On Weakly Locally Uniformly Rotund Banach Spaces

1999

Abstract We show that every normed space E with a weakly locally uniformly rotund norm has an equivalent locally uniformly rotund norm. After obtaining a σ -discrete network of the unit sphere S E for the weak topology we deduce that the space E must have a countable cover by sets of small local diameter, which in turn implies the renorming conclusion. This solves a question posed by Deville, Godefroy, Haydon, and Zizler. For a weakly uniformly rotund norm we prove that the unit sphere is always metrizable for the weak topology despite the fact that it may not have the Kadec property. Moreover, Banach spaces having a countable cover by sets of small local diameter coincide with the descript…

Almost disjoint families of countable sets and separable complementation properties

2012

We study the separable complementation property (SCP) and its natural variations in Banach spaces of continuous functions over compacta $K_{\mathcal A}$ induced by almost disjoint families ${\mathcal A}$ of countable subsets of uncountable sets. For these spaces, we prove among others that $C(K_{\mathcal A})$ has the controlled variant of the separable complementation property if and only if $C(K_{\mathcal A})$ is Lindel\"of in the weak topology if and only if $K_{\mathcal A}$ is monolithic. We give an example of ${\mathcal A}$ for which $C(K_{\mathcal A})$ has the SCP, while $K_{\mathcal A}$ is not monolithic and an example of a space $C(K_{\mathcal A})$ with controlled and continuous SCP …

Completeness number of families of subsets of convergence spaces

2016

International audience; Compactoid and compact families generalize both convergent filters and compact sets. This concept turned out to be useful in various quests, like Scott topologies, triquotient maps and extensions of the Choquet active boundary theorem. The completeness number of a family in a convergence space is the least cardinality of collections of covers for which the family becomes complete. 0-completeness amounts to compactness, finite completeness to relative local compactness and countable completeness to Čech completeness. Countably conditional countable completeness amounts to pseudocompleteness of Oxtoby. Conversely, each completeness class of families can be represented a…

A new Cartan-type property and strict quasicoverings when p = 1 in metric spaces

2018

In a complete metric space that is equipped with a doubling measure and supports a Poincar\'e inequality, we prove a new Cartan-type property for the fine topology in the case $p=1$. Then we use this property to prove the existence of $1$-finely open \emph{strict subsets} and \emph{strict quasicoverings} of $1$-finely open sets. As an application, we study fine Newton-Sobolev spaces in the case $p=1$, that is, Newton-Sobolev spaces defined on $1$-finely open sets.

Set-valued mappings in partially ordered fuzzy metric spaces

2014

Abstract In this paper, we provide coincidence point and fixed point theorems satisfying an implicit relation, which extends and generalizes the result of Gregori and Sapena, for set-valued mappings in complete partially ordered fuzzy metric spaces. Also we prove a fixed point theorem for set-valued mappings on complete partially ordered fuzzy metric spaces which generalizes results of Mihet and Tirado. MSC:54E40, 54E35, 54H25.

Sharpness of Rickman’s Picard theorem in all dimensions

2015

We show that given \({n \geqslant 3}\), \({q \geqslant 1}\), and a finite set \({\{y_1, \ldots, y_q \}}\) in \({\mathbb{R}^n}\) there exists a quasiregular mapping \({\mathbb{R}^n\to \mathbb{R}^n}\) omitting exactly points \({y_1, \ldots, y_q}\).

Images and Preimages of Null Sets

2013

In this chapter we study conditions that guarantee that our mapping maps sets of measure zero to sets of measure zero. We start with the problem in general Sobolev spaces, after which we establish a better result for mappings of finite distortion. Then we introduce a natural class of counterexamples to statements of this type and finally we give a weak condition under which the preimage of a set of measure zero has measure zero for mappings of finite distortion.

The Growth of Greater Manila

2017

Manila is one of the largest megacities in the world. It has grown from the original settlements at the mouth of the Pasig River and the walled Spanish city of Intramuros. The American period saw major plans drawn by architect/planner Daniel Burnham to transform Manila in a US-style capital city, while the Commonwealth saw new plans to create a capital, Quezon City, also largely inspired by American models such as Washington DC. Those plans were only partially implemented. Today, Manila has become a complex metropolis, with several business centers taking over from downtown Manila. Among them, Makati, Ortigas and Bonifacio Global City appear as the true engines of economic growth in the cou…
