Curative endoscopic resection of early esophageal adenocarcinomas (Barrett's cancer).

2005

Background In view of the increasing incidence of adenocarcinoma in Barrett's esophagus and the mortality and high morbidity rates associated with surgical therapy for this condition, safe and effective but less invasive methods of treatment are needed. Objective To evaluate efficacy and safety of endoscopic resection in these patients. Design Single-center prospective study. Setting Teaching hospital, conducted between October 1996 and September 2003. Patients A total of 100 consecutive patients (mean age, 62.1 ± 10.9 years; range, 31–86 years) with low-risk adenocarcinoma of the esophagus (macroscopic types I, IIa, IIb, and IIc; lesion diameter up to 20 mm; mucosal lesion without invasion…

Preoperative radiochemotherapy and radical surgery in comparison with radical surgery alone. A prospective, multicentric, randomized DÖSAK study of a…

1994

Abstract A multicentric, randomized study of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oral cavity and the oropharynx has been undertaken by DOSAK. The results after radical surgery alone have been compared with the results of combined preoperative radiochemotherapy followed by radical surgery. Patients with primary (biopsy proven) SCC of the oral cavity or the oropharynx with tumor nodes metastasis (TNM) stages T2–4, N0–3, M0 were included in the study. A total of 141 patients were treated by radical surgery alone, whereas 127 patients were treated by radical surgery preceded by preoperative radiochemotherapy. The preoperative treatment consisted of conventionally fractioned irradiation on the …

Structure of the FeBTC Metal–Organic Framework: A Model Based on the Local Environment Study

2015

The local environment of iron in FeBTC, a metal organic framework commercially known as Basolite F300, is investigated combining XANES and EXAFS studies of the iron K-edge. The building block of the FeBTC can be described as an iron acetate moiety. Dehydration induces a change in the coordination of the first shell while preserving the network. We propose that the local structure around Fe atoms does not undergo a rearrangement, thus, leading to the formation of an open site. The analysis conveys that the FeBTC is a disordered network of locally ordered blocks.

On the impact of linking groups in hydrogen-bonded liquid crystals – a case study

2018

The impact of the linking group in hydrogen-bonded liquid crystals is systematically studied by a modular approach. POM and DSC results exhibited tremendous differences in the mesomorphic behaviour of the assemblies, due to the versatile linkages of the side chains, which were correlated with structural features and the elctronical nature of the side chains.

Two-Dimensional Melting Approached via Finite-Size Scaling of Bond-Orientational Order

1994

Relying on Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the hard-disk melting transition. The finite-size scaled values of the bond-orientational order parameter moments are obtained with the block analysis technique. The behaviour of Binder's cumulant and the susceptibility favour an interpretation in terms of a first-order transition.

Structural study, thermal expansion and electrical conductivity of the composition NaSnZr(PO4)3

1993

Abstract The structure of the composition NaSnZr(PO4)3 and its evolution with temperature has been studied. The structure presents the space group R 3 c. The refinement of the structure shows that the Sn and Zr atoms are statistically distributed over the same crystallographic position. The unit cell expands in the c direction and contracts in the a direction, remaining the space group R 3 c at temperatures between 26 and 1000°C. The low value of the electrical conductivity at 400°C, 5.729×10−7S/cm and the low density of the pellets limited the use as electrical conductor.

Adsorption Active Diblock Copolymers as Universal Agents for Unusual Barrier-Free Transitions in Stimuli-Responsive Brushes

2021

We reconsider a recently proposed design for smart responsive brushes, which is based on a conformational transition in very dilutely embedded block copolymers with a surface active block (Qi et al., Macromolecules 53, 5326, 2020). Under certain conditions, the transition acquires an unusual character: it remains very sharp, but the barrier separating the adsorbed and desorbed states disappears completely. We show that these features are very robust with respect to changing almost all system parameters: the lengths of the inert and active blocks of the minority chain, the brush length, its density, and its polydispersity. The only relevant condition is that the inert block of the minority c…

Evaluation of the effect of three innovative recyling methods on the shear bond strength of stainless steel brackets-an in vitro study

2016

Background Orthodontists are commonly faced with the decision of what to do with debonded or inaccurately positioned brackets. An economical option to this dilemma is to recycle the brackets. Many recycling methods have been proposed, but the optimal bond strength of these recycled brackets needs further evaluation. Objectives: To evaluate and compare the effect of three recycling methods: (i) Sandblasting (ii) Sandblasting / direct flaming (iii) Sandblasting /direct flaming /acid bath solution on shear bond strength (SBS) of stainless steel brackets. Material and Methods Eighty human premolars were bonded with premolar stainless steel brackets as per manufacturer’s instructions. The teeth …

On the checking of g-coherence of conditional probability bounds

2003

We illustrate an approach to uncertain knowledge based on lower conditional probability bounds. We exploit the coherence principle of de Finetti and a related notion of generalized coherence (g-coherence), which is equivalent to the "avoiding uniform loss" property introduced by Walley for lower and upper probabilities. Based on the additive structure of random gains, we define suitable notions of non relevant gains and of basic sets of variables. Exploiting them, the linear systems in our algorithms can work with reduced sets of variables and/or constraints. In this paper, we illustrate the notions of non relevant gain and of basic set by examining several cases of imprecise assessments d…
