Early clinical outcomes after small incision lenticule extraction surgery (SMILE)

2018

Abstract Purpose Dry eye is known to impact on clinical outcomes after laser vision correction and the use of a newer ‘all femtosecond laser’ surgical approach may be associated with less impact on the ocular surface post-operatively. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the early clinical outcomes and tear instability after the first small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) cases undertaken by three surgeons at a single site in the UK. Methods Retrospective audit. Seventy-one eyes of 37 patients underwent SMILE surgery using the Zeiss VisuMax laser system (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Germany). Uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity, spherical equivalent refraction, fluorescein en…

Femtosecond laser–assisted intrastromal corneal ring segment implantation for high astigmatism correction after penetrating keratoplasty

2013

PURPOSE: To assess the visual and refractive outcomes of femtosecond laser-assisted implanta- tion of Ferrara-type intrastromal corneal ring segments (ICRS) in post-penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) eyes. SETTING: Instituto OftalmolFernOviedo, Spain. DESIGN: Cohort study. METHODS: Patients with previous PKP had ICRS implantation after femtosecond laser tunnel creation. The uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuities and residual refractive errors were recorded before and 6 months after ICRS implantation. The power vector method was used to analyze refractive errors preoperatively and postoperatively. RESULTS: This study enrolled 32 eyes of 30 patients. The mean UDVA (Snell…

Multilayer amniotic membrane transplantation in severe ocular graft versus host disease

2001

To clarify the usefulness of multilayer amniotic membrane transplantation in an unusual case of calcareous corneal degeneration in a patient with graft-versus-host disease.A 20-year-old Caucasian woman had bilateral calcareous corneal degeneration of one year of evolution, secondary to graft-versus-host disease. Treatment for both eyes with topical steroids and antibiotic ointment was not successful. Right eye had a spontaneous corneal perforation, and a three-layer circle amniotic membrane graft was applied to the whole cornea.During a follow-up period of 20 months we observed stability of the corneal epithelium and stroma. The amniotic membrane-covered area showed rapid epithelization, re…

Femtosecond laser versus mechanical microkeratome laser in situ keratomileusis for myopia: Metaanalysis of randomized controlled trials.

2011

Purpose To examine differences in efficacy, accuracy, safety, and changes in aberrations between femtosecond and mechanical microkeratome laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for myopia. Setting Department of Ophthalmology, Shanghai First People's Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai, China. Design Evidence-based manuscript. Methods Data sources, including PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, and Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, were searched to identify potentially relevant prospective randomized controlled trials. Primary outcome measures were efficacy (uncorrected distance visual acuity ≥20/20), accuracy (±0.50 diopter mean spherical equivalent), and safety (loss of ≥2 l…

Ovarian sex cord tumor with annular tubules in a woman with premature ovarian failure.

2001

Abstract Objective: To report a case of premature ovarian failure (POF) associated with an ovarian sex cord tumor with annular tubules. Design: Case report. Setting: Reproductive endocrinology unit in a tertiary academic center. Patient(s): A 20-year-old woman with POF. Intervention(s): Biopsy of the rudimentary ovary by laparoscopy. Main Outcome Measure(s): Protocol for POF investigation and histological study of the ovarian sample. Result(s): An ovarian sex cord tumor with annular tubules was detected in the rudimentary right ovary. Conclusion(s): The rare ovarian sex cord tumor with annular tubules, which may be hormonally active, was detected in a case of POF.

Peritoneal sarcomatosis 5 years after laparoscopic morcellation of uterine leiomyoma.

2017

In 2011, a 40-year-old woman underwent laparoscopic myomectomy with intraabdominal morcellation. Histology report showed leiomyoma without atypia, necrosis, or mitosis. In 2016, she complained of left lower quadrant pain; ultrasound examination revealed a left hypogastric mass in the site of trocar placement. Percutaneous biopsy results showed a low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (LGESS). At laparoscopy, we observed: multiple nodules on uterine serosa, left annex, vesical peritoneum (Figure 1), Douglas pouch (Supplementary Video1), previous left pelvic trocar site (Figure 2), greater omentum (Figure 3), and right/left diaphragm.

YAP/TAZ activity in stromal cells prevents ageing by controlling cGAS-STING

2022

Ageing is intimately connected to the induction of cell senescence(1,2), but why this is so remains poorly understood. A key challenge isthe identification of pathways that normally suppress senescence, are lost during ageing and are functionally relevant to oppose ageing(3). Here we connected the structural and functional decline of ageing tissues to attenuated function of the master effectors of cellular mechanosignalling YAP and TAZ. YAP/TAZ activity declines during physiological ageing in stromal cells, and mimicking such decline through genetic inactivation of YAP/TAZ in these cells leads to accelerated ageing. Conversely, sustaining YAP function rejuvenates old cells and opposes the e…

Mast cells in allergic asthma and beyond.

2010

Mast cells have been regarded for a long time as effector cells in IgE mediated type I reactions and in host defence against parasites. However, they are resident in all environmental exposed tissues and express a wide variety of receptors, suggesting that these cells can also function as sentinels in innate immune responses. Indeed, studies have demonstrated an important role of mast cells during the induction of life-saving antibacterial responses. Furthermore, recent findings have shown that mast cells promote and modulate the development of adaptive immune responses, making them an important hinge of innate and acquired immunity. In addition, mast cells and several mast cell-produced me…
