The text of the article is an analysis of Gregory of Nazianzus’ comments on Christian perfection. They were selected from his letters written in his family regions after returning from Constantinople, where he occupied for two years the position in the episcopal capital. It was a period of almost ten years of his life, until his death in 390, in which he contacted many people mainly through letters, because weak health prevented him from traveling frequently. The analysis of the letters showed that the threads containing recommendations, warnings, cautions, and encouragements were numerous in them. This paper takes into consideration the interconnections between, food, sexuality and spirituality which constitute the core of Michèle Roberts's novel Impossible Saints. We shall be focusing on the process of cannibalization of women's bodies, considering the term both in a metaphorical and in a literal sense with relation to the stories told in the novel. We shall examine the relationship between Roberts's "new" saints and food and the desecratory, macabre representations that the author offers of the sacred meal.

One of the most significant influences upon the process of creation of male/female spirituality was exerted by role models characteristic for the culture of Counter-Reformation. Among these models, the ones that occupied the most influential position were Miles Christianus and Heroina Christiana shaped in response to domestic and foreign dangers to which the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was exposed.
