Method and analysis in Piero Sraffa's 1925 critique of Marshallian economics
2000
This paper provides an analysis of the logical structure and analytical content of Piero Sraffa's 1925 Italian paper, ‘Sulle relazioni fra costo e quantita prodotta’. It shows that Sraffa's criticism of the supply side of Marshall's theory of value in a competitive partial equilibrium model involves analytical and methodological issues. Endorsing an agressive methodology Sraffa logically reconstructs Marshall's model on variable returns to determine its empirical domain. He demonstrates that the latter encompasses only the empirically irrelevant cases of specific factor industries and specific external economies industries and that it cannot be generalized to non-specific factor industries …
Illuminismo giuridico e idee economiche nelle opere di Cesare Beccaria e di Gaetano Filangieri
2013

Herbert J. Davenport on Conspicuous Consumption and the Economics of Feminism
2019
This article analyzes Herbert J. Davenport’s discussions of conspicuous consumption and feminism. Even though these (typically) Veblenian topics represent two “episodes” in many respects disconnected with the central body of Davenport’s theoretical interests, the assessment of Davenport’s views on these matters enlarges our knowledge of the development of his thought. Our analysis shows how Davenport can be enrolled among the forerunners of the modern theory of positional goods. Moreover, our article offers some new findings on the impact of Veblen’s ideas on one of his closest students at the Chicago University.

Was Frank Knight an institutionalist?
2005
This paper critically examines Geoffrey Hodgson's recent provocative claim about Frank Knight as being a member of American institutionalism in the interwar years. In the first section of the paper the authors attempt to provide a definition of institutionalism and to emphasize its meaning from a historiographic point of view. The second and third sections analyze the two main methodological struggles between Knight and the institutionalists, namely, the debate during the early 1020s over the use of instinct theory as an explanation of economic behavior, and the subsequent campaign led by Knight in the late 1920s and early 1930s against the behaviorist wing of American institutionalism à la…

Le istituzioni, la politica e la legislazione negli articoli de «La Croce di Savoia»
2008
The journal «La Croce di Savoia» has been considered for a long time a source of great interest in the historiography on Francesco Ferrara for the particular historical circumstances in which it was published and for the first-rank role economic ideas had among the contents of its articles. Public finance, commercial policy and custom duties reform are among its most recurring topics, together with a wider range of topics of discussion such as: the institutions, their organization and their functioning; the political action of States and of political parties; the legislation over the judicial organization and over local authorities. The essay focuses on the writings pointing out the economic…
