New insights into the composition of historical remedies and pharmaceutical formulations: the identification of natural resins and balsams by gas chr…
2020
AbstractThe present paper reports one of the first studies on the identification of natural resins and balsams in modern era drug formulations. Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was applied to investigate the composition of ancient remedies and pharmaceutical formulations coming from the Spezieria di Santa Maria della Scala in Rome, founded at the end of the seventeenth century by the Discalced Carmelites. The obtained results highlight the presence of complex mixtures containing resinaceous and lipidic-based compounds. Thanks to the detection of characteristic markers, it was possible to identify several natural resins, such as guaiacum resin, ladano resin and scamm…
Nuovi dati sulla presenza di Eryx jaculus (Linnaeus, 1758) in Sicilia
2017
The javelin sand boa {Eryx jaculus) is a snake belonging to the Erycidae family, distributed in North Africa, southern Balkans and the Middle East. Recently its presence was confirmed in Italy, in a small area along the coast of south-central Sicily, in the territories of Licata (province of Agrigento). This paper reports the current distribution area, of about 52 km2, obtained by the Minimum Convex Polygon method, using recent bibliographical ob-servations and three new observations carried out between 15 August 2014 and 30 Aprii 2016. The new findings are located east of the known Sicilian distribution area and indicate for the first time the presence of the javelin sand boa in the provin…
On the K-stability of complete intersections in polarized manifolds
2011
We consider the problem of existence of constant scalar curvature Kaehler metrics on complete intersections of sections of vector bundles. In particular we give general formulas relating the Futaki invariant of such a manifold to the weight of sections defining it and to the Futaki invariant of the ambient manifold. As applications we give a new Mukai-Umemura-Tian like example of Fano 5-fold admitting no Kaehler-Einstein metric and a strong evidence of K-stability of complete intersections on Grassmannians.
Multi-scenario multi-objective robust optimization under deep uncertainty: A posteriori approach
2021
This paper proposes a novel optimization approach for multi-scenario multi-objective robust decision making, as well as an alternative way for scenario discovery and identifying vulnerable scenarios even before any solution generation. To demonstrate and test the novel approach, we use the classic shallow lake problem. We compare the results obtained with the novel approach to those obtained with previously used approaches. We show that the novel approach guarantees the feasibility and robust efficiency of the produced solutions under all selected scenarios, while decreasing computation cost, addresses the scenario-dependency issues, and enables the decision-makers to explore the trade-off …
Representation of capacity drop at a road merge via point constraints in a first order traffic model
2018
We reproduce the capacity drop phenomenon at a road merge by implementing a non-local point constraint at the junction in a first order traffic model. We call capacity drop the situation in which the outflow through the junction is lower than the receiving capacity of the outgoing road, as too many vehicles trying to access the junction from the incoming roads hinder each other. In this paper, we first construct an enhanced version of the locally constrained model introduced by Haut et al. (Proceedings 16th IFAC World Congress. Prague, Czech Republic 229 (2005) TuM01TP/3), then we propose its counterpart featuring a non-local constraint and finally we compare numerically the two models by c…
The Riemannian manifold of all Riemannian metrics
1991
In this paper we study the geometry of (M, G) by using the ideas developed in [Michor, 1980]. With that differentiable structure on M it is possible to use variational principles and so we start in section 2 by computing geodesics as the curves in M minimizing the energy functional. From the geodesic equation, the covariant derivative of the Levi-Civita connection can be obtained, and that provides a direct method for computing the curvature of the manifold. Christoffel symbol and curvature turn out to be pointwise in M and so, although the mappings involved in the definition of the Ricci tensor and the scalar curvature have no trace, in our case we can define the concepts of ”Ricci like cu…
Existence, regularity, and boundary behaviour of generalized surfaces of prescribed mean curvature

Flchen Beschrnkter Mittlerer Krmmung in Einer Dreidimensionalen Riemannschen Mannigfaltigkeit
1973
In recent papers HILDEBRANDT [11] and HARTH [5] proved the existence of solutions of the problem of Plateau for surfaces of bounded mean curvature with fixed and free boundaries in E3 and for minimal surfaces with free boundaries in a Riemannian manifold, respectively. Here their methods will be combined to solve the problem of Plateau for surfaces of bounded mean curvature in a Riemannian manifold. This will be done for fixed and free boundaries. Moreover, isoperimetric inequalities for the solutions will be given.
Electric scalar potential estimations for non-invasive brain activity detection through multinode Shepard method
2022
Electric scalar potential estimation is a key step for non-invasive investigations of brain activity with high time resolutions. The neural sources can be reconstructed by solving a typical inverse problem based on a forward problem formulated as a set of boundary value problems coupled by interface conditions. In this paper, we propose a Shepard multinode method to numerically estimate electric scalar potentials via collocation. The method is based on a special kind of inverse distance weighting partition of unity method to increase polynomial precision, approximation order, and accuracy of the classical Shepard approximation. The barycentric form, through the use of cardinal basis functio…
