An approach for influence estimatation in complex networks : application to the social network Twitter
2019
Influence in complex networks and in particular Twitter has become recently a hot research topic. Detecting most influential users leads to reach a large-scale information diffusion area at low cost, something very useful in marketing or political campaigns. In this thesis, we propose a new approach that considers the several relations between users in order to assess influence in complex networks such as Twitter. We model Twitter as a multiplex heterogeneous network where users, tweets and objects are represented by nodes, and links model the different relations between them (e.g., retweets, mentions, and replies). The multiplex PageRank is applied to data from two datasets in the political…

“The datafication and commodification of Italian schools during the Covid-19 crisis. Implications for policy and future research”
2022
Big Data and algorithms increasingly inform public policymaking and institutional practices, producing an impact on people’s everyday life. An emerging body of scholarly research—Critical Data Studies—has been working on this role shedding light on how society’s current platformisation is linked to a much longer privatization and reorganization of the public sector. This chapter intends to reflect on how the Covid-19 pandemic has dramatically accelerated these processes focusing on school education in particular. Health Big Data and apps have been crucial to take concrete measures to fight the pandemic, while platforms have helped organize vaccination rounds. Nevertheless, they have also be…
Demixing time and temperature influence on porosity and interconnection of PLLA scaffolds prepared via TIPS
2009
Scaffolds suitable for tissue engineering applications were prepared by Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS) starting from a ternary solution PLLA/ dioxane/water. The experimental protocol consisted of three consecutive steps, a first quench from the homogeneous solution to an appropriate demixing temperature (within the binodal region), a liquid-liquid demixing stage for a given time and a final quench from the demixing temperature to a low temperature (within the spinodal region). A large variety of morphologies, in terms of average pore size and interconnection were obtained upon modifying the demixing time and temperature, owing to the interplay of nucleation and growth processes d…
New trends in science education
1996
I intend to review the main contributions from the impressive developments made in science education research during the last decade. These developments have made the construction of a coherent body of knowledge possible allowing us to expect a significant improvement in the science teaching/learning process. I shall refer, in particular, to the new trends in science education research, both in the domain of science learning and science teacher‐training.

Triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and their remnants: metabolic insights, role in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and emerging therapeutic strat…
2021
Abstract Recent advances in human genetics, together with a large body of epidemiologic, preclinical, and clinical trial results, provide strong support for a causal association between triglycerides (TG), TG-rich lipoproteins (TRL), and TRL remnants, and increased risk of myocardial infarction, ischaemic stroke, and aortic valve stenosis. These data also indicate that TRL and their remnants may contribute significantly to residual cardiovascular risk in patients on optimized low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-lowering therapy. This statement critically appraises current understanding of the structure, function, and metabolism of TRL, and their pathophysiological role in atherosclerotic cardiova…
Lipid-lowering therapy use in primary and secondary care in Central and Eastern Europe: DA VINCI observational study.
2021
Abstract Background and aims Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) is a largely understudied region, despite having the highest cardiovascular disease mortality in Europe. This analysis aimed to assess the proportion of patients in CEE who achieved their LDL-C goals based on individual cardiovascular risk recommended by the 2016 and 2019 European Society of Cardiology (ESC)/European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) guidelines. Methods The DA VINCI study was a cross-sectional observational study of primary and secondary prevention patients receiving lipid-lowering therapy across Europe between June 2017 and November 2018. Results In total, 2154 patients were enrolled from the Czech Republic (n = 509…
Wages and prices in early Catalan industrialisation
2014
Catalonia was the only Mediterranean region among the early followers of the British Industrial Revolution in the second third of the nineteenth century. The roots of this industrialisation process can be traced back to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries when the Catalan economy became successfully integrated in international trade and the region enjoyed an intensification of its agrarian and proto-industrial activities. These capitalist developments were subsequently reinforced by a successful printed calico manufacturing business concentrated in the city of Barcelona. Although the factory system was largely adopted by the cotton industry in the 1840s, the diffusion of the spinning j…
