Pancreatitis-associated protein in patients with celiac disease: Serum levels and immunocytochemical localization in small intestine

1997

Since PAP is a stress protein expressed in human pancreas during pancreatitis but also constitutively synthesized in the small intestine, we looked whether its expression would be altered in patients with celiac disease. Serum PAP concentrations were determined consecutively in 54 patients with celiac disease on a free diet (group A), in 47 patients with celiac disease on a gluten-free diet (group B), in 22 patients with other intestinal pathologies but with normal intestinal mucosa (group C), in 14 patients with retarded growth, no gastrointestinal disease and normal intestinal mucosa (group D), and in 17 controls (group E). Serum PAP levels (ng/ml) were significantly higher in group A (12…

Coffee drinking and risk of preterm birth

2006

Objectives: We analysed the association between coffee drinking before and during the three trimesters of pregnancy and the risk of preterm birth of babies normal for gestational age (NGA) or small for gestational age (SGA). Methods: Case-control study conducted in University clinics of North Italy. Cases were 502 women who delivered at < weeks of gestation. The controls included 1966 women who gave birth at term (≥37 weeks of gestation) to healthy infants on randomly selected days at the hospitals where cases had been identified. Results: There was inverse association for coffee consumption in the third trimester of pregnancy in SGA cases compared to NGA (heterogeneity test between OR: χ12…

How should we manage atherogenic dyslipidemia in women with polycystic ovary syndrome?

2007

Despite their young age, women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have increased cardiovascular risk. Besides normal concentrations of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, dyslipidemia is very common and includes elevated triglyceride levels and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations. Recent findings also showed that women with PCOS have qualitative LDL alterations, with increased levels of atherogenic small, dense LDL particles. Such lipid abnormalities constitute a common form of dyslipidemia, the so-called atherogenic lipoprotein phenotype (ALP), associated with a greater cardiovascular risk. Weight reduction and increased physical activity may constitute first-…

Associations of maternal circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 concentration with pregnancy and birth outcomes

2015

Objective To investigate the association of maternal circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 [25(OH)D3] concentration with pregnancy and birth outcomes. Design Prospective cohort study. Setting Four geographical areas of Spain, 2003–2008. Population Of 2382 mother–child pairs participating in the INfancia y Medio Ambiente (INMA) Project. Methods Maternal circulating 25(OH)D3 concentration was measured in pregnancy (mean [SD] 13.5 [2.2] weeks of gestation). We tested associations of maternal 25(OH)D3 concentration with pregnancy and birth outcomes. Main outcome measures Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), preterm delivery, caesarean section, fetal growth restriction (FGR) and small-for-gestational…

Centenarians, but not octogenarians, up-regulate the expression of microRNAs

2012

Centenarians exhibit extreme longevity and a remarkable compression of morbidity. They have a unique capacity to maintain homeostatic mechanisms. Since small non-coding RNAs (including microRNAs) are implicated in the regulation of gene expression, we hypothesised that longevity of centenarians may reflect alterations in small non-coding RNA expression. We report the first comparison of microRNAs expression profiles in mononuclear cells from centenarians, octogenarians and young individuals resident near Valencia, Spain. Principal Component Analysis of the expression of 15,644 mature microRNAs and, 2,334 snoRNAs and scaRNAs in centenarians revealed a significant overlap with profiles in you…

Modulation by 5-HT3 and 5-HT4 receptors of the release of 5-hydroxytryptamine from the guinea-pig small intestine.

1993

The effects of agonists and antagonists of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) receptors on the release of endogenous 5-HT from enterochromaffin cells were studied in the vascularly perfused isolated guinea-pig small intestine. The experiments were done in the presence of tetrodotoxin in order to exclude a neuronally mediated influence on 5-HT release. The 5-HT3 receptor agonist 2-methyl-5-HT increased 5-HT release, and this effect was antagonized by 1 nmol/l tropisetron. Nanomolar concentrations of tropisetron, MDL 72,222 and granisetron decreased 5-HT release. Ondansetron (0.1 and 1 mumol/l) did not modify 5-HT release. 5-Methoxytryptamine, BIMU8 and cisapride concentration-dependently inhibited 5…

Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor 1– 5-Hydroxytryptamine 1A Heteroreceptor Complexes and Their Enhancement of Hippocampal Plasticity

2011

Background The hippocampus and its 5-hydroxytryptamine transmission plays an important role in depression related to its involvement in limbic circuit plasticity. Methods The analysis was made with bioluminescence resonance energy transfer, co-immunoprecipitation, in situ proximity ligation assay, binding assay, in cell western and the forced swim test. Results Using bioluminescence resonance energy transfer analysis, fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (FGFR1)-5-hydroxytryptamine 1A (5-HT1A) receptor complexes have been demonstrated and their specificity and agonist modulation characterized. Their presence based on co-immunoprecipitation and proximity ligation assay has also been indicated…

Impact of extrafine formulations of inhaled corticosteroids/long-acting beta-2 agonist combinations on patient-related outcomes in asthma and COPD

2014

Nicola Scichilone,1 Alida Benfante,1 Luca Morandi,2 Federico Bellini,2 Alberto Papi21Biomedical Department of Internal and Specialist Medicine, Section of Pulmonology, University of Palermo, Italy; 2Respiratory Medicine, Department of Medical Sciences, University of Ferrara, Ferrara, ItalyAbstract: Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are among the most common chronic diseases worldwide, characterized by a condition of variable degree of airway obstruction and chronic airway inflammation. A large body of evidence has demonstrated the importance of small airways as a pharmacological target in these clinical conditions. Despite a deeper understanding of the pathophysiologic…

Did Pindar’s scheme really exist?

2017

Abstract: A Greek construction in which the verb is in the 3rd sg. form, while the subject is in the 3rd pl. and, in most cases, in post–verbal position, is called Pindar’s scheme inasmuch as it occurs most frequently in the poems of this author. Various explanations have been provided for this construction and it has also been interpreted as an error. The paper is an attempt at an overall syntactic explanation of the available data.
