Kernel Based Symmetry Measure

2005

In this paper we concentrate on a measure of symmetry. Given a transform S, the kernel SK of a pattern is defined as the maximal included symmetric sub-set of this pattern. A first algorithm is outlined to exhibit this kernel. The maximum being taken over all directions, the problem arises to know which center to use. Then the optimal direction triggers the shift problem too. As for the measure we propose to compute a modified difference between respective surfaces of a pattern and its kernel. A series of experiments supports actual algorithm validation.

Supersymmetric Indices of 3d S-fold SCFTs

2019

Enhancement of global symmetry and supersymmetry in the infrared is one of the most intriguing phenomena in quantum field theory. We investigate such phenomena in a large class of three dimensional superconformal field theories, known as the S-fold SCFTs. Supersymmetric indices are computed for a number of theories containing small rank gauge groups. It is found that indices of several models exhibit enhancement of supersymmetry at the superconformal fixed point in the infrared. Dualities between S-fold theories that have different quiver descriptions are also analysed. We explore a new class of theories with a discrete global symmetry, whose gauge symmetry in the quiver has a different glo…

Supersymmetric SO(10)-inspired GUTs with sliding scales

2013

We construct lists of supersymmetric models with extended gauge groups at intermediate steps, all of which are inspired by SO(10) unification. We consider three different kinds of setups: (i) the model has exactly one additional intermediate scale with a left-right (LR) symmetric group; (ii) SO(10) is broken to the LR group via an intermediate Pati-Salam scale; and (iii) the LR group is broken into SU(3)(c) X SU(2)(L) X U(1)(R) X U(1)(B-L), before breaking to the standard model (SM) group. We use sets of conditions, which we call the "sliding mechanism," which yield unification with the extended gauge group(s) allowed at arbitrary intermediate energy scales. All models thus can have new gau…

Robust, Highly Luminescent Au13 Superatoms Protected by N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

2019

Gold superatom nanoclusters stabilized entirely by N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and halides are reported. The reduction of well-defined NHC–Au–Cl complexes produces clusters comprised of an icosahedral Au13 core surrounded by a symmetrical arrangement of nine NHCs and three chlorides. X-ray crystallography shows that the clusters are characterized by multiple CH−π and π–π interactions, which rigidify the ligand and likely contribute to the exceptionally high photoluminescent quantum yields observed, up to 16.0%, which is significantly greater than that of the most luminescent ligand-protected Au13 superatom cluster. Density functional theory analysis suggests that clusters are 8-electron …

Photoionization of adsorbates on sites with non-axial local symmetry. An example of the symmetry group

1996

We present an analysis of the influence of the local adsorption site symmetry on the angular distribution of photoelectrons ejected from adsorbed atoms or molecules. This analysis applies to photoelectron spectra obtained with photons of any energy in the VUV (photoelectron spectroscopy) or x-ray (XPS) regions, provided that the associated wave of the electron `sees' the neighbouring surface atoms. The adsorbate - substrate system is modelled by a cluster of symmetry group consisting of an adsorbate and several atoms of the substrate. The analysis applies also to clean surfaces of symmetry and to molecules of the symmetry group fixed in space. This local symmetry analysis is an alternative …

Self-assembly of a M4L6 complex with unexpected S4 symmetry

2014

Using 1,4-diaminobenzene and 2-formylpyridine as simple building blocks results in a 1D ligand (rod, L2) to 2D (M4L4 grid, C1) to 3D (S4 symmetrical M4L6, C2) complexes upon sequential addition of Cu(I) and Fe(II) ions. The complex C2 can be seen as the smallest possible pseudo-tetrahedron with S4 symmetry. peerReviewed

A new general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics code for dynamical spacetimes

2008

We present a new numerical code which solves the general relativistic magneto-hydrodynamics (GRMHD) equations coupled to the Einstein equations for the evolution of a dynamical spacetime within the conformally-flat approximation. This code has been developed with the main objective of studying astrophysical scenarios in which both, high magnetic fields and strong gravitational fields appear, such as the magneto-rotational collapse of stellar cores, the collapsar model of GRBs, and the evolution of neutron stars. The code is based on an existing and thoroughly tested purely hydrodynamics code and on its extension to accommodate weakly magnetized fluids (passive magnetic field approximation).…

General relativistic simulations of pasive-magneto-rotational core collapse with microphysics

2007

This paper presents results from axisymmetric simulations of magneto-rotational stellar core collapse to neutron stars in general relativity using the passive field approximation for the magnetic field. These simulations are performed using a new general relativistic numerical code specifically designed to study this astrophysical scenario. The code is based on the conformally-flat approximation of Einstein's field equations and conservative formulations of the magneto-hydrodynamics equations. The code has been recently upgraded to incorporate a tabulated, microphysical equation of state and an approximate deleptonization scheme. This allows us to perform the most realistic simulations of m…

Socioeconomic position, immune function, and its physiological markers

2021

Abstract The development of costly traits such as immune function and secondary sexual traits is constrained by resource availability. The quality of developmental conditions and the availability of resources in ontogeny may therefore influence immune system functions and other biological traits. We analyzed causal pathways between family socioeconomic position, strength of immune response, and five physiological biomarkers in young Latvian men (n = 93) using structural equation modeling. Men from wealthier families had higher testosterone levels (rs = 0.280), stronger immune response (rs = 0.551), and higher facial attractiveness (rs = 0.300). There were weak, non-significant correlations …

Titchener's T in context 2 - Symmetric patterns of two Ts.

2019

Abstract Patterns of two Ts, materializing different symmetry groups, were used to explore conditions that would lead to a modulation of the typically observed overestimation of the length of a T's undivided line relative to its divided line. Observers either had to compare the lengths of the lines of one or the other of the Ts in a pattern, or noncorresponding lines between the two Ts. For both tasks alike, the T-illusion was found to be markedly greater with twofold mirror-symmetric 2-T patterns than it usually is with individual Ts. A control experiment suggested that the effect was probably due to the collinearity of the two Ts' undivided lines in these patterns rather than the addition…
