Sample design and weighting strategies in SHARE Wave 5
2015
This chapter provides a description of the sampling design and weighting strategies adopted in the fifth wave of SHARE. We begin by defining the target population that SHARE aims to represent. Next, we describe the sampling design focusing on the basic principles guiding the construction of the SHARE sample, the role played by sampling frames for coverage of the target population, and other important aspects of sampling - such as stratification, clustering and variation in selection probabilities - that affect the efficiency of sample-based inference. The chapter concludes with a description of the weighting strategies adopted by SHARE to handle problems of unit nonresponse in the baseline …
Discrete Time Portfolio Selection with Lévy Processes
2007
This paper analyzes discrete time portfolio selection models with Lévy processes. We first implement portfolio models under the hypotheses the vector of log-returns follow or a multivariate Variance Gamma model or a Multivariate Normal Inverse Gaussian model or a Brownian Motion. In particular, we propose an ex-ante and an ex-post empirical comparisons by the point of view of different investors. Thus, we compare portfolio strategies considering different term structure scenarios and different distributional assumptions when unlimited short sales are allowed.
Role of Testosterone in Male Sexual Impotent Patients
1985
The role of biological factors contributing to development of sexual dysfunction (SD) has given rise to controversy over many years. Whereas a broad consensus is achieved that schizophrenia and affective psychoses have a biological etiology, such mechanisms receive less acceptance for SD. Conversely, the observation that SD is frequently a concomitant factor in affective illness is subject of current interest in research. For both diseases SD and affective disorder impaired gonadal function is documented (Rubin et al., 1981; Benkert and Holsboer, 1984), whereas both disorders may well occur independantly from each other. In the following section we outline briefly some of the presently avai…
Les apothicaires en Sicile à la fin du Moyen Âge
2018
Between the Fifteenth and Sixteenth centuries, detailed regulations were set to control abuses by apothecaries, to watch over pharmacies, preparations and sales of medicines. There are the sign of a sicilian precocity. But apothecaries, in reality, far from the utopian model proposed by the treaties of the time, seem accustomed to cheat on the quantity and quality. This article aims to reconstruct as complete a picture as possible of the apothecary’s career: its training course based on books but also on apprenticeship in the shop, close to the master, and strategies used to establish within the urban infrastructure.
Silenzi e parole. L'esercizio dell'autoaffermazione femminile in Orgoglio e Pregiudizio
2015
The essay focuses on the main character of Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen, Elizabeth Bennet, who possesses beauty, virtue and intellect and who uses silence, historically intended as a form of gender and social repression imposed by the social system to women, discoursively constructed as an essential component of women's behaviour and social experienced, and aimed at silencing them, as an instrument to path to her auto-assertion. The young woman, through her strategical discoursive skills based both on words but especially on silence tells the story of a heroine who must learn, over the course of her narrative, how to harness the powers of discoursive sophistication in order to circum…
Transizioni in periodi di incertezza. L’innovazione delle politiche regionali di governance per lo sviluppo auto sostenibile
2020
The basis of this contribution are a) the European Commission's regional innovation strategies for smart specialization (RIS3), b) the regional policies to combat the risk of decline and c) the governance model of Transition Management. Today the challenge consists in the validation of RIS3 even in the conditions of uncertainty exacerbated, for example, by the recent experience of COVID 19 as a global pandemic, trigger of the planetary economic and social decline. The guidance of the territorial transformations induced by RIS3 can be achieved with GIS technologies which, in turn, can constitute a single platform of the competent regional administration for urban and landscape planning. This…
Learning strategies explaining differences in reading proficiency. Findings of Nordic and Baltic countries in PISA 2009
2015
Abstract There are useful metacognitive learning strategies improving learning results significantly. Students can be trained to use them to achieve a higher level of proficiency in different academic domains, including reading. The current study was aimed to discover how student awareness and use of learning strategies explains differences in reading literacy test results, using PISA (the Program for International Student Assessment) 2009 data of three Nordic and three Baltic countries. The student level differences appeared partly due to the differences between schools, in the Baltic countries more than in the Nordic countries, which is considered a concern in the countries stating the eq…
Motivational strategies in interventions for intimate partner violence offenders: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled tria…
2020
ABSTRACT Previous research suggests that the inclusion of motivational strategies in interventions for intimate partner violence (IPV) offenders could increase their effectiveness. This review evaluated the effectiveness of interventions for IPV offenders that includes motivational strategies to reduce physical and psychological IPV, treatment dropout, official recidivism to IPV offending, and to increase intervention attendance dose. The present systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted using PRISMA guidelines. The following databases were searched from 1983 to 2018 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of interventions for IPV offenders that incorporated motivational strategies…
L’anxiété de performance dans l’enseignement musical. Une revue de littérature
2022
How might music teachers help their students cope with the anxiety-provoking aspects of public performance? This article aims to provide some elements to answer this question. It is important to consider that public performance is one of the main aspects of musical practice from the start of the learning process. Given the high prevalence of music performance anxiety—MPA among musicians of all levels and ages, the teacher has an important role. Based on a literature review, the sources of MPA are analyzed and, for each of them, strategies that could be used by a music teacher are indicated. Emphasis is placed on prevention and on the importance of raising music teachers’ awareness of MPA.
Community-based Immunization Strategies for Epidemic Control
2014
Understanding the epidemic dynamics, and finding out efficient techniques to control it, is a challenging issue. A lot of research has been done on targeted immunization strategies, exploiting various global network topological properties. However, in practice, information about the global structure of the contact network may not be available. Therefore, immunization strategies that can deal with a limited knowledge of the network structure are required. In this paper, we propose targeted immunization strategies that require information only at the community level. Results of our investigations on the SIR epidemiological model, using a realistic synthetic benchmark with controlled community…
