Weakly magnetic, millisecond spinning neutron stars attain their very fast rotation through a 1E8-1E9 yr long phase during which they undergo disk-accretion of matter from a low mass companion star. They can be detected as accretion-powered millisecond X-ray pulsars if towards the end of this phase their magnetic field is still strong enough to channel the accreting matter towards the magnetic poles. Genetic Algorithms Applied to the Design of 3D Photonic Crystals

We aim at determining the optimal configuration of photonic crystal structures capable of carrying out a certain optical task. An exhaustive search would require a high computational cost, in this work we show how genetic algorithms can be applied to reliably find an optimal topology of threedimensional photonic crystals. The fitness, representing the performance of each potential configuration, is calculated by means of finite element analysis. Different experiments are presented in order to illustrate the potential of this 3D design approach.

It is shown that unconscious associative processes taking place in the memory of a searcher during the formulation of a search query in information retrieval — such as the production of free word associations and the generation of synonyms — can be simulated using statistical models that analyze the distribution of words in large text corpora. The free word associations as produced by subjects on presentation of stimulus words can be predicted by applying first-order statistics to the frequencies of word co-occurrences as observed in texts. Fragtique: Applying an OO Database Distribution Strategy to Data Warehouse

We propose a strategy for distribution of a relational data warehouse organized according to a star schema. We adapt fragmentation and allocation strategies that were developed for OO databases. We split the most-often-accessed dimension table into fragments by using primary horizontal fragmentation. The derived fragmentation then divides the fact table into fragments. Other dimension tables are not fragmented since they are presumed to be sufficiently small. Allocation of fragments encompasses duplication of non-fragmented dimension tables that we call a closure.
