Polyvascular subclinical atherosclerosis in familial hypercholesterolemia: The role of cholesterol burden and gender
2019
International audience; BACKGROUND AND AIM:Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) is a genetic disease characterized by a heterogeneous phenotype. The assessment of cardiovascular (CV) risk is challenging for HeFH. Cholesterol burden (CB) allows to estimate the lifelong exposure to high levels of cholesterol. The aim of this study was to analyze the distribution of subclinical atherosclerosis and the relationship between atherosclerosis and the CB in a sample of HeFH patients, focusing on sex-related differences.METHODS AND RESULTS:154 asymptomatic HeFH subjects underwent coronary-artery-calcium score (CACs) and Doppler ultrasound of carotid and femoral arteries. Yearly lipid pro…
Exacerbated experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis in mast-cell-deficient KitW-sh/W-sh mice
2011
Mast cell (MC)-deficient c-Kit mutant Kit(W/W-v) mice are protected against experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model of multiple sclerosis, suggesting a detrimental role for MCs in this disease. To further investigate the role of MCs in EAE, we took advantage of a recently characterized model of MC deficiency, Kit(W-sh/W-sh). Surprisingly, we observed that myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG)(35-55)-induced chronic EAE was exacerbated in Kit(W-sh/W-sh) compared with Kit(+/+) mice. Kit(W-sh/W-sh) mice showed more inflammatory foci in the central nervous system (CNS) and increased T-cell response against myelin. To understand whether the discrepant results obtaine…
Psychological intimate partner violence: the major predictor of posttraumatic stress disorder in abused women.
2004
Intimate partner violence (IPV) significantly impacts women mental and physical wellbeing and therefore represents a worldwide public health problem. A clear association between IPV and increased risk to develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been documented. However, few studies examined how different features of IPV (physical, psychological, sexual) interact with other traumatic stress experiences (physical, psychological and sexual childhood abuse and adulthood victimization by other/s than the partner) in determining PTSD. Women abused by the partner (n=75) were compared with non-abused control women (n=52). Information about sociodemographic profile and relevant personal char…
Network Analysis of Persistent Somatic Symptoms in Two Clinical Patient Samples
2021
OBJECTIVE Previous attempts to group persistent somatic symptoms (PSS) with factor-analytic approaches have obtained heterogeneous results. An alternative approach that seems to be more suitable is the network theory. Compared to factor analysis, which focuses on the underlying factor of symptoms, network analysis focuses on the dynamic relationships and interactions among different symptoms. The main aim of this study is to apply the network approach to examine the heterogeneous structure of PSS within two clinical samples. METHODS The first dataset consisted of N = 254 outpatients who were part of a multicentre study. The second dataset included N = 574 inpatients, both with somatoform di…
Parental Stress and ASD
2016
The objectives of this study were (a) to evaluate parental stress in parents of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD group) and compare it with the stress in parents of children with typical development (comparison group); (b) to study the relationship between parental stress, autism severity, and both verbal and performance IQ; and (c) to study the relationship between parental stress and resilience. Parental stress in the ASD group was clinically significant and higher than in the comparison group. The child’s autism severity was a significant predictor of parental stress related to the child’s distractibility and hyperactivity. The child’s verbal IQ was a significant predictor o…
Fuzzy logic approach to predict vehicle crash severity from acceleration data
2015
Vehicle crash is a complex behavior to be investigated as a challenging topic in terms of dynamical modeling. On this aim, fuzzy logic can be utilized to analyze the crash dynamics rapidly and simply. In this paper, the experimental data of the frontal crash is recorded using an accelerometer located at the centre of the gravity of the vehicle. The acceleration signal was the raw data from which the collision intensity expressed by the kinetic energy and the jerk were derived. The fuzzy logic model was then developed from the two inputs namely kinetic energy and jerk. The output variable is the crash severity expressed as the dynamic crash. The result shows that the jerk contributes much to…
Does abdominal obesity influence immunological response to SARS-CoV-2 infection?
2021
Several hundred studies, 40 systematic reviews, and nearly 20 meta-analyses had been published by early 2021, confirming an increased need for medical services for people living with overweight or ...
Grey matter microstructural alterations in schizophrenia patients with treatment-resistant auditory verbal hallucinations.
2021
Treatment-resistant auditory verbal hallucinations (TRAVH) are a relatively prevalent and devastating symptom in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ). Even though their pathological mechanisms are poorly understood, they seem to differ from those underlying non-hallucinating SCZ.& nbsp; In this study, we characterise structural brain changes in SCZ patients with TRAVH. With respect to nonhallucinating patients and healthy controls, we studied macrostructural grey matter changes through cortical thickness and subcortical volumetric data. Additionally, we analysed microstructural differences across groups using intracortical and subcortical mean diffusivity data. This latter imaging metric has b…
Childhood Trauma increases suicidal behaviour in a treatment-resistant depression population: a FACE-DR report
2021
International audience; Objective: In addition to heredity, exposure to early-life adversity is an important predisposing risk factor of suicidal behaviour. Although the association between Childhood Trauma (CT) and suicide risk is well documented, interactions between CT and suicidal behaviour in Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD) populations have received little coverage. This study aimed to evaluate i) association between CT and suicidal behaviour in a TRD population, and ii) the role of personality traits and impulsiveness as potential factors of mediation in these associations. Methods: Patients were recruited from a cohort of the French network of TRD expert centers. Depressive sympt…
Is backward disequilibrium in the elderly caused by an abnormal perception of verticality? A pilot study
2007
International audience; OBJECTIVE: We hypothesised that backward disequilibrium (BD), defined by a posterior position of the centre of mass with respect to the base of support, could be caused by a backward tilt in the perception of verticality. METHODS: The relationship between BD, the perception of verticality, and the history of falls in 25 subjects aged 84.5+/-7.4 years was analysed. An original ordinal scale, the BD scale (BDS), was used to quantify BD. Postural (PV) and haptic verticals (HV) were measured in sagittal plane. RESULTS: BDS scores closely correlated with the number of falls (r = 0.81, p =10(-5)). The more the PV was tilted backward, the greater the BDS scores (r = -0.95, …
