Robotic path planning for non-destructive testing of complex shaped surfaces

The requirement to increase inspection speeds for non-destructive testing (NDT) of composite aerospace parts is common to many manufacturers. The prevalence of complex curved surfaces in the industry provides significant motivation for the use of 6 axis robots for deployment of NDT probes in these inspections. A new system for robot deployed ultrasonic inspection of composite aerospace components is presented. Optimization of the contact surface shape of a shrinkage fit

Amongst many processes existing today for the assembly of two cylindrical parts, the shrinkage fit is commonly used. However, in the calculation methods, the contact surfaces are assumed to be perfect. Therefore, in order to apply these, the standards necessitate very small geometrical tolerances. The objective of the present paper is to show that it is possible to take into account form defects by closely conformed contact modelling and to have a good representation of reality: form defects always exist to an increasing extent and are inherent in all kinds of manufacturing processes. A microbiological environmental investigation was carried out in ten dental clinics in Italy. Microbial contamination of water, air and surfaces was assessed in each clinic during the five working days, for one week per month, for a three-month period. Water and surfaces were sampled before and after clinical activity; air was sampled before, after, and during clinical activity. A wide variation was found in microbial environmental contamination, both within the participating clinics and for the different sampling times. Electrical characterization of deoxyribonucleic acid hybridization in metal-oxide-semiconductor-like structures

In this work, metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS)-like sensors in which deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) strands are covalently immobilized either on Si oxide or on a gold surface were electrically characterized. Si oxide fabrication process allowed us to have a surface insensitive to the solution pH. A significant shift in the flat band voltage was measured after single strand DNA immobilization (+0.47 +/- 0.04 V) and after the complementary strand binding (+0.07 +/- 0.02 V). The results show that DNA sensing can be performed using a MOS structure which can be easily integrated in a more complex design, thus avoiding the problems related to the integration of micro-electrochemical cells.

A First-Principles Study of the Ag/a-Al2O3(0001) Interface

Ab initio simulations of the Ag/a-Al2O3(0001) interface have been performed for periodic slab models. We have considered Al- and O-terminated corundum surfaces, low and high substrate coverages by silver, as well as the two preferred Ag adsorption sites. The two different terminations give rise to qualitatively different results: silver physisorption on the Al-terminated substrate and chemisorption on O-terminated one.
