Correlation between in situ structural and optical characterization of the semiconductor-to-metal phase transition of VO2 thin films on sapphire

2020

A detailed structural investigation of the semiconductor-to-metal transition (SMT) in vanadium dioxide thin films deposited on sapphire substrates by pulsed laser deposition was performed by in situ temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The structural results are correlated with those of infrared radiometry measurements in the SWIR (2.5-5 μm) and LWIR (8-10.6 μm) spectral ranges. The main results indicate a good agreement between XRD and optical analysis, therefore demonstrating that the structural transition from monoclinic to tetragonal phases is the dominating mechanism for controlling the global properties of the SMT transition. The picture that emerges is a SMT tr…

A Simple Approach for Determination of Numerical Values of Ferrite Nonlinear Susceptibilities

2020

This article presents a straightforward approach for determination of numerical values of nonlinear susceptibilities of soft magnetic ferrites. It is shown that numerical values of susceptibilities can be calculated from the measured amplitudes of harmonics in the output voltage of ferrite core transformer. For this purpose, useful expressions for the susceptibilities are derived and as example, numerical values of the largest nonlinear susceptibilities those of the third and fifth orders are calculated. Additionally, errors of the measured susceptibilities also are determined. Based on the expressions obtained, the analysis of phase shifts between components of flux density on different fr…

On asymmetric periodic solutions in relay feedback systems

2021

Abstract Asymmetric self-excited periodic motions or periodic solutions which are produced by relay feedback systems that have symmetric characteristics are studied in the paper. Two different mechanisms of producing an asymmetric oscillation by a system with symmetric properties are noted and analyzed by the locus of a perturbed relay system (LPRS) method. Bifurcation between the ability to excite symmetric and asymmetric oscillation with variation of system parameters is analyzed. An algorithm of finding asymmetric solutions is proposed.

Numerical values of MnZn ferrite nonlinear susceptibilities in a lossless approximation

2017

On the basis of expressions for nonlinear magnetic susceptibilities of soft ferrites obtained earlier the analysis of phase shifts between components of flux density on different frequencies and the magnetic field strength is carried out. Only the largest nonlinear susceptibilities those of third and fifth order are considered. It is shown that in the frequency range where losses are small and can be neglected the susceptibility of third order is negative but that of fifth order is positive. These statements allow explaining the shape of output voltage of toroidal transformer with soft ferrite core induced by strong harmonic field strength in the input. Numerical values of nonlinear suscept…

Magnetic properties of exciton trapped by an off-center ionized donor in single quantum dot

2021

Abstract It is known that the lines of exciton (X) and exciton trapped by an ionized donor ( D + , X ) are often very close which makes very difficult their experimental identification. In order to facilitate their distinction in spherical quantum dots, we investigate the effect of an applied magnetic field studying the binding energy of the complex ( D + , X ) as function of dot size and the ionized donor position. Our calculation is using a variational approach taking into account the interactions between all charge carriers. Our results show that the complex is more sensitive to the magnetic field than the exciton and that the energy of the exciton is not sufficiently affected when the i…

The Role of Right Interpretation of Space Charge Distribution for Optimized Design of HVDC Cables

2019

In the field of high-voltage transmission systems, different degradation phenomena affect the reliability of the employed components. In particular, under dc stress, the space charge accumulation phenomenon is believed to be the most responsible of the dielectrics lifetime reduction. To measure the accumulated space charges in flat specimens, the pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) method is one of the most used techniques. The working principle of the PEA cell is based on the acoustic waves propagation and detection. As is well known, the acoustic waves propagating in different means are partially transmitted and partially reflected. Therefore, the piezoelectric sensor of the PEA cell is subject…

Commissioning of the vacuum system of the KATRIN Main Spectrometer

2016

The KATRIN experiment will probe the neutrino mass by measuring the β-electron energy spectrum near the endpoint of tritium β-decay. An integral energy analysis will be performed by an electro-static spectrometer (``Main Spectrometer''), an ultra-high vacuum vessel with a length of 23.2 m, a volume of 1240 m[superscript 3], and a complex inner electrode system with about 120 000 individual parts. The strong magnetic field that guides the β-electrons is provided by super-conducting solenoids at both ends of the spectrometer. Its influence on turbo-molecular pumps and vacuum gauges had to be considered. A system consisting of 6 turbo-molecular pumps and 3 km of non-evaporable getter strips ha…

Temperature Coefficients of Solar Cell Parameters at Maximum Power Point

2020

Analytical expressions for the temperature coefficients of the maximum power point voltage and current are presented. The temperature coefficients are calculated assuming the bandgap to be a linear function of the temperature and accounting for energy losses of non-radiative nature. The latter are introduced in the model through the External Radiative Efficiency. The so-called $\gamma$ parameter, which has been shown to account for the thermal sensitivity of all mechanisms determining the open-circuit voltage, appears to also play a role in the temperature coefficient of the maximum power point voltage and current. Numerical results and a comparison with experimental measurements are also p…

Description of intermodulation generation of nonlinear responses beyond the validity of the power series expansion

2021

Weakly nonlinear responses are commonly described by a power series expansion. However, intermodulation distortion products that cannot be described by a power series have been observed in a variety of physical systems. As the power series description is only applicable within its radius of convergence, we choose an alternative approach based on Fourier coefficients to describe intermodulation levels beyond the convergence of the power series. The description over a wide power range allows us to make a decision about models and to determine previously inaccessible model parameters. We apply the approach to data obtained from the characterization of the nonlinear dielectric susceptibility of…

Analytic $JV$ -Characteristics of Ideal Intermediate Band Solar Cells and Solar Cells With Up and Downconverters

2017

The ideal diode equation is regularly used to describe the $\textit {JV}$ -characteristic of single junction solar cells. The connection between the diode equation and fundamental physics is the application of the Boltzmann approximation to describe the fluxes of photons emitted by the cell. In this paper, this approximation is used to derive analytic $\textit {JV}$ -characteristics for three photovoltaic high-efficiency concepts, intermediate band solar cells, and solar cells optically coupled to up and downconverters. These three concepts share the common feature that they allow excitation of electrons between at least three energy levels, which assures a better utilization of the solar s…
