α-d-Glucopyranose Adsorption on a Pd30 Cluster Supported on Boron Nitride Nanotube

2016

Boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) as an innovative support for carbohydrate transformation processes was evaluated, using density functional theory. The α-d-glucopyranose adsorption on a Pd30 cluster, supported on BNNT, was used to check both the local activity of topologically different metallic sites and the effects of the proximity of the BNNT surface to the same metallic sites. Detailed geometrical and electronic analyses performed on Pd30/BNNT and α-d-glucopyranose/Pd30/BNNT systems were discussed. It was observed that the deposition of the Pd30 cluster onto the BNNT support gives rise to an electronic rearrangement, determining a charge transfer from the support to the adsorbed metal clus…

Thermal Flux through a Surface of n-Octane. A Non-equilibrium Molecular Dynamics Study

2004

We show using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics that there is local equilibrium in the surface when a two-phase fluid of n-octane is exposed to a large temperature gradient (10 8 K/m). The surface is defined according to Gibbs, and the transport across the surface is described with non-equilibrium thermodynamics. The structure of the surface in the presence of the gradient is the same as if the interface was in equilibrium, as measured by the variation across the surface of the pressure component that is parallel to the surface. The surface is in local equilibrium by this criterion and because the equation of state for the surface was unaltered by a large heat flux. The surface has a small…

A mesoscopic mechanical model of the surface tension and some simulation results

2019

Abstract Drops of mercury do not spread on a surface. A metal paper clip can float on water. These phenomena are macroscopic manifestations of molecular interactions and can be explained in terms of surface tension. In this study, we discuss a simple mesoscopic mechanical model of the surface tension and the results of numerical fluid dynamics simulations implemented on the basis of it. We study the droplet formation without and with gravity when it can drop from a narrow hole like a trickling tap and finally the behaviour of free surface liquid in a vessel. Teachers and students can be able to study the surface tension by using the computer simulation as a “tool” for analysing and discussi…

Liquid metal free surface dynamics in rotating permanent magnet stirrer

2020

Abstract We study liquid metal stirring by rotating permanent magnets in a laboratory-scale rectangular glass container. The main goal is numerical model validation using experimental free surface shape data. We find reasonable agreement between the experiments and coupled liquid metal magnetohydrodynamics simulations. Since the surface tension forces are not dominant here, free surface is deformed mainly by the dynamic pressure of the bulk flow. Therefore, we can conclude that not only the free surface profile is similar to experiments, but the bulk flow must be also very similar.

Computer simulations to approach surface tension by means of a simple mesoscopic mechanical model

2019

A small insect can stand or walk on water surface, drops of mercury do not spread on a solid surface, and a meniscus is formed at the free surface of a liquid contained in a thin vessel. These phenomena can be seen as macroscopic manifestations of molecular interactions and can be explained macroscopically in terms of surface tension. In this study, we deal with an approach to surface tension from a mechanical point of view, presenting a simple mesoscopic mechanical model of surface tension and the results of its implementation in numerical fluid dynamics simulations. Particularly, phenomena like droplet formation without gravity and with gravity when it can drop from a narrow hole like a t…

New solutions of preparation and activation of surfaces

2017

Organic coatings applied on the surface of cast iron pipes ensure very good chemical and anti-corrosion protection against aggressive effluents. To improve adherence between coating (epoxy) and substrate, a surface preparation is required. Among conventional processes shot blasting has emerged as the most efficient and cheapest solution for ensuring stripping while generating adapted roughness. However, as it may enhance both mechanical anchorage and chemical bonding a better understanding of these phenomena should be developed. Besides new eco-friendly alternatives were investigated.Indeed, new techniques were evaluated, i.e. laser structuring and an ultra-high pressure water jet whose maj…

Evidence for a multistep mechanism for cell-cell fusion by herpes simplex virus with mutations in the syn 3 locus using heparin derivatives during fu…

1994

Addition of heparin-Na+ as well as related substances of high and intermediate MW (Arteparon and polyanion SP54) 3 h after infection inhibit fusion from within (FFWI) induced by HSV strains with mutations in the syn 3 locus only. The concentration of heparin-Na+ required to inhibit FFWI is 10-fold higher (1 mg/ml) than that needed to inhibit adsorption. Instead of fusion, cell rounding is observed. The effect is readily reversible. A low MW heparin disaccharide is ineffective. Neomycin, at a concentration of 8 mM, inhibits FFWI induced by all HSV-1 but not HSV-2 strains, whereas adsorption is inhibited at 3 mM. We conclude from our observations that cell-cell fusion (FFWI) induced by syn 3 …

Power sensitivity analysis of multi-frequency, multi-polarized, multi-temporal SAR data for soil-vegetation system variables characterization

2017

Abstract: The knowledge of spatial and temporal variability of soil water content and others soil-vegetation variables (leaf area index, fractional cover) assumes high importance in crop management. Where and when the cloudiness limits the use of optical and thermal remote sensing techniques, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery has proven to have several advantages (cloud penetration, day/night acquisitions and high spatial resolution). However, measured backscattering is controlled by several factors including SAR configuration (acquisition geometry, frequency and polarization), and target dielectric and geometric properties. Thus, uncertainties arise about the more suitable configurati…

Monitoring Water Surface and Level of a Reservoir Using Different Remote Sensing Approaches and Comparison with Dam Displacements Evaluated via GNSS

2018

Remote sensing allowed monitoring the reservoir water level by estimating its surface extension. Surface extension has been estimated using different approaches, employing both optical (Landsat 5 TM, Landsat 7 ETM+ SLC-Off, Landsat 8 OLI-TIRS and ASTER images) and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images (Cosmo SkyMed and TerraSAR-X). Images were characterized by different acquisition modes, geometric and spectral resolutions, allowing the evaluation of alternative and/or complementary techniques. For each kind of image, two techniques have been tested: The first based on an unsupervised classification and suitable to automate the process, the second based on visual matching with contour lines…
