Optimization of a decellularized protocol of porcine tracheas. Long-term effects of cryopreservation. A histological study

2021

[EN] Objective: The aim of this study was to optimize a decellularization protocol in the trachea of Sus scrofa domestica (pig) as well as to study the effects of long-term cryopreservation on the extracellular matrix of decellularized tracheas. Methods: Porcine tracheas were decellularized using Triton X-100, SDC, and SDS alone or in combination. The effect of these detergents on the extracellular matrix characteristics of decellularized porcine tracheas was evaluated at the histological, biomechanical, and biocompatibility level. Morphometric approaches were used to estimate the effect of detergents on the collagen and elastic fibers content as well as on the removal of chondrocytes from …

Prognostic value of the ratio between prothesis area and indexed annulus area measured by multiSlice-CT for transcatheter aortic valve implantation p…

2016

Background Postprocedural aortic regurgitations following transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) procedures remain an is- sue. Benefit of oversizing strategies to prevent them isn’t well established. We compared different level of oversizing in our cohort of con- secutive patients to address if severe oversizing compared to normal sizing had an impact on post-procedural outcomes. Methods From January 2010 to August 2013, consecutive patients were referred for TAVI with preoperative Multislice-CT (MSCT) and the procedures were achieved using Edwards Sapien® or Corevalve devices®. Retrospectively, according to pre-procedural MSCT and the valve size, pa- tients were classified into thr…

Superficial Siderosis of the Central Nervous System associated with Hemophilia A: A case report

2021

Abstract Superficial Siderosis of the Central Nervous System (SSCNS) is a condition secondary to the deposition of hemosiderin within the subpial layers of central nervous system leading to its progressive degeneration, clinically responsible for hearing impairment, cerebellar ataxia and pyramidal syndrome. Here we report the case of a 61-year-old man with medical history of congenital hemophilia A presenting with typical clinical features of SSCNS associated with extensive hypo-intensity on fast 2D gradient-echo-weighted sequences, along the spinal cord, posterior fossa's structures and cerebral cortex. Interestingly, although his disorder was revealed by a lumbar spinal stenosis, presurgi…

Use of decellularized tracheas for airways engineering

2016

Background/Objective: Tracheal stenosis produces serious dyspnea. In some cases, a defective correction or timely intervention can lead to the death of the patient. The Hospital Clinico Universitario de Valencia is a reference hospital for the treatment of patients with airway problems exhibiting complex tracheal stenosis. Surgery is limited to a maximum length of 6-7 cm and it is not exempt of mortality (3-5%). In this study we have study the useful of decellularized porcine tracheas to be used in airway regenerative medicine. Methods: Three porcine tracheas were cut in 3 cm rings and exposed to SDS 2% for up to four weeks. Cell content was evaluated by fluorescence microscopy (DAPI) weekl…

Declining Incidence of Infantile Hypertrophic Stenosis (IHPS) in Germany 2000-2008

2011

Background: The incidencce of infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS) is highly variable over time and regionally different. There have been reports of declining incidence in Sweden, the US, Denmark and Scotland. In Sweden, the decline observed was parallel to the declining incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and was attributed to campaigns against prone sleeping position.

982 Maternal Age, History of Migration and Incidence of Infantile Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis in Germany in 2000-2008

2012

Background The incidence of infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS) is highly variable over time and geographic regions. A decline in IHPS incidence was recently reported in Sweden, the US, Denmark, and Scotland and in Germany. Aim In further evaluation of our previous epidemiological data, we collected data on maternal age and history of migration in mothers from the regional administrations. We examined correlations between these factors and IHPS incidence. Methods Data were extracted from the public report of Health (Gesundheitsberichterstattung des Bundes) and population data from federal state governments. We collected the numbers of IHPS (International Statistical Classificatio…

Left Ventricle Biomechanics of Low-Flow, Low-Gradient Aortic Stenosis: A Patient-Specific Computational Model

2022

This study aimed to create an imaging-derived patient-specific computational model of low-flow, low-gradient (LFLG) aortic stenosis (AS) to obtain biomechanics data about the left ventricle. LFLG AS is now a commonly recognized sub-type of aortic stenosis. There remains much controversy over its management, and investigation into ventricular biomechanics may elucidate pathophysiology and better identify patients for valve replacement. ECG-gated cardiac computed tomography images from a patient with LFLG AS were obtained to provide patient-specific geometry for the computational model. Surfaces of the left atrium, left ventricle (LV), and outflow track were segmented. A previously validated …
