Prediction of Ductile Fractures Occurrence in Deep Drawing of Square Boxes

1996

Abstract The authors propose a new approach for the prediction of tearing in the deep drawing process of square boxes. Such an approach is based on a damage mechanics formulation and in particular on the yield condition for damaging materials proposed by Tvergaard and Needleman and on a strain controlled nucleation model. The flow rule associated to the yield condition is introduced in a finite element explicit formulation founded on the solution of the dynamic equilibrium equation and on an explicit time integration scheme. By this way the developed model allows to calculate the void volume fraction value during the deep drawing process of square boxes and consequently to predict the insur…

Spontaneous Spatiotemporal Ordering of Shape Oscillations Enhances Cell Migration

2019

The migration of cells is relevant for processes such as morphogenesis, wound healing, and invasion of cancer cells. In order to move, single cells deform cyclically. However, it is not understood how these shape oscillations influence collective properties. Here we demonstrate, using numerical simulations, that the interplay of directed motion, shape oscillations, and excluded volume enables cells to locally "synchronize" their motion and thus enhance collective migration. Our model captures elongation and contraction of crawling ameboid cells controlled by an internal clock with a fixed period, mimicking the internal cycle of biological cells. We show that shape oscillations are crucial f…

Identifying individuality and variability in team tactics by means of statistical shape analysis and multilayer perceptrons.

2012

Abstract Offensive and defensive systems of play represent important aspects of team sports. They include the players’ positions at certain situations during a match, i.e., when players have to be on specific positions on the court. Patterns of play emerge based on the formations of the players on the court. Recognition of these patterns is important to react adequately and to adjust own strategies to the opponent. Furthermore, the ability to apply variable patterns of play seems to be promising since they make it harder for the opponent to adjust. The purpose of this study is to identify different team tactical patterns in volleyball and to analyze differences in variability. Overall 120 s…

A Damage Identification Approach for Offshore Jacket Platforms Using Partial Modal Results and Artificial Neural Networks

2018

This paper presents a damage identification method for offshore jacket platforms using partially measured modal results and based on artificial intelligence neural networks. Damage identification indices are first proposed combining information of six modal results and natural frequencies. Then, finite element models are established, and damages in structural members are assumed by reducing the structural elastic modulus. From the finite element analysis for a training sample, both the damage identification indices and the damages are obtained, and neural networks are trained. These trained networks are further tested and used for damage prediction of structural members. The calculation res…

Gaze Parameters in the Analysis of Ambiguous Geometric Shapes.

2021

This study explores perceptual organisation and shape perception when viewing a tetragon and an additional element (a dot) that is located at varying positions and distances next to the tetragon. The aim of the study is to determine the factors that can alter the interpretation of object configuration and impact whether the presented tetragon is perceived as a diamond or a square. Methods used in this study are a forced-choice task as a subjective measurement and eye tracking as an objective measurement of perceptual processes. Overall, 31 stimuli were presented to the participants: a tetragon in two different sizes with an additional element (a dot) located inside or outside the object at…

Temperature-induced martensite in magnetic shape memory Fe2MnGa observed by photoemission electron microscopy

2012

The magnetic domain structure in single crystals of a Heusler shape memory compound near the composition Fe2MnGa was observed during phase transition by photoelectron emission microscopy at Beamline 11.0.1.1 of the Advanced Light Source. The behavior is comparable with recent observations of an adaptive martensite phase in prototype Ni2MnGa, although the pinning in the recent work is an epitaxial interface and in this work the effective pinning plane is a boundary between martensitic variants that transform in a self-accommodating way from the single crystal austenite phase present at high temperatures. Temperature dependent observations of the twinning structure give information as to the …

Symmetry breaking in a constrained cheeger type isoperimetric inequality

2015

We study the optimal constant in a Sobolev inequality for BV functions with zero mean value and vanishing outside a bounded open set. We are interested in finding the best possible embedding constant in terms of the measure of the domain alone. We set up an optimal shape problem and we completely characterize the behavior of optimal domains.

A comparative study of partitioning methods for crowd simulations

2010

The simulation of large crowds of autonomous agents with realistic behavior is still a challenge for several computer research communities. In order to handle large crowds, some scalable architectures have been proposed. Nevertheless, the effective use of distributed systems requires the use of partitioning methods that can properly distribute the workload generated by agents among the existing distributed resources. In this paper, we analyze the use of irregular shape regions (convex hulls) for solving the partitioning problem. We have compared a partitioning method based on convex hulls with two techniques that use rectangular regions. The performance evaluation results show that the conv…

Mesonic enhancement of the weak axial charge and its effect on the half-lives and spectral shapes of first-forbidden J+↔J− decays

2018

The effects of the enhancement of the axial-charge matrix element γ5 were studied in medium heavy and heavy nuclei for first-forbidden J+↔J− decay transitions using the nuclear shell model. Noticeable dependence on the enhancement ϵMEC of the axial-charge matrix element, as well as on the value of the axial-vector coupling constant gA was found in the spectral shapes of $^{93}$Y, $^{95}$Sr, and $^{97}$Y. The importance of the spectrum of $^{138}$Cs in the determination of gA is discussed. Half-life analyses in the A≈95 and A≈135 regions were done, and consistent results gA≈0.90, 0.75, and 0.65, corresponding to the three enhancement scenarios ϵMEC=1.4, 1.7, and 2.0, were obtained. Connectio…

Embryonic stem cell differentiation studied by FT-IR spectroscopy

2007

We propose, here, an FT-IR method to monitor the spontaneous differentiation of murine embryonic stem (ES) cells in their early development. Principal component analysis and subsequent linear discriminant analysis enabled us to segregate stem cell spectra into separate clusters corresponding to different differentiation times - and to identify the most significant spectral changes during differentiation. Between days 4 to 7 of differentiation, these spectral changes in the protein amide I band (1700-1600 cm(-1)) and in the nucleic acid absorption region (1050-850 cm(-1)) indicated that mRNA translation was taking place and that specific proteins were produced, reflecting the appearance of a…
