Diversification and performance in the mobile app market: The role of the platform ecosystem
2019
Abstract We examine the effect of app developers' product line diversification decision on their performance and shed light on whether the type of platform ecosystem (open versus closed) where they commercialize apps influences this effect. We compare the revenue performance of diversified and specialized developers in Apple's App Store and Google Play. We show that in the Apple's App Store (closed platform) diversified developers always display lower performance than their specialized counterparts. In Google Play (open platform) diversification is beneficial in categories where diversified developers have predominant market share, whereas it is detrimental in categories dominated by specia…
Multi-party metering: An architecture for privacy-preserving profiling schemes
2013
Several privacy concerns about the massive deploy- ment of smart meters have been arisen recently. Namely, it has been shown that the fine-grained temporal traces generated by these meters can be correlated with different users behaviors. A new architecture, called multi-party metering, for enabling privacy-preserving analysis of high-frequency metering data without requiring additional complexity at the smart meter side is here proposed. The idea is to allow multiple entities to get a share of the high-frequency metering data rather than the real data, where this share does not reveal any information about the real data. By aggregating the shares provided by different users and publishing …
SOCIO-CULTURAL FACTORS AND INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIVENESS
2015
Socio-cultural factors – shared values, norms and attitudes are significant, but less acknowledged sources of international competitiveness. Previous studies have found socio-cultural factors positively affecting various aspects of international competitiveness – entrepreneurship, innovation, productivity and international cooperation. These factors are more sustainable and less affected by external environment changes in comparison with the traditional factors. Socio-cultural factors provide an opportunity to develop competitiveness strategies based on unique advantages. This research aims to explore the impact of socio-cultural factors on international competiveness in small, open economi…
The role of Institutions in explaining wage determination in the Euro Area: a panel cointegration approach
2016
Over the last 15 years, the evolution of labor costs has been very diverse across EMU countries. Since wages have important second-round effects on prices and competitiveness, and EMU countries do not have the tool of the nominal exchange rate to correct for such imbalances, understanding the determinants of the wage is a matter of increasing concern and debate. We estimate the equilibrium wage equation for the Euro Area over the period 1995-2011 using panel cointegration techniques that allow for cross-section dependence and structural breaks. The results show that the equilibrium wage has a positive relation with productivity and negative relation with unemployment, as expected. We also i…
A review of DEA models when the internal structure of the decision making units is considered
2005
Classical Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) models consider each Decision Making Unit (DMU), whose relative efficiency they evaluate, as a "black box", i.e., its internal structure is disregarded. The paper presents a comprehensive framework of the most advanced theoretical findings in DEA when the internal structure of the. DMUs is taken into account, thus giving directions for novel applications of such methodology and introducing it as a powerful toot for complex processes performance evaluation.
This contribution proposes the analysis of some legal instruments offered by private autonomy in the corporate sphere, in …
Influenza Vaccination and COVID-19 Outcomes in People Older than 50 Years: Data from the Observational Longitudinal SHARE Study
2022
Existing literature on the association between influenza vaccination and COVID-19 infection/outcomes is conflicting. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the association between influenza vaccination and COVID-19 outcomes in a large cohort of adults who participated in the SHARE (Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe). Information regarding influenza vaccination in the previous year, and medical and demographic characteristics, were self-reported. Positivity for COVID-19, symptomatology, and hospitalization were also ascertained using self-reported information. An adjusted logistic regression analysis (including 15 baseline factors or propensity score) was used to assess the asso…
The Common Grounds of Adherence? A Qualitative Analysis of Young Partisans’ Collective Identity
2019
While party identification is one of the mostly used concepts for the explanation of vote choice, the components of party identification and the collective identity of party adherents were never explored systematically. After conceptualizing party identification within the social identity approach, we propose a research framework for the analysis of the collective identity of party adherents. Finally, in a first explorative attempt, we use this framework to analyze, as an example, the collective identity of adherents of the German parties SPD and the Greens. Although the two parties are part of the same ideological camp, we found that they both emphasize the importance of shared values, iss…
International student mobility in Southern-Latin Europe: beyond the EU logics, towards a new space
2018
This paper discusses international student mobility (ISM) in Southern-Latin Europe, specifically Italy, Portugal, and Spain, analysing the inflow of international students as reflected in the UNESCO, OECD and European Commission databases. Only recently Italy, Portugal and Spain, as latecomers, have become more actively involved in ISM dynamics. This trend has been a response to EU pressures to internationalization, instrumented through the consolidation of the Bologna process and the need to build a common space of higher education. The analysis shows that at the intra-European level Italy, Portugal and Spain share similar ISM patterns; however, in the global context other logics shape ISM…
