Tracing the indexicalization of the notion "Helsinki s"

AbstractEarlier research has concluded that there is a strong symbolic relationship between Helsinki as a place and non-standard /s/ pronunciation. This phenomenon is likewise in continuous evidence in the Finnish media and social media. The notion of “Helsinki s” has become a folk linguistic fact although it lacks a clear linguistic correlate or even status as a linguistic fact. The only sibilant of the Finnish language is officially a voiceless alveolar, while the “Helsinki s” is most often discussed as “hissing”, “sharp” or “fronted”. The recent discovery of mirror neurons has rivived the gestural-imitative theory of the origin of language advocated by Condillac in the XVIIIth century. Condillac develops this theory in two stages: in the Essai (1746) he proposes a gestural theory based on the arbitrariness of the sign, while in the Grammaire (1775) he refuses arbitrariness and accepts the theory of analogy and natural imitation proposed by Charles de Brosses (1765). The Sicilian religious festivals present a rich and varied plant symbolism. In addition to the widespread practice of decorating processional statues with flowers, fruits, ears of wheat, green beans depending on the season and the phases of the agricultural cycles, the use of carrying processionally simple branches of laurel or more complex plant artifacts is widely observed. La presencia de un conjunto significativo de fusayolas entre los ajuares de la necrópolis de la Edad del Hierro de Olival do Senhor dos Mártires (Alcácer do Sal, Portugal) plantea cuestiones de gran interés sobre los límites entre la función de estos elementos y su significado simbólico y escatológico. En este estudio se abordan esas cuestiones, analizando por un lado las características físicas, tecnológicas y morfológicas de las piezas, y por otro los posibles códigos simbólicos y religiosos que las convierten en elementos integrales del ajuar funerario en distintas comunidades del sur peninsular.

Il figure en effet pour la première fois dans le Cratyle de Platon (439a), point de départ de cette tradition. International audience; This is the first of a two-part paper in which I would like to propose some possible hypotheses on the early origins of symbolic function, which is the most typical feature of human being, based on disavowal mechanism. Briefly recalling the main stages of the history of symbolism, it will be possible to lay out many of its theories within the framework that we wish to outline with this work, this first part of which is mainly concerned with the basic psychodynamic notion of disavowal and its possible applications, above all in regard to fetishism.
