Elements of perceived good physician leadership and their relation to leadership theory.
2021
Purpose This research paper aims to discover the elements of good physician leadership as perceived by physicians and to find out how the findings connect to the leadership theory. Design/methodology/approach The subjects (n = 50) of this qualitative study are physicians from four hierarchical levels (residents/specialising physicians, specialists, heads of departments and chief physicians). Content analysis with a constructivist-interpretative approach by thematisation was the chosen method, and it was also analysed how major leadership theories relate to good physician leadership. Findings Physician leaders are expected to possess the professional skills of physicians, understand how the…

”Englanti jyrää” : kieltenopettajien keinoja ja ehdotuksia kielivalintojen monipuolistamiseksi
2021
Suomen kouluissa opiskellaan yhä vähemmän ja yhä harvempia vieraita kieliä. Valinnaisten kielten opiskelun suosio on laskenut, ja kielitaito on vaarassa jäädä pelkän englannin varaan. Erilaisia toimenpiteitä, kuten kielen opetuksen varhentaminen, on jo tehty. Aineisto on kerätty tammi-helmikuussa…
The Influence of Instructional Practices on Reading Motivation in Finland
2018
Although the differences between individuals in language and literacy skills and motivation to read start before entering school, teachers and their instructional practices play an important role in the development of reading skills and the various aspects of motivation, especially children’s interest in reading. Interest in reading has been reported to contribute to the reading activity and to the amount of reading which, in turn, promote students’ reading performance. It has been assumed that children’s previous success with learning the basics of reading has provided them with positive feedback about the learning situation, thereby strengthening their interest in reading. Teachers and th…
Omintakeisen kansankynttilän kintereillä
2015
Kirja-arvostelu teoksesta: Suni, Hannu: Röyhkeä opettaja. Esa Paavo-Kallion todellisuuskäsitykset, nälkävuodet ja maailmojen konflikti 1867–1913.. Suomen Kirkkohistoriallinen Seura, 2014. 200 sivua. Teologi Hannu Suni tarkastelee kirkkohistorian piiriin kuuluvassa tutkimuksessaan, kuinka erään kansakoulunopettajan toiminta kuvaa samalla hänen aikansa yhteiskunnallista ja hengellistä murrosta 1800-luvun lopulla.
The feasibility of working memory tablet tasks in predicting scholastic skills in classroom settings
2019
Cognitive assessment in natural group settings facilitates data collection but poses threats to the validity. In this study, tablet‐based working memory (WM) tasks, the counting span, and reading span were used in predicting 12‐year‐old children's (N = 837) scholastic skills and fluid intelligence in a classroom with environmental noise. WM tasks had excellent internal consistency, correlated with scholastic skills, and accounted for more of the variance in cognitive performance (grade point average, fluid intelligence, scholastic skills) compared with individually administered (n = 190) digit span task. Furthermore, the multilevel analysis revealed that compared with the classrooms with no…
How physical activity, fitness, and motor skills contribute to math performance: Working memory as a mediating factor
2021
Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine whether physical activity, fitness and motor skills have indirect association with math performance via cognitive outcomes and if so, through which aspects of cognition? Methods This study comprised 311 6th–9th grade adolescents (12–17y [M age=14.0y], 59% girls) from seven schools throughout Finland in 2015. Math performance was measured via a teacher-rated math achievement and the Basic Arithmetic test. Cognitive functions were measured by broad cognitive test battery. Physical activity was assessed with a self-reported questionnaire and a hip-worn accelerometer. Aerobic fitness was estimated using a maximal 20-m shuttle run test, muscular f…
Cognitive consequences of the timing of puberty
2018
In this paper, we use British cohort data to study the degree to which children at different stages of pubertal development at age 11 and 16 differ in their cognitive and behavioral outcomes at age 16 as well as in their completed educational attainment and adult earnings. Controlling for age 7 cognitive skills, region of birth, father's socioeconomic status and parents’ education, we show that boys’ late pubertal development is associated with lower levels of cognitive skills at 16, lower final educational attainment, and lower earnings in adulthood. For girls we find a similar negative relationship between late puberty and cognitive skills, but only imprecise relationships between the tim…
Cognitive predictors of counting skills
2018
Rote counting skills have found to be a strong predictor of later arithmetic and reading fluency. However, knowledge of the underlying cognitive factors influencing counting skill is very limited. Present study examined to what extent language skills (phonology, vocabulary, and morphology), nonverbal reasoning skills, and memory at the age of five could explain counting skill at the beginning of first grade. Gender, parents’ education level and child’s persistence were included as control variables. The question was examined in a longitudinal sample (N = 101) with a structural equation model. Results showed that language skills together with memory, nonverbal reasoning skills and parent’s e…
Korona opettajan osaamisen haastajana
2021
Tarkastelemme suomalaisen opettajan osaamista suhteessa korona-ajan tuomiin uusiin opettajuuden haasteisiin. Opettajan työ on monipuolista osaamista edellyttävää asiantuntijatyötä. Opettajan keskeinen osaaminen on koottu seitsemän yliopiston yhteistyönä tutkimusperustaiseen Opettajan osaamisen karttaan.
