An associative link from geometric to symbolic representations in artificial vision
1991
Recent approaches to modelling the reference of internal symbolic representations of intelligent systems suggest to consider a computational level of a subsymbolic kind. In this paper the integration between symbolic and subsymbolic processing is approached in the framework of the research work currently carried on by the authors in the field of artificial vision. An associative mapping mechanism is defined in order to relate the constructs of the symbolic representation to a geometric model of the observed scene.
Balance as Symbol and Object of Art
2014
The symbolic use of the balance is reviewed, covering mythology and religion, icons and arts, its use in astronomy and astrology as well as in literature and music. In Old Egypt many paintings show men’s height balances symbolically used for soul weighing. In Greece the fate balance was known. In the Roman Empire the symbolic use changed to justice fairness, and legitimacy of coins and this holds until modern time. In the Bible and the Koran fair weighing in trade are demanded. In the Book of Revelation the balance is symbol for misery. Michael archangel became guide of the deceased to the last judgement and weighed the poor sinner against his good deeds. In the witch balance the mass of th…
Singular solutions to p-Laplacian type equations
1999
We construct singular solutions to equations $div\mathcal{A}(x,\nabla u) = 0,$ similar to the p-Laplacian, that tend to ∞ on a given closed set of p-capacity zero. Moreover, we show that every Gδ-set of vanishing p-capacity is the infinity set of some A-superharmonic function.
Panel Summary: Symbolism and Connectionism Paradigms
1999
The aim of this chapter is to report the panel discussion on symbolism and connectionism paradigms. In particular, the following hot point are analysed: what cognitive phenomena are most difficult for connectionists to explain? what cognitive phenomena are most naturally explained in connectionist terms? is symbolic deduction a central kind of human thinking? How do people make deductions? is nondeductive reasoning done in accord with the laws of probability? what areas of knowledge do you have that are easily described in terms of symbolic rules? concepts reduced to rules, concepts reduced to networks; symbolic and connectionist mechanisms of analogy; planning, decision, explanation, learn…
The Cauchy problem for linear growth functionals
2003
In this paper we are interested in the Cauchy problem $$ \left\{ \begin{gathered} \frac{{\partial u}}{{\partial t}} = div a (x, Du) in Q = (0,\infty ) x {\mathbb{R}^{{N }}} \hfill \\ u (0,x) = {u_{0}}(x) in x \in {\mathbb{R}^{N}}, \hfill \\ \end{gathered} \right. $$ (1.1) where \( {u_{0}} \in L_{{loc}}^{1}({\mathbb{R}^{N}}) \) and \( a(x,\xi ) = {\nabla _{\xi }}f(x,\xi ),f:{\mathbb{R}^{N}}x {\mathbb{R}^{N}} \to \mathbb{R} \)being a function with linear growth as ‖ξ‖ satisfying some additional assumptions we shall precise below. An example of function f(x, ξ) covered by our results is the nonparametric area integrand \( f(x,\xi ) = \sqrt {{1 + {{\left\| \xi \right\|}^{2}}}} \); in this case …
A Characterization of Bispecial Sturmian Words
2012
A finite Sturmian word w over the alphabet {a,b} is left special (resp. right special) if aw and bw (resp. wa and wb) are both Sturmian words. A bispecial Sturmian word is a Sturmian word that is both left and right special. We show as a main result that bispecial Sturmian words are exactly the maximal internal factors of Christoffel words, that are words coding the digital approximations of segments in the Euclidean plane. This result is an extension of the known relation between central words and primitive Christoffel words. Our characterization allows us to give an enumerative formula for bispecial Sturmian words. We also investigate the minimal forbidden words for the set of Sturmian wo…
A longitudinal examination of the transition to symbolic communication in the second year of life
2003
Between 10 and 24 months of age, children progress from communicating through conventional signals to communicating through symbols in a variety of situations. The present study investigates this transition analysing mother–child communication frames and the child’s communicative acts, and tracing the developmental changes in both frames and communicative acts. Four children (2 girls, 2 boys) and their mothers were observed longitudinally and extensively, from 10 to 24 months of age, using a multiple case-study method. Through the detailed investigation of these single cases, clear developmental trajectories were found, showing that conventional frames and representational gestures ‘bridge’…
On finite element approximation of the gradient for solution of Poisson equation
1981
A nonconforming mixed finite element method is presented for approximation of ?w with Δw=f,w| r =0. Convergence of the order $$\left\| {\nabla w - u_h } \right\|_{0,\Omega } = \mathcal{O}(h^2 )$$ is proved, when linear finite elements are used. Only the standard regularity assumption on triangulations is needed.
