Using historical school book excerpts for the education of mature mathematics teachers

International audience; The use of historical and cultural perspectives in university mathematics education can support the development of self-esteem and maturity. It can bring together students with similar interests. We present the concept of a seminar on the analysis of mathematical textbooks and of learning contexts based on the consideration of historical excerpts. Such a seminar can become a starting point for a community of practice with the potential to develop social recognition and personal appreciation of the individual interests and talents of its members and their joint activities.

The value of gradients for intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) in the assessment of graft function after total parathyroidectomy/autotransplantation for renal hyperparathyroidism was evaluated in a prospective follow-up study. Altogether 99 patients who underwent operation from August 1, 1987 to December 31, 1996 were prospectively investigated and reexamined postoperatively, including analyses of serum calcium, alkaline phosphatase, and intact PTH in the antecubital venous blood of both arms. We establish uniformization results for metric spaces that are homeomorphic to the Euclidean plane or sphere and have locally finite Hausdorff 2-measure. Applying the geometric definition of quasiconformality, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for such spaces to be QC equivalent to the Euclidean plane, disk, or sphere. Moreover, we show that if such a QC parametrization exists, then the dilatation can be bounded by 2. As an application, we show that the Euclidean upper bound for measures of balls is a sufficient condition for the existence of a 2-QC parametrization. International audience; Making assumptions is a key activity in modelling. The present study aims to explore the variety of assumptions that lower secondary students make in this process. As theoretical basis for the data analysis, we used the modelling cycle by Blum and Leiss (2007) and framed a definition of assumptions. The study was carried out with grade 9 students. The results show three categories of assumptions: (1) parameter assumptions, (2) assumptions for the choice of the mathematical model, and (3) assumptions about task expectations. Electron antineutrino appearance is measured by the T2K experiment in an accelerator-produced antineutrino beam, using additional neutrino beam operation to constrain parameters of the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) mixing matrix. T2K observes 15 candidate electron antineutrino events with a background expectation of 9.3 events. Including information from the kinematic distribution of observed events, the hypothesis of no electron antineutrino appearance is disfavored with a significance of 2.40 σ and no discrepancy between data and PMNS predictions is found. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the child-related competence beliefs of mothers are associated with the development of Finnish adolescents' self-concept of mathematics and literacy ability during their transition from primary to lower secondary school and whether these associations depend on adolescents' level of performance. The aims of this three-wave longitudinal study were to identify and describe trajectories of perceived emotional support from teachers and investigate whether these trajectories were related to the development of intentions to quit upper secondary school via change in perceived mastery climate. Among 1379 Norwegian upper secondary school students, three trajectory subgroups were identified: stable high (84.9%), decreasing (7.8%), and low increasing (7.3%). The subgroups differed in levels of achievement ambition and academic self-concept.
