Restoration of a polymateric sculpture of the immaculate conception

This study focuses on the intervention methodologies applied on a polymateric polychrome sculpture of the Immaculate Conception (18th century), located inside the chapel of the Oratorio dei Falegnami in Palermo. The peculiarity of this artefact is the employment of two different supports, upon which both the ground and paint layers are laid: a wooden one, carved and prepared, for the execution of the anatomical parts, and a textile one, sewn, pinned on and stiffened with glue, for the garments. Il saggio esamina la statua lignea rivestita in lamine d’argento della Madonna del Carmelo e alcune suppellettili liturgiche custodite nella chiesa del Carmine Maggiore di Palermo. Si tratta di opere realizzate da artisti siciliani tra il Settecento e l’Ottocento. Collocato nell’antico mercato storico di Ballarò, la chiesa, con annesso convento dei PP. Carmelitani, custodisce opere che testimoniano la raffinata committenza dell’Ordine. The paper focuses on the analysis of ‘innovative’ technologies for low-cost survey: downstream test metrology and precise coding methodology, which could be of great support in the documen- tation, virtualization and dissemination of the sculptural heritage. The transposition of the museum works in 3D allows the return of models that can be used by remote –for studies, measurements, restorations, etc.–, no needing a physical contact with the piece, so in a non-invasive way. The virtual museum also offers the pos- sibility to organize exhibitions accessible to a wider audience.

Abstract. The following contribution focuses on the low-cost Shining 3D EinScan-Pro scanner, above all the analysis of its precision and accuracy. Trecento gotico doloroso e cortese in Sicilia: le opere in mostra

Il saggio descrive molte delle opere d'arte del XIV e XV secolo esposte in mostra (dipinti su tavola, sculture lignee, oggetti in argento con smalti, cofanetti in avorio e legno), di fattura locale, italiana, cipriota-egea, iberica, francese e tedesca, tutte provenienti dalla Sicilia, alcune legate alla famiglia Chiaromonte. The essay describes many of the 14th and 15th century works of art on display (paintings on wood, wooden sculptures, silver objects with enamels, ivory and wooden boxes), of local, Italian, Cypriot-egean, Iberian, French and German manufacture, all from Sicily, some related to the Chiaromonte family.

In this paper we describe scientific investigations on the artwork ‘Crucified and deposed Christ’ from the Diocesan Museum of Palermo. After the patrimonial destruction that took place during the Civil War of 1936-1939 in the city of Cartagena, religious art and especially sacred sculpture, is greatly affected. The artistic expressions that the Passionist entities took to the streets on the days of Holy Week, disappear almost in their entirety, having to start a tremendously costly reconstruction process in order to alleviate the losses suffered. Un frammento marmoreo raffigurante un serpente viene descritto e commentato per stabilirne il possibile significato nello specifico contesto dei bagni medievali, ma anche tenendo conto della varietà di rimandi che l'iimmagine del serpente ha assunto in età classica. A marble fragment of a snake is described and briefly discussed in order to establish its significance in the specific context of the medieval baths but also considering the polysemy of the iconography in the classical period.
Statue lignee nel Settecento nelle chiese di Ficarazzi: aggiunte alla produzione di Filippo Quattrocchi e della sua bottega

Il contributo esamina quattro statue lignee, due delle quali inedite, custodite nelle chiese di Ficarazzi, piccolo centro delle province di Palermo. Si tratta di sculture realizzate tra la fine del Settecento e i primi decenni del secolo successivo, che vengono ricondotte per la prima volta al noto Filippo Quattrocchi e alla sua bottega, in particolare al figlio Francesco.
