Heavy ion induced columnar defects: a sensitive probe for the 2D/3D behaviour of vortex matter in high-temperature superconductors

1998

Abstract Heavy ion irradiation is used to create columnar defects in high-temperature superconductors (HTS). The heavy ion induced defects are not only very well controlled in shape and density, but also in the direction of the tracks with respect to the crystallographic c-axis. Pinning of the flux lines as a function of magnetic field orientation then becomes dependent on vortex dimensionality. The two-dimensional (2D)/three-dimensional (3D) behaviour of flux lines was investigated in the highly anisotropic Bi-based superconducting oxide. Results obtained from transport current measurements with epitaxial films, measurements with small single crystals in flux transformer geometry and muon …

Superconductivity in the Heusler Family of Intermetallics

2012

Several physical properties of the superconducting Heusler compounds, focusing on two systems (Y, Lu, Sc)Pd2Sn and APd2M, where A=Hf, Zr and M=Al, In, are summarized and compared. The analysis of the data shows the importance of the electron-phonon coupling for superconductivity in this family. We report the superconducting parameters of YPd2Sn, which has the highest Tc among all known Heusler superconductors.

Superconductivity with broken time-reversal symmetry inside a superconducting s-wave state

2018

In general, magnetism and superconductivity are antagonistic to each other. However, there are several families of superconductors, in which superconductivity may coexist with magnetism, and only a few examples are known, when superconductivity itself induces spontaneous magnetism. The most known compounds are Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and some noncentrosymmetric superconductors. Here, we report the finding of a narrow dome of a novel $s+is'$ superconducting (SC) phase with broken time-reversal symmetry (BTRS) inside the broad $s$-wave SC region of the centrosymmetric multiband superconductor Ba$_{\rm 1-x}$K$_{\rm x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($0.7 \lesssim x \lesssim 0.85$). We observe spontaneous magnetic fields …

Proximity-induced Josephson-quasiparticle process in a single-electron transistor

1998

We have performed the first experiments in a superconductor - normal metal - superconductor single electron transistor in which there is an extra superconducting strip partially overlapping the normal metal island in good metal-to-metal contact. Superconducting proximity effect gives rise to current peaks at voltages below the quasiparticle threshold. We interpret these peaks in terms of the Josephson-quasiparticle process and discuss their connection with the proximity induced energy gap in the normal metal island.

The quantum phase slip phenomenon in superconducting nanowires with a low-Ohmic environment

2012

In a number of recent experiments it has been demonstrated that in ultra-narrow superconducting channels quantum fluctuations of the order parameter, alternatively called quantum phase slips, are responsible for the finite resistance well below the critical temperature. The acceptable agreement between those experiments and the models describing quantum fluctuations in quasi-one-dimensional superconductors has been established. However the very concept of the phase slip is justified when these fluctuations are the relatively rare events, meaning that the effective resistance of the system should be much smaller than the normal state equivalent. In this paper we study the limit of the strong…

Spin–orbit coupling effects on the electronic properties of the pressure-induced superconductor CrAs

2019

We present the effects of spin-orbit coupling on the low-energy bands and Fermi surface of the recently discovered pressure-induced superconductor CrAs. We apply the L\"owdin down-folding procedure to a tight-binding hamiltonian that includes the intrinsic spin-orbit interaction, originating from the Cr 3d electrons as well as from As 4p ones. Our results indicate that As contributions have negligible effects, whereas the modifications to the band structure and the Fermi surface can be mainly ascribed to the Cr contribution. We show that the inclusion of the spin-orbit interaction allows for a selective removal of the band degeneracy due to the crystal symmetries, along specific high symmet…

Time evolution of the microwave second-harmonic response of MgB2 superconductor

2003

We report on transient effects in the microwave second-order response of two ceramic MgB2 samples. The time evolution of the second-harmonic signal is investigated for about 500 s after the sample has been exposed to a variation of the dc magnetic field. We suggest that during the first seconds the response is determined by diffusive motion of fluxons, while in the time scale of minutes it is ruled by magnetic relaxation over the surface barrier.

Force-free state in a superconducting single crystal and angle-dependent vortex helical instability

2017

Superconducting 2H-NbSe2 single crystals show intrinsic low pinning values. Therefore, they are ideal materials with which to explore fundamental properties of vortices. (V, I) characteristics are the experimental data we have used to investigate the dissipation mechanisms in a rectangular shape 2H-NbSe2 single crystal. Particularly, we have studied dissipation behavior with magnetic fields applied in the plane of the crystal and parallel to the injected currents, i.e. in the force-free state where the vortex helical instability governs the vortex dynamics. In this regime, the data follow the elliptic critical state model and the voltage dissipation shows an exponential dependence. Moreover,…

Change of the vortex core structure in two-band superconductors at the impurity-scattering-driven s±/s++ crossover

2017

We report a nontrivial transition in the core structure of vortices in two-band superconductors as a function of interband impurity scattering. We demonstrate that, in addition to singular zeros of the order parameter, the vortices there can acquire a circular nodal line around the singular point in one of the superconducting components. It results in the formation of the peculiar ``moat''-like profile in one of the superconducting gaps. The moat-core vortices occur generically in the vicinity of the impurity-induced crossover between ${s}_{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$ and ${s}_{++}$ states.

Flat Bands as a Route to High-Temperature Superconductivity in Graphite

2016

Superconductivity is traditionally viewed as a low-temperature phenomenon. Within the BCS theory this is understood to result from the fact that the pairing of electrons takes place only close to the usually two-dimensional Fermi surface residing at a finite chemical potential. Because of this, the critical temperature is exponentially suppressed compared to the microscopic energy scales. On the other hand, pairing electrons around a dispersionless (flat) energy band leads to very strong superconductivity, with a mean-field critical temperature linearly proportional to the microscopic coupling constant. The prize to be paid is that flat bands can probably be generated only on surfaces and i…
