Closed-Loop Acoustic Stimulation During Sleep in Children With Epilepsy: A Hypothesis-Driven Novel Approach to Interact With Spike-Wave Activity and …

2019

Slow waves, the electroencephalographic (EEG) hallmark of deep sleep, can be systematically manipulated by acoustic stimulation: stimulation time-locked to the down phase of slow waves reduces, whereas stimulation time-locked to the up phase increases slow waves. Spike-waves during sleep seem to be related to slow waves, raising the question of whether spike-waves can be systematically influenced by such acoustic stimulation. In five pediatric patients, all-night EEG was recorded, combined with real-time slow wave detection. Throughout the night, acoustic stimulation was performed in a 3 × 5-min-block design (no stimulation—stimulation—no stimulation). Tones were applied time-locked either …

Appropriate technology in a Solovian nonlinear growth model

2007

We propose a Solovian growth model with a convex-concave production function and international technological spillovers. We test the empirical implications of the model, analysing the effects of the productivity slowdown that followed the oil shocks of the 1970s. We argue that this slowdown, altering the world income distribution, affected the pattern of international technological spillovers, taking the poorest countries further away from the technological leaders, and therefore unable to exploit their technologies. The result is the emergence of a poverty trap for low-income countries.

Antithrombotic therapy of Cerebral cavernous malformations

2020

Abstract Cavernous malformations are recognized as the most common vascular anomalies in the brain, that often lead to hemorrhage with neurological symptoms. Usually the treatment is surgical removal or stereotactic radiotherapy. We present a case of a slow-flow vascular anomaly located in the cavernous sinus with recurrent partial thrombotic areas. Inspired by treatment of peripheral venous anomalies antithrombotic therapy was initiated instead of surgery or stereotactic radiotherapy. This led to complete spontaneous resolution of the lesion and normalization of symptoms within nine months. The patient never showed any symptoms over a period of eight years while continuing antithrombotic t…

Slow Populations and Tourism

2013

Our initial perspective is that the dynamics of territories and cities/towns that are tourist resorts (or aspire to being one) can be analysed from the point of view of the ‘population’ concept, dear to a certain trend in socio-spatial analysis. Our chapter concentrates particularly on those who, by need or will, pass through places without their own vehicle, but using collective or public transport, as well as walking or cycling, rather than by walker or wheelchair. These ‘slow populations’ enter into a relation with the places they visit or stay at, with the people who live there and the other tourists, following certain methods of which we suggest a sort of classification, aimed at a bet…

Mobilità e Urbanistica nella città diffusa

2014

The town that spreads in the territory no longer has “limits”, this urban sprawl produces the use of the land and an inevitable increase in demand for mobility. Since the contemporary town, organized only for those who use their car, does not guarantee those who want to move using public transport so a “slow” mobility could contribute to improving the quality of life in towns. This study reflects on a case study characterized by a continuous urbanization – a widespread town traveled “quickly” - to transform it, with sustainable urban planning and a multidisciplinary approach, in a landscape to cross through the design of different paths for different “speed”, for different types of users.
