Shock wave therapy versus conventional surgery in the treatment of calcifying tendinitis of the shoulder.

A prospective quasirandomized study was performed to compare the effects of surgical extirpation (Group I, 29 patients) with the outcome after high-energy extracorporeal shock wave therapy (Group II, 50 patients; 3,000 impulses of an energy flux density of 0.6 mJ/mm2) in patients with a chronic calcifying tendinitis in the supraspinatus tendon. Symptoms and demographic data of the two groups were comparable. According to the University of California Los Angeles Rating System, the mean score in Group I was 30 points with 75% good or excellent results after 12 months, and 32 points with 90% good or excellent results after 24 months. Novel treatments are needed to counteract the molecular mechanisms of GBM growth and drug resistance. Heat shock protein-27 protects human bronchial epithelial cells against oxidative stress-mediated apoptosis: possible implication in asthma.

Inflammation of the human bronchial epithelium, as observed in asthmatics, is characterized by the selective death of the columnar epithelial cells, which desquamate from the basal cells. Tissue repair initiates from basal cells that resist inflammation. Here, we have evaluated the extent of apoptosis as well as the Hsp27 level of expression in epithelial cells from bronchial biopsy samples taken from normal and asthmatic subjects. Hsp27 is a chaperone whose expression protects against oxidative stress. We report that in asthmatic subjects the basal epithelium cells express a high level of Hsp27 but no apoptotic morphology. Successful treatment of life-threatening bleeding after cesarean section with recombinant activated factor VII.

Hemorrhagic shock developed in a 29-year-old nullipara without coagulopathy after emergency caesarean section. Treatment with uterotonic drugs, prostaglandins, and conservative procedures with transfusion of packed red cells and fresh-frozen plasma failed to control the diffuse vaginal and uterine bleeding. Finally an intravenous bolus injection of 90 μg/kg recombinant activated factor VII (rFVIIa, NovoSeven®, Novo Nordisk A/S, Bagsvaerd, Denmark), was given and showed success within 20 minutes after administration, without any side effects.

Today, nearly 90% of common bile duct stones are extracted endoscopically. Problems are encountered if there are large stones or a duct stenosis. Extracorporeal piezoelectric lithotripsy (EPL) as well as intracorporeal electrohydraulic lithotripsy (EHL) serve as an alternative to surgical intervention for those few patients in whom endoscopic measures have failed. Fatal multi-organ failure following anaphylactic shock induced by ceftriaxone

In the latest years, based on the wide use of cephalosporins for antibiotic therapy, a large interest focused on the identification of causal relationship of adverse reactions after their prescription. We report a case of fatal anaphylactic shock following the administration of ceftriaxone in a woman who had tolerated the previous exposure to the drug. This case adds a contribution to the few cases reported in literature to further suggest the possibility of severe anaphylaxis after the administration of ceftriaxone even in patients without any previous reaction to this drug.

In this paper an agent-based model of self organized criticality is developed in a network economy characterized by lead time and a threshold behavior of firms. Instead of considering the aggregate production of the economy as a whole, we focus on both the propagation and amplification effects of a demand shock in the sectorial productions of a multi-agent supply chain. We study a static network structure representing a relation of firms in a lower-upper stream in an industrial organization. Protein stability under changing conditions is of vital importance for the cell and under the control of a fine-tuned network of molecular chaperones. Aging and age-related neurodegenerative diseases are directly associated with enhanced protein instability. Employing C. elegans expressing GFP-tagged luciferase as a reporter for evaluation of protein stability we show that the chaperoning strategy of body wall muscle cells and neurons is significantly different and that both are differently affected by aging.
