Multiservice Optical Fibre Local Area Networks For Data Transmission And Telemetry In The Electric Power Industry

1986

The paper contains a review of a few of experimental optical fibre multiservice and multibranch local area networks /LANs/. Systems accomplish transmission, distribution and processing of analog or digital signals from numerous sources or measurement terminals. The authors put stress also on the possibility of combining transmission properties of fiber optic networks with fibre optic sensors. Several construction problems and chosen properties of multiport /multiterminal/ optical buses /networks/ have been considered. All examination systems of optical fibre LANs are discussed in respect of application them as telemetric, transmission, telesignaling and telecontrol systems for the power ele…

<title>Fiber optical intensity-ratio refractometer with digital display</title>

1994

Simplicity, cost efficiency, and higher fidelity compared to the single-channel design are the main advantages stimulating the recent interest on fiber optic intensity-ratio sensors. Optical and electronic designs of refractometric sensors of this kind are discussed here. Two optical schemes of retroreflective probes with one input and two output fibers are proposed. The probe sensitivity to liquid refractivity changes in the interval 1.33 < n < 1.41 is studied by computer simulation. An originally developed one-ADC-based signal processing circuit providing digital display of the intensity-ratio determined n-values is described as well.

Dynamic railroad inspection using the laser-air hybrid ultrasonic technique

2006

Laser-Air Hybrid Ultrasonic Technique (LAHUT) combines laser generation with air-coupled detection of ultrasound. The technique is non-contact and has the characteristic of operating from remote distances. Acoustic wave laser-generation apparatus can be metres away from the interrogated surface while air-coupled detection standoff can be on the order of several centimetres. The technique has the unique capability of interrogating structural materials in their true industrial environment. Dynamic tests are performed on parts with complex geometry, limited accessibility and curved surfaces. Also, dark and rough finish surfaces, which significantly reduce the efficiency of optical detection te…

Efficiency of Split-Way CVT's. A simplified model

2007

ABSTRACT In this paper, a general formula is obtained for the efficiency of all types of Split-Way CVT, consisting of one or two epicyclic trains, a number of fixed ratio gears and one variable speed unit (CVU). It is based on the application of the principle of virtual works and on the simplifying hypothesis that all the dissipation is lumped inside the CVU. The comparison with some experimental results from the literature shows a surprisingly good fit, also in the neighbourhoods of zero speed ratio. INTRODUCTION The possibility of changing the speed ratio continuously between the primary and the secondary shaft of a mechanical transmission is a very interesting topic, mainly in the automo…

Unique continuation of the normal operator of the x-ray transform and applications in geophysics

2020

We show that the normal operator of the X-ray transform in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq 2$, has a unique continuation property in the class of compactly supported distributions. This immediately implies uniqueness for the X-ray tomography problem with partial data and generalizes some earlier results to higher dimensions. Our proof also gives a unique continuation property for certain Riesz potentials in the space of rapidly decreasing distributions. We present applications to local and global seismology. These include linearized travel time tomography with half-local data and global tomography based on shear wave splitting in a weakly anisotropic elastic medium.

Synthesis, structural characterization and magnetic behaviour of a family of [CoIII2LnIII2] butterfly compounds

2017

We have successfully prepared and structurally characterized a family of butterfly-like [Co2 IIILn2 III] complexes where all magnetic properties are due to the Ln(iii) ions. The complexes with Ln = Tb(1), Dy(2), Ho(3), Er(4) and Yb(5) are iso-structural. An exception is the complex with Ln = Gd(6) which strings in a one dimensional chain. The structural similarity together with the high tendency of the crystallites to align under an applied magnetic field allowed an overall DC magnetic data treatment to extract phenomenological crystal field parameters and hence to determine the ground state multiplet energy level splitting. The Dy(iii) member is the only one showing slow relaxation of magn…

Application of Operator Splitting Methods in Finance

2016

Financial derivatives pricing aims to find the fair value of a financial contract on an underlying asset. Here we consider option pricing in the partial differential equations framework. The contemporary models lead to one-dimensional or multidimensional parabolic problems of the convection-diffusion type and generalizations thereof. An overview of various operator splitting methods is presented for the efficient numerical solution of these problems.

Does Methodology Determine the Identification of Stock Split Motivations?: Evidence from Spain

2006

This study investigates the robustness of the results obtained for the possible motivations for firms listed on the Spanish stock market to execute a stock split using different methodologies. Although surveys from executives emphasize the use of stock splits as a way to increase the liquidity of shares, the empirical evidence is not conclusive. Our results, taken from the logit regression, the Kaplan-Meier method, the Cox regression and the automatic interaction detection, all support the hypotheses of signalling and optimal range.

High-sensitivity narrow-band CSRR-based Microwave Sensor for Monitoring Glucose Level

2022

In this paper, a high-sensitivity narrow-band microwave sensor based on a complementary split-ring resonator (CSRR) to detect glucose concentrations in an aqueous solution is presented. The sensor consists of three CSRR cells engraved on the bottom level of a 59 mm x 20 mm x 0.8 mm FR4 (εr=4.3) dielectric substrate with a sensing area of 36 x 20 mm2. The cells operate over the 2.3 - 2.4 GHz band and are powered by a 50 Ω microstrip waveguide at the bottom of the substrate. A sensitivity analysis, starting from an optimization of the thickness of the glass layer added to the cells to avoid short circuits between the sample solution and the CSRRs rings, is performed. The sensitivity analysis …
