Rewetting of a hot vertical surface by liquid sprays
2005
Hot surfaces rewetting interests several technological fields. A very important application is in nuclear reactors technology, where it governs the cooling of overheated fuel elements during hypothesized loss of coolant accidents (LOCAs). This phenomenon is also important in many normal processes and accidental situations taking place in conventional processes. For example when the integrity of metallic containers, filled by toxic or dangerous substances, is endangered by a hypothetical fire. The rewetting consists in the re-establishment of coolant in contact with metallic surfaces become dried due to high temperature. To this end cold liquid is injected on these surfaces via sprays or other …
Some regularity results on the ‘relativistic’ heat equation
2008
AbstractWe prove some partial regularity results for the entropy solution u of the so-called relativistic heat equation. In particular, under some assumptions on the initial condition u0, we prove that ut(t) is a Radon measure in RN. Moreover, if u0 is log-concave inside its support Ω, Ω being a convex set, then we show the solution u(t) is also log-concave in its support Ω(t). This implies its smoothness in Ω(t). In that case we can give a simpler characterization of the notion of entropy solution.
Critical points of higher order for the normal map of immersions in Rd
2012
We study the critical points of the normal map v : NM -> Rk+n, where M is an immersed k-dimensional submanifold of Rk+n, NM is the normal bundle of M and v(m, u) = m + u if u is an element of NmM. Usually, the image of these critical points is called the focal set. However, in that set there is a subset where the focusing is highest, as happens in the case of curves in R-3 with the curve of the centers of spheres with contact of third order with the curve. We give a definition of r-critical points of a smooth map between manifolds, and apply it to study the 2 and 3-critical points of the normal map in general and the 2-critical points for the case k = n = 2 in detail. In the later case we a…
LE PRIORITÀ DEL FEAMP IN SICILIA E LA SUA ATTUAZIONE A METÀ “GIRO”
2018
Varieties of Vagueness, Fuzziness and a few foundational (and ontological) questions
2011
In this paper we discuss the multifaceted nature of vagueness, the limits of (standard) set theory in dealing with the foundational aspects that a really innovating theory of vagueness should manifest, and the difficul- ties in outlining the possible features that such a type of new formalism should exhibit in order to be able to deal with such innovative aspects. We shall highlight some aspects of the role that Fuzzy Set Theory (FST) can play in this process.
Estimation of formamide harmonic and anharmonic modes in the Kohn-Sham limit using the polarization consistent basis sets.
2010
Formamide harmonic and anharmonic frequencies of fundamental vibrations in the gas phase and in several solvents were successfully estimated in the B3LYP Kohn-Sham complete basis set limit (KS CBS). CBS results were obtained by extrapolating a power function (two-parameter formula) to the results calculated with polarization-consistent basis sets. Anharmonic corrections using the second order perturbation treatment (PT2) and hybrid B3LYP functional combined with polarization consistent pc-n (n = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) and several Pople’s basis sets were analyzed for all fundamental formamide vibrational modes in the gas phase and solution. Solvent effects were modeled within a PCM method. The anhar…
True V or not True V, That is the Question
2016
In this paper we intend to argue that: (1) the question `True V or not True V' is central to both the philosophical and mathematical investigations of the foundations of mathematics; (2) when posed within a framework in which set theory is seen as a science of objects, the question `True V or not True V' generates a dilemma each horn of which turns out to be unacceptable; (3) a plausible way out of the dilemma mentioned at (2) is provided by an approach to set theory according to which this is considered to be a science of structures.
Contextual diversity favors the learning of new words in children regardless of their comprehension skills
2021
Available online 6 November 2021 Recent research has shown the benefits of high contextual diversity, defined as the number of different contexts in which a word appears, when incidentally learning new words. These benefits have been found both in laboratory settings and in ecological settings such as the classroom during regular hours. To examine the nature of this effect in young readers aged 11–13 years, we analyzed whether these benefits are modulated by the individuals’ reading comprehension scores; that is, would better comprehenders benefit the most from contextual diversity? The manipulation of contextual diversity was done by inserting the novel words into three different contexts/…
Development of Methods for the Classification of Vegetable Oils According to Their Botanical Origin
2012
The aim of this work was to construct an LDA model able to classify vegetable oils according to their botanical origin using FTIR spectroscopy data. Also, FTIR data treatment by MLR was used to detect and quantify EVOO adulteration with other low cost edible oils. For these purposes, the vegetable oils shown in Table 5.1 were used. The FTIR spectra of these 30 oil samples were then measured. In all cases, at least two spectra were recorded for each sample. As indicated in this table, four samples of each botanical origin were used to construct a training set in the classification studies, while the remaining samples of each category were employed to evaluate the prediction capability of the…
Efficient Modeling of NMR Parameters in Carbon Nanosystems
2015
Rapid growth of nanoscience and nanotechnology requires new and more powerful modeling tools. Efficient theoretical modeling of large molecular systems at the ab initio and Density Functional Theory (DFT) levels of theory depends critically on the size and completeness of the basis set used. The recently designed variants of STO-3G basis set (STO-3Gel, STO-3Gmag), modified to correctly predict electronic and magnetic properties were tested on simple models of pristine and functionalized carbon nanotube (CNT) systems and fullerenes using the B3LYP and VSXC density functionals. Predicted geometries, vibrational properties, and HOMO/LUMO gaps of the model systems, calculated with typical 6-31G…
