Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic, immune-mediated enteropathy in genetically predisposed individuals caused by the ingestion of gluten-containing cereals. CD is further characterized by variable clinical presentation, specific serum autoantibody response and a variable degree of damage in the small intestinal mucosa. HLA molecules DQ2 (90%–95%) and DQ8 (5%–10%) are associated with CD, and in the continued presence of gluten the disease is self-perpetuating. Regarding clinical presentation, CD patients may complain of not only gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, but also extraintestinal symptoms, and most importantly they may often be asymptomatic (“silent” CD). Influence of the manufacturing process on the radiation sensitivity of fluorine-doped silica-based optical fibers

International audience; In this work, we analyze the origins of the observed differences between the radiation sensitivities of fluorine-doped optical fibers made with different fabrication processes. We used several experimental techniques, coupling in situ radiation-induced absorption measurements with post mortem confocal microscopy luminescence measurements. Our data showed that the silica intrinsic defects are generated both from precursor sites and from strained regular Si-O-Si linkages. Our work also provides evidence for the preponderant role of the chlorine in determining the optical losses at about 3.5 eV. Calibration of advanced Virgo and reconstruction of the gravitational wave signal h(t) during the observing run O2

In August 2017, Advanced Virgo joined Advanced LIGO for the end of the O2 run, leading to the first gravitational waves detections with the three-detector network. This paper describes the Advanced Virgo calibration and the gravitational wave strain h(t) reconstruction during O2. The methods are the same as the ones developed for the initial Virgo detector and have already been described in previous publications, this paper summarizes the differences and emphasis is put on estimating systematic uncertainties. Background Cancer stem cells represent a population of immature tumor cells found in most solid tumors. Their peculiar features make them ideal models for studying drug resistance and sensitivity. In this study, we investigated whether cancer stem cells isolation and in vitro sensitivity assay are feasible in a clinical setting. The response of tumors to radiation is heterogeneous even in animal tumor systems where tumors all originate from the same cell culture, are implanted in genetically similar age-matched animals in a constant anatomic locationl. Radiation hardening techniques for rare-earth-based optical fibers and amplifiers

Er/Yb doped fibers and amplifiers have been shown to be very radiation sensitive, limiting their integration in space. We present an approach including successive hardening techniques to enhance their radiation tolerance. The efficiency of our approach is demonstrated by comparing the radiation responses of optical amplifiers made with same lengths of different rare-earth doped fibers and exposed to gamma-rays. Previous studies indicated that such amplifiers suffered significant degradation for doses exceeding 10 krad. Multi-party metering: An architecture for privacy-preserving profiling schemes

Several privacy concerns about the massive deploy- ment of smart meters have been arisen recently. Namely, it has been shown that the fine-grained temporal traces generated by these meters can be correlated with different users behaviors. A new architecture, called multi-party metering, for enabling privacy-preserving analysis of high-frequency metering data without requiring additional complexity at the smart meter side is here proposed. Abstract The main objective of this paper is to investigate the sensitivity analysis and optimal design of a proportional solenoid valve (PSV) operated pressure reducing valve (PRV) for heavy-duty automatic transmission clutch actuators. The nonlinear electro-hydraulic valve model is developed based on fluid dynamics. In order to implement the sensitivity analysis and optimization for the PRV, the PSV model is validated by comparing the results with data obtained from a real test-bench. Zilo gaismu bloķējošo lēcu ietekme uz kontrastjutību

Bakalaura darbs ir 21 lappaspusi garš, satur 9. attēlus, 1. tabulu un 39. literatūras atsauces. Darba mērķis ir novērtēt zilo gaismu bloķējošo lēcu ietekmi uz kontrastjutību. Mērījumi tika veikti, izmantojot Pelli-Robsona testu, kurš tika rādīts iPad telefonā. Mērījumā piedalījās 55 dalībnieki. Mērījumi tika veikti ar briļļu lēcām, kurām bija zilo gaismu bloķējošais klājums, kā arī ar lēcām, kurām bija tradicionālais pretatspīdumu klājums. Kontrastjutība bija labāka ar zilo gaismu bloķējošām lēcām nekā ar lēcām, kurām bija tradicionālais pretatspīdumu klājums (p<0.001). Dalībniekiem ar sūdzībām par žilbšanu kontrastjutības uzlabojums ar zilo gaismu bloķējošām lēcām bija lielāks nekā dalībni…
