Emotional Information Space in Designing AI Technologies
2022
Current and future AI design needs to recognize the intertwined nature of cognition and affect to design more human-like intelligent systems. The majority of current AI design focuses on cognitive information processes and knowledge. However, human action and human-like actions must also consider the emotional aspects of the environment. We present the concept of emotional information space, which incorporates all issues within a certain environment with cognitively appraised affective meanings and the ability to encode these information contents into designing emotionally intelligent technologies.
Networked Analysis of a Teaching Unit for Primary School Symmetries in the Form of an E-Book
2021
In mathematics education, technology offers many opportunities to enrich curricular contents. Plane symmetries is a topic often skipped by primary teachers. However, it is important and may be worked in attractive ways in dynamic geometry software environments. In any regular classroom there are students with different levels of mathematical attainment, some needing easy tasks while others, particularly mathematically-gifted students, need challenging problems. We present a teaching unit for plane symmetries, adequate for upper primary school grades, implemented in a fully interactive electronic book, with most activities solved in GeoGebra apps. The book allows student to choose which itin…

Comunità e spazio pubblico. Come generare la dimensione spaziale della democrazia
2021
The contribution addresses the issue of the spatial dimension of democracy in the neo-cosmopolitan city, also as an expression of the communities living in it. By highlighting the inequalities still present, which translate into marginality of communities and urban spaces, the contribution claims the importance of public space in the relations between community and city and proposes operational methods through project examples in the city of Palermo.
Wymiar społeczny w projektowaniu zrównoważonego rozwoju miasta
2020
2019
Sociology and history have maintained a discontinuous relationship and a permanent discussion. Classical sociology is intrinsically historical, but after the first theoretical synthesis the dialogue between both disciplines was extinguished and it has often been necessary to defend the need for the historical view in sociology from the margins of the dominant paradigm. However, as a specialty or subdiscipline, historical sociology has consolidated its own academic space and a strong theoretical, methodological and conceptual body. In Spain this process of institutionalization has not yet success. In this article we expose a few arguments in defense of historical sociology, both theoretical …
THE CONCEPT OF COMPETENCE IN THE CONTEXT OF EDUCATION REFORM IN LATVIA
2019
The word competence is a key concept of ongoing education reform in Latvia - the ESF project “Competency approach in the curriculum” (hereafter: Project). The implementation of the idea of competence-based curriculum is related to significant changes in the structure of school and pre-school curriculum, the system of evaluation of learning outcomes, teacher education etc., which are widely clarified and discussed in expert groups and public space. Participating as experts in the development of a Project, the authors of the article find that the Latvian educational space lacks a common understanding of the meaning of the concept competence. Often the pedagogical terminology used by educators…
Applying fully tensorial ICA to fMRI data
2016
There are two aspects in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data that make them awkward to analyse with traditional multivariate methods - high order and high dimension. The first of these refers to the tensorial nature of observations as array-valued elements instead of vectors. Although this can be circumvented by vectorizing the array, doing so simultaneously loses all the structural information in the original observations. The second aspect refers to the high dimensionality along each dimension making the concept of dimension reduction a valuable tool in the processing of fMRI data. Different methods of tensor dimension reduction are currently gaining popUlarity in literature…
Perceptual Anchoring via Conceptual Spaces
2004
Perceptual anchoring is the problem of creating and maintaining in time the connection between symbols and sensor data that refer to the same physical objects. This is one of the facets of the general problem of integrating symbolic and non-symbolic processes in an intelligent system. Gärdenfors’ conceptual spaces provide a geometric treatment of knowledge which bridges the gap between the symbolic and subsymbolic approaches. As such, they can be used for the study of the anchoring problem. In this paper, we propose a computational framework for anchoring based on conceptual spaces. Our framework exploits the geometric structure of conceptual spaces for many of the crucial tasks of anchorin…
A Beggar, Self-Awareness And Willingness To Help
2008
The present field experiment examines the relationship between self-awareness, violation of personal space and helping behavior. A beggar asking for alms on the streets. To induce the first experimental condition, the state of objective self-awareness, the beggar had a mirror at chest height, suspended from a string round his neck. In the control condition, in place of the mirror, the beggar held a similarly dimensioned piece of cardboard in the same position. Both mirror and cardboard bore the message "A FEW PENNIES THANKS." As concerned the second experimental condition, the beggar either stood still waiting for people to come up to him, or walked toward the people as they approached, th…
