Influence of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Psychomotor Symptoms in Major Depression
2020
Background: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) might be a promising treatment strategy for depression. As disturbances in psychomotor activity are one of the key features of unipolar depression are, we aimed to evaluate the behavioral effects of ten tDCS sessions over a 5-day period on psychomotor retardation in depressed patients. Methods: Twenty-three treatment-resistant depressed patients received either active or sham anodal tDCS to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (2 mA, 10 sessions over 1 week). Psychomotor functioning was registered by means of observer ratings (Salpê
A pilot study on non-invasive treatment of migraine: The self-myofascial release
2021
The aims of this paper was to determine the effect of self-myofascial release (SMFR) on postural stability and to analyze if it can influence migraine condition. Twenty-five subjects (age 49.7±12.5) affected by migraine were enrolled. Assessments included a stabilometric analysis in order to evaluate balance and plantar support, with eyes open (OE) and closed (CE); cervical ROM measurement; evaluation of upper limb strength through handgrip. All the analysis were carried out before and after the administration of a single SMFR protocol, using medium density small balls laid in the three most painful trigger points in migraine patients: trapezius, sternocleidomastoids and suboccipital muscle…
Instability of misoprostol tablets stored outside the blister: a potential serious concern for clinical outcome in medical abortion.
2014
IntroductionMisoprostol (Cytotec) is recognised to be effective for many gynaecological indications including termination of pregnancy, management of miscarriage and postpartum haemorrhage. Although not licensed for such indications, it has been used for these purposes by millions of women throughout the world. Misoprostol tablets are most often packaged as multiple tablets within an aluminium strip, each within an individual alveolus. When an alveolus is opened, tablets will be exposed to atmospheric conditions.ObjectiveTo compare the pharmaco technical characteristics (weight, friability), water content, misoprostol content and decomposition product content (type A misoprostol, type B mis…
Orthogonal switching of AMS axes during type-2 fold interference : Insights from integrated X-ray computed tomography, AMS and 3D petrography
2017
We applied X-ray computed microtomography (μ-CT) in combination with anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) analysis to study metamorphic rock fabrics in an oriented drill core sample of pyrite-pyrrhotite-quartz-mica schist. The sample is extracted from the Paleoproterozoic Martimo metasedimentary belt of northern Finland. The μ-CT resolves the spatial distribution, shape and orientation of 25,920 pyrrhotite and 153 pyrite grains localized in mm-thick metapelitic laminae. Together with microstructural analysis, the μ-CT allows us to interpret the prolate symmetry of the AMS ellipsoid and its relationship to the deformation history. AMS of the sample is controlled by pyrrhotite porphyro…
Differentiation among dairy products by combination of fast field cycling NMR relaxometry data and chemometrics
2021
A set of commercial milk and Sicilian cheeses was analysed by a combination of fast field cycling (FFC) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry and chemometrics. The NMR dispersion (NMRD) curves were successfully analysed with a mathematical model applied on Parmigiano-Reggiano (PR) cheese. Regression parameters were led back to the molecular components of cheeses (water trapped in casein micelles, proteins and fats) and milk samples (water belonging to hydration shells around dispersed colloidal particles of different sizes and bulk water). The application of chemometric analysis on relaxometric data enabled differentiating milk from cheeses and revealing differences within the two sa…
A new approach to calibrate the thermal conditions in space charge measurements on HVDC mini-cables
2019
The PEA method is currently widespread used for space charge measurements in mini-cables in order to qualify the behavior of semicon-dielectric-semicon compound under electric and thermal stress. The main goal of this research is to quantitatively evaluate the relationship between the thermal boundary conditions applied to cables or mini-cables and the maximum local electric field due to the accumulated space charge. Hitherto, several research groups have obtained thermal gradients over the dielectric's radius heating the conductor by Joule effect due to an induced current. In this paper, a numerical approach is offered to calibrate the heat exchange boundary conditions to apply to a sample…
Soil quality - Method to directly extract DNA from Soil Samples. ISO/ DIS 11063
2010
DNA (deoxy ribonucleic acids) is an essential component of any living organisms coding for enzymes responsible for any biological activities. The study of DNA sequences from DNA sources extracted from different matrixes, by means of numerous molecular approaches, provides molecular markers that can be used to sharply distinguish and identify different organisms (bacteria, archaea and eucaryotes). Up to now, most of the studies aiming to develop microbial soil quality indicators applicable to complex environment, such as soil, were biased by the unculturability of many microorganisms and the lack of sensitivity of traditional microbiological methods. The recent development of numerous molecu…
Protective ventilation with high versus low positive end-expiratory pressure during one-lung ventilation for thoracic surgery (PROTHOR): study protoc…
2019
Background: Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPC) may result in longer duration of in-hospital stay and even mortality. Both thoracic surgery and intraoperative mechanical ventilation settings add considerably to the risk of PPC. It is unclear if one-lung ventilation (OLV) for thoracic surgery with a strategy of intraoperative high positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) and recruitment maneuvers (RM) reduces PPC, compared to low PEEP without RM. Methods: PROTHOR is an international, multicenter, randomized, controlled, assessor-blinded, two-arm trial initiated by investigators of the PROtective VEntilation NETwork. In total, 2378 patients will be randomly assigned to one of two diffe…
On overall sampling plan for small area estimation
2017
The time and budget restrictions in survey sampling can impose limits on the area sample sizes. This may reduce the possibility to obtain area-specific and population parameters estimates with adequate precision. Market research companies and institutes for producing official statistics face frequently this problem. Various models and methods for small area estimation (SAE) have been developed to solve this problem. The sample allocation must support the selected model and method to ensure efficient estimation and must be implemented in the design phase of the survey. The proposed allocation is developed by incorporating auxiliary information, a model, and an estimation method. The estimate…
Two‐sample problems in statistical data modelling
2010
A common problem in mathematical statistics is to check whether two samples differ from each other. From modelling point of view it is possible to make a statistical test for the equality of two means or alternatively two distribution functions. The second approach allows to represent the two‐sample test graphically. This can be done by adding simultaneous confidence bands to the probability‐probability (P — P) or quantile‐quantile (Q — Q) plots. In this paper we compare empirically the accuracy of the classical two‐sample t‐test, empirical likelihood method and several bootstrap methods. For a real data example both Q — Q and P — P plots with simultaneous confidence bands have been plotted…
