were spiked with IgE and omalizumab in a certain concentration range to create standard curves. After incubation and washout procedures, the reaction was stopped and the plate read with bichromatic absorbance…
DAQs-based wattmeters for high accuracy measurements. Comparison with the Italian power primary standard
2013
Abstract This paper is focused on the use of data acquisition boards (DAQs) for the development of high accuracy PC-based instruments for the measurements of electrical power. The proposed systems are simple, portable and low cost because they are based on commercial data acquisition boards (DAQs) connected to a common personal computer. Data processing is carried out by a commercial software based on an interpolating windowed FFT. In the paper it is shown how the voltage can be sensed directly, thanks to the DAQ input range, thus avoiding expensive voltage dividers. The set up of the DAQs-based solutions is described and the evaluation of their metrological features is made by means of a c…
The Transcultural Community Resilience Scale: Psychometric Properties and Multinational Validity in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic
2021
Few instruments assess community resilience. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the capacity of communities to support resilience of members deserves to be assessed to develop programs for improving mental health of affected populations. This article presents the development of the Transcultural-Community Resilience Scale (T-CRS), its underlying factorial structure and transcultural validity with a multilingual (English, French, Creole, Kinyarwanda), multinational (DR Congo, Haiti, Rwanda, Togo) and multicultural sample affected by this pandemic. A sample of 1,267 participants (40.9% women) were recruited in the four countries: DRC (n = 626, 43.4% women), Haiti (n = 225, 42.0% women), R…
The use of complementary alternative medicines in advanced cancer patients followed at home
2021
Objectives: To assess the use of complementary alternative medicines (CAM) in advanced cancer patients followed at home. Methods: A consecutive sample of advanced cancer patients admitted to a home palliative care program was invited to participate in the study in a period of two months. Demographic characteristics, religious belief, education level, diagnosis, and socio-economic condition were recorded. Patients were asked about the use of CAM, considered to be a health-related treatment practiced outside the established health services. Information about CAM indications and those who prescribed or suggested CAM were also collected. Results: Two hundred and eighty-three advanced cancer pat…
Asynchronous sensor fusion of GPS, IMU and CAN-based odometry for heavy-duty vehicles
2021
[EN] In heavy-duty vehicles, multiple signals are available to estimate the vehicle's kinematics, such as Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), Global Positioning System (GPS) and linear and angular speed readings from wheel tachometers on the internal Controller Area Network (CAN). These signals have different noise variance, bandwidth and sampling rate (being the latter, possibly, irregular). In this paper we present a non-linear sensor fusion algorithm allowing asynchronous sampling and non-causal smoothing. It is applied to achieve accuracy improvements when incorporating odometry measurements from CAN bus to standard GPS+IMU kinematic estimation, as well as the robustness against missing da…
Clinically-Driven Virtual Patient Cohorts Generation: An Application to Aorta
2021
The combination of machine learning methods together with computational modeling and simulation of the cardiovascular system brings the possibility of obtaining very valuable information about new therapies or clinical devices through in-silico experiments. However, the application of machine learning methods demands access to large cohorts of patients. As an alternative to medical data acquisition and processing, which often requires some degree of manual intervention, the generation of virtual cohorts made of synthetic patients can be automated. However, the generation of a synthetic sample can still be computationally demanding to guarantee that it is clinically meaningful and that it re…
A Software Package for a Serum Bank Management
1979
A serum-bank is a collection of human serum samples coming from different locations (in our case Children Hospital, schools, factories, town departemens), allocated in some archives. Principal users of a such data-bank are, of course, physicians and biologists that are mainly interested in statistical analysis (computation of averages, variances factor analysis, etc.) of immunological and epidemiological relevance, in order to investigate about some haematochemical parameters common to some selected subset of the archives [1], [2].
