Equity-worthiness and equity-willingness: key factors in private equity deals

2014

While access to private equity funds (PEFs) provides a unique opportunity for firms to set up sturdy growth paths, how PEFs select companies is an unknown process to entrepreneurs and business owners. This study aims to offer insights regarding the private equity market to entrepreneurs searching for external capital. We analyzed a novel dataset of 240 pre-deal negotiations between small- and medium-sized Italian companies and a closed-end fund. Results indicate that the successful closing of a deal depends on more than just the target firm's equity-worthiness (i.e., the company's ability to meet the expectations of a private equity investor). In fact, there is another dimension: the target…

Gradient estimates for the perfect conductivity problem in anisotropic media

2018

Abstract We study the perfect conductivity problem when two perfectly conducting inclusions are closely located to each other in an anisotropic background medium. We establish optimal upper and lower gradient bounds for the solution in any dimension which characterize the singular behavior of the electric field as the distance between the inclusions goes to zero.

A managerial approach to firms’ networking strategy

2009

As recently pointed out by many authors and companies‟ manager, the company competitiveness is more and more based on the ability of a firm to build strategic and competitive networks with partners and competitors. Nowadays, in a competitive environment, firms are facing challenges such as the growing demand of innovation, the increasing competitiveness and the need to penetrate new markets, by using network strategies. Consequently, such motivations are putting an increasing interest on networking strategy issue, which are becoming an essential strength of company competitive strategy. In this work the most significant theories on firm networking are reviewed and an innovative strategic pe…

Histological Change in Cucumber Tissue and Cellulase Activity of Plectosphaerella melonis Strain 502

2022

In the last ten years, many countries around the world recorded a new disease of the Cucurbitaceae, the agent of which was P. melonis. The ability of P. melonis 502 to form intracellular mycelium in the epidermal and parenchymal tissues of roots was shown. Leading tissues (xylem and phloem) did not colonize, which indicates the impossibility of plant vessel clogging and shows the fungus’s biochemical effects on plants, which causes the process of pathogenesis. P. melonis 502 is able to develop in a wide range of pH values, while the pH-optimum is 8.5. P. melonis 502 is able to adjust the pH of the medium to the optimal value—8.5. We also showed that cellulase enzyme synthesis de…

Momentum transport and bed shear stress distribution in a meandering bend: Experimental analysis in a laboratory flume

2015

The paper concerns the mechanisms underlying the distribution of the bed shear stress in meandering bends. Literature indicates that cross-stream circulation strongly affects the redistribution of the downstream velocity, but the feedback between them is still poorly understood. The aim of this paper is to gain some insight into how the momentum transport by cross-stream circulation contributes to the bed shear stress redistribution. Experimental analysis, based on a detailed dataset collected in a large-amplitude meandering laboratory flume, is presented. From these data an evaluation is made of the terms in the depth-averaged momentum equations and the analysis is especially devoted to te…

Velocity Distribution and Dip Phenomenon in a Large Amplitude Meandering Channel

2020

The prediction of the velocity-dip, whereby the location of the maximum velocity occurs below the water surface, could be important for defining the flow pattern and the momentum transport processes. This study explores the dip-phenomenon in a high-curvature meandering bend. With the aid of data collected in a laboratory flume, the influence of the distance to the outer bank, the channel's curvature and the aspect ratio on the formation and position of the velocity-dip is investigated. Results show that, for the aspect ratios examined, a dip forms in the velocity profiles and its position varies along the bend as a function of the channel's curvature and the aspect ratio. Based on the measu…

Il professore Franco Salvo. Un maestro dei diritti di libertà a Palermo nella seconda metà del Novecento

2018

This paper focuses on the figure of Franco Salvo, a teacher of history and philosophy at the classical high school Umberto I in Palermo from 1945 to 1981. He was a master of freedom rights who taught democratically and critically the civic education in a historical perspective. Salvo was a representative figure of the Sicilian school after the Second World War, a master of life. As his students recall, in the 1968 he supported the student movement, forming their consciences for a critical reflection, a responsible freedom, a social and political commitment.

Special education students in transition to further education: A four-year register-based follow-up study in Finland

2016

Abstract This study examines the transition of special education students into upper secondary education in Finland. The national register-based school-level dataset comprises three compulsory school-leaving cohorts of 2004, 2006 and 2009 including all students and schools providing lower secondary education. Special education students (Tier 3) are divided into four different groups based on their curriculum adjustments. The school-level effect of special education provision is evaluated with statistical models exploiting the panel nature of the data. The results show that there are significant differences in participation in upper secondary education between the groups with different level…

Antimicrobial and Insecticidal: Cyclic Lipopeptides and Hydrogen Cyanide Produced by Plant-Beneficial Pseudomonas Strains CHA0, CMR12a, and PCL1391 C…

2017

Particular groups of plant-beneficial fluorescent pseudomonads are not only root colonizers that provide plant disease suppression, but in addition are able to infect and kill insect larvae. The mechanisms by which the bacteria manage to infest this alternative host, to overcome its immune system, and to ultimately kill the insect are still largely unknown. However, the investigation of the few virulence factors discovered so far, points to a highly multifactorial nature of insecticidal activity. Antimicrobial compounds produced by fluorescent pseudomonads are effective weapons against a vast diversity of organisms such as fungi, oomycetes, nematodes, and protozoa. Here, we investigated whe…
