Acute and chronic systemic inflammatory conditions are associated with aortic stiffening. Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV), a marker of aortic stiffness, increases in patients with inflammatory diseases and independently correlates to levels of C-reactive protein (CRP). The effects of massive inflammatory response in early sepsis on mechanical properties of the aorta have not been investigated. The objective of the current study was to prospectively assess aortic stiffness in patients with early severe sepsis and septic shock and relate it to inflammatory and haemodynamic variables and outcome.

An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of two bio-additives as rejuvenators on the properties of asphalt mixtures containing 50% RAP and their binder constituents containing 37% RAP binder. Before mixing, the rejuvenators were blended with fresh bitumen and the extracted and recovered RAP bitumen, and changes in the rheological properties of the binders were assessed using performance grading (PG) criteria. Summary The study concerns the behaviour of steel MR-frames subjected to vertical and lateral forces, not properly designed according to capacity design criteria, and upgraded by means of encasing the steel columns with concrete having different grade.
