I nomi di Leonardo Sciascia

2020

View of Open Government: in Italy and in the Sicilian Region

2017

The web, if used in connection with Open Government practices, it becomes anextraordinary controlling method not only to attack inefficiencies, corruption and badadministration, but also to promote transparency and develop participation practices.Complete transparency and open data represents lawfulness and efficiency outpostswhich are absolutely necessary to public administrations, because they are the newfrontier of citizenship rights and participatory democracy. This paper argues in favour of the anti-corruption provisions applications and thesubsequent applicator decree (Laws no. 190/2012 and 124/2015 and legislative decrees 33/2013 and now 97/2016) for the purposes of complete administr…

Extortion, firm's size and the sectoral allocation of capital

2014

Extortion of firms is a typical activity of organized crime such as Mafia. We develop a simple principal-agent model to find the Mafia-optimal extortion as a function of firm’s observable characteristics, specifically firm’s size. We test the predictions of the model on a unique dataset on extortion in Sicily, the Italian region where Mafia is most active. Our empirical findings show that i) extortion moderately increases with firm’s size ii) extortion is regressive, the average extortion rate ranging from approximately 40% of operating profits for small firms to 2% for large firms iii) extortion turns average cost function decreasing, therefore influencing market competition

The Economics of Extortion: Theory and Evidence on the Sicilian Mafia

2019

This paper studies extortion of firms operating in legal sectors by a profit-maximizing criminal organization. We develop a simple principal-agent model under asymmetric information to find the Mafia-optimal extortion as a function of firms' observable characteristics, namely size and sector. We test the predictions of the model on a unique dataset on extortion in Sicily, the Italian region where the most powerful criminal organization, the Mafia, operates. In line with our theoretical model, our empirical findings show that extortion is strongly concave in firm's size and highly regressive. The percentage of profits appropriated by Mafia ranges from 40% for small firms to 2% for large firm…

Early human peopling of Sicily: Evidence from the Mesolithic skeletal remains from Grotta d'Oriente

2010

The site of Grotta d'Oriente, Island of Favignana, Sicily has yielded the complete skeleton of an adult female (OB) dated to the Mesolithic age. The cranial morphometry of this individual can provide us with some useful information about the peopling of Sicily in the Early Holocene period.Morphological affinities of OB and other Sicilian Mesolithic specimens were assessed to verify hypotheses concerning the early peopling of Sicily.Craniofacial metric data were employed in a comparative analysis with European Upper Palaeolithic (UP), Mesolithic, Neolithic, and Copper/Bronze age samples, and contemporary Italians. Both a model-free and a model-bound approach were used not only to calculate c…

The Sicilian periphrasis aviri a + infinitive in contemporary Sicilian dialect

2010

This article focuses on the periphrasis aviri a/da + infinitive in the contemporary sicilian. This construction has attestations since the ancient sicilian and it maintains its use still today, also due to the form’s polysemy that allows to express a temporal meaning and a modal one. Following a descriptive approach in the grammaticalization framework, we analyze the features and the meaning of the periphrasis. For the data analysis, we have used the answers supplied from a sample of informants to some traslating questions and the attestations of the form in some spoken passages collected within the inquiries carried out using the sociolinguistic questionnaire of the Atlante Linguistico del…

Valutazione produttive e qualitative di Timilie - Produttive and qualitative evaluation of timilie

2009

Abstract: Productive and qualitative results on four “timilia” population from different West Sicilian pedoclimat…

EFFECT OF ADDING SOLID AND MOLTEN CHOCOLATE ON THE POLYPHENOL CONTENT, CHEMICAL, TEXTURAL, MICROBIOLOGICAL AND SENSORY ASPECTS OF PECORINO SICILIANO …

In this project we used two specific food products, which are typically Sicilian, Pecorino Siciliano cheese and Modica chocolate, that have unique texture and taste. “Chocolate cheese” is produced with the aim of increasing the consumption of cheese especially among children, targeting the purpose of improving public health. In this research we investigated chocolate cheese including solid and molten chocolate in three levels of 5%, 10% and 15% at four ripening times (T0 = fresh, T1 = 2 weeks, T2 = 4 weeks and T3 = 6 weeks). The results showed that the addition of chocolate significantly (p ≤ 0.05) decreased the pH, ash and protein content of the Pecorino Siciliano cheese, whereas it had no…
