Word search sequences in teacher-student interaction in an English as medium of instruction context
2019
This study explores the ways students in a higher education setting engage in word searches. The investigation draws on 30-hour video recordings of content classes in an English as a medium of instruction university in Turkey. Using conversation analysis, the study focuses on the interactionally accomplished functions of vocal and visual practices deployed by the students in the course of a word search. We revealed that word searches are constructed through publicly visible resources (i.e. gaze, body orientation, gestures) and explicit formulaic expressions (i.e. how can I say it?), and accomplished via bilingual resources. It was also observed that the teacher does not orient to word searc…
Skill-Based Scouting of Open Management Content
2010
Already existing open educational resources in management have a high potential for enterprises to address the increasing training needs of their employees. However, access barriers still prevent the full exploitation of this potential. Users have to search a number of repositories with heterogeneous interfaces in order to retrieve the desired content. In addition, the use of search criteria related to skills, such as learning objectives and skill-levels is in most cases not supported. The demonstrator presented in this paper addresses these shortcomings by federating multiple repositories, integrating and enriching their metadata, and employing skill-based search for management related con…
Measuring the Spatial Dispersion of Evolutionary Search Processes: Application to Walksat
2002
In this paper, we propose a simple and efficient method for measuring the spatial dispersion of a set of points in a metric space. This method allows the quantifying of the population diversity in genetic algorithms. It can also be used to measure the spatial dispersion of any local search process during a specified time interval. We then use this method to study the way Walksat explores its search space, showing that the search for a solution often includes several stages of intensification and diversification.
Bloodstream Infections in Hospitalized Patients with COVID-19: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
2021
Background: Little is known about the occurrence of bloodstream infections in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and the related clinical consequences. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to estimate the pooled occurrence of BSIs among hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and mortality of this patient population. Methods: A systematic search was performed on PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science from inception to 19 April 2021. The primary outcome was the occurrence of BSIs among hospitalized patients with COVID-19. The secondary outcome was mortality at the longest available follow-up. Results: Forty-six studies met the inclusion criteria, with a total of 42,694 patients e…
L'assistenza umanitaria delle ONG sotto inchiesta
2022
Placing links in mobile banking application
2005
This study compares two alternative ways to organize links as navigation elements in mobile banking applications. For the comparison, two alternative banking applications were tested. The applications that were tested had the same content but different ways to navigate with links. One of them provided a system where the user was required to use specific menu pages for navigation and where there were no cross-navigation enabling links on content pages. The other application had cross-navigation enabling links on content pages. The comparison was done by conducting a usability test with 30 test users. The users' performance and subjective feedback were measured in the test. The application wi…
Modelling Mobile Encounter Networks
2006
This article presents mobile encounter networks, which emerge when mobile devices come across each other and form a temporary connection between them using a common short-range radio technology. Local information exchanges between mobile devices results in a broadcast diffusion of information to other users of the network with a delay. In addition to presenting the concept of mobile encounter networks, we also provide an abstract method for describing the information diffusion process inside them. peerReviewed
Improving the performance of CAR systems based on mobile phones
2013
Collaborative Augmented Reality (CAR) systems allow multiple users to share a real work environment including computer-generated images in real time. Currently, the hardware features of most mobile phones makes them a natural platform for CAR systems. However, the wide variety of these hardware features can have important effects on the performance of the mobile CAR applications. This thesis proposes a performance characterization and improvement of CAR systems based on mobile phones. The research results, at the time of writing this paper, shows that a CAR system using mobile phones as clients and with a single server can support up to one thousand clients while providing interactive respo…
Mobile Search - Social Network Search Using Mobile Devices Demonstration
2008
Mobile search prototype demonstrates the possibilities of social network search in N800 mobile devices. Search is initiated from a N800 mobile device to search the contacts in mobile device's addressbook. The contacts can be other N800 mobile devices running mobile Web server or normal Web servers in the Internet with Drupal content management system. Mobile device users can select which of their personal information such as phone numbers, calendar data etc. to share via a mobile Web server. The proposed search mechanism has many benefits compared to centralized Web search engines like Google. The search can locate information which is not referenced anywhere and thus allows hidden or rare …
Mobile Encounter Networks and Their Applications
2008
This article presents mobile encounter networks (MENs), which emerge when mobile devices come across each other and form a temporary connection between them using a common short-range radio technology. Local information exchanges between mobile devices results in a broadcast diffusion of information to other users of the network with a delay. Gasoline price comparison system (GPCS), which delivers newest gasoline prices to mobile users using mobile encounter information diffusion, is described as well as other application areas where MENs could be used. The feasibility of building MENs using bluetooth is tested with the BlueCheese mobile encounter network middleware and it is found that the…
