Chick embryo retina development in vitro: the effect of insulin.
1995
In this paper we study the development of chick embryo retina cultured in vitro and the effects exerted by insulin. Retinas were removed from 7-day embryos and cultured in serum- and hormone-free medium for 7 additional days. Under these conditions retinal cells survived and underwent cholinergic differentiation, as previously ascertained by Hausman et al. (Dev. Brain Res., 1991, 59: 31-37). However, a great retardation of development was noted compared to uncultured control, 14-day retina. In fact both wet weight and DNA and protein content increased much slower than in ovo and the tubulin content decreased below even the starting value. In addition, although after 7 days in culture retina…

Climate associated variations in the human serum albumin level.
1975
Quantitative determinations of the human serum albumin level showed significantly higher values in tropical (Negroes 46.98 mg/ml, Indians 54.30 mg/ml) than in non-tropical populations (Germans 44.41 mg/ml). These observations are in agreement with those of several other authors. It is assumed that these variations in the serum albumin level are related to climate, and that they may indicate some biological advantage of higher albumin levels under the climatic conditions of tropical biotops. This hypothesis is discussed considering several aspects.
In vitro evaluation of the biocompatibility of contaminated implant surfaces treated with an Er : YAG laser and an air powder system
2004
Abstract: Titanium platelets with a sand-blasted and acid-etched surface were coated with bovine serum albumin and incubated with a suspension of Porphyromonas gingivalis (ATCC 33277). Four groups with a total of 48 specimens were formed. Laser irradiation of the specimens (n=12) was performed on a computer-controlled XY translation stage at pulse energy 60 mJ and frequency 10 pps. Twelve specimens were treated with an air powder system. After the respective treatment, human gingival fibroblasts were incubated on the specimens. The proliferation rate was determined by means of fluorescence activity of a redox indicator (Alamar Blue® Assay) which is reduced by metabolic activity related to c…
Corneal opacity and copper levels of the Lewis syndrome after systemic chemotherapy
2020
Abstract Purpose To report a female patient of biclonal Lewis syndrome which consists of a trias: biclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, paraproteinemic keratopathy in form of a brownish discoid opacification at the level of Descemet's membrane and hypercupremia. After several years there was a conversion to multiple myeloma. Systemic chemotherapy led to a complete remission of multiple myeloma and to a normalization of the copper level in the blood that lasted five years. The corneal opacification remained unchanged. Observations A currently 66-year-old woman suffered from biclonal Lewis syndrome. On both eyes there is a central discoid yellow-brownish discoloration in the Pre-D…
Pro-inflammatory cytokines and prostaglandins induce maturation of potent immunostimulatory dendritic cells under fetal calf serum-free conditions.
1998
Culture conditions for human dendritic cells (DC) have been developed by several laboratories. Most of these culture methods, however, have used conditions involving fetal calf serum (FCS) to generate DC in the presence of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor and interleukin (IL)-4. Recently, alternative culture conditions have been described using an additional stimulation with monocyte-conditioned medium (MCM) and FCS-free media to generate DC. As MCM is a rather undefined cocktail, the yield and quality of DC generated by these cultures varies substantially. We report that a defined cocktail of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, IL-1beta and IL-6 equals MCM in its potency to …
Tumour necrosis factor in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis patients in blood serum and synovial fluid
2010
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease of unknown cause which affects the ability of elderly people to work. There is strong evidence to suggest that inflammatory mediators such as tumour necrosis factor α (TNFα) and interleukin 1 (IL1) have a critical role in the pathogenesis of RA. Biological treatment blocks pathological pathways in the actions of these proinflammatory cytokines. The aim of this study was …
SERUM URIC ACID IS INCREASED IN NORMOTENSIVE OBESE CHILDREN WITH A PARENTAL HYSTORY OF HYPERTENSION
2019
Introduction: Increased uric acid levels are associated with new-onset hypertension in children. Nevertheless, controversy remains concerning a direct causative role of serum uric acid (SUA) in the pathogenesis of essential hypertension (EH). Aim: To determine if normotensive obese children and adolescent offspring of adults with EH show SUA levels different than those of paediatric subjects in whom there is no family history of EH. Methods: Fifty-nine obese normotensive children and adolescents, aged between 8 and 17 years, attending for metabolic assessment the Paediatric Diabetes Unit, Children’s Hospital ‘‘G. Di Cristina’’, and for cardiovascular evaluation the ESH Hypertension excellen…
