« L’homme-à-fourchette ». La construction du convive-modèle à la table de Buckingham Palace

2021

“Every meal is a lesson learned”. The Victorian saying warns of the risk of punishment that every guest constantly incurs. These sanctions often relate to the way in which one approaches, one selects, one handles the cutlery on the table. Indeed, the construction of the ideal guest, of his way of being with others and of behaving in relation to food, often and above all involves being a "model user" of table service. We will analyze this aspect from the images and speeches posted on the Windsors' Twitter account, the official websites of the Royal Family and the manners manuals they sponsor. Each of these supports manifests an aspect of the subjectivity of the ideal guest as a model-user of…

6-Methyluracil: a redetermination of polymorph (II)

2019

6-Methyluracil, C5H6N2O2, exists in two crystalline phases: form (I), monoclinic, space group P21/c [Reck et al. (1988). Acta Cryst. A44, 417–421] and form (II), monoclinic, space group C2/c [Leonidov et al. (1993). Russ. J. Phys. Chem. 67, 2220–2223]. The structure of polymorph (II) has been redetermined providing a significant increase in the precision of the derived geometric parameters. In the crystal, molecules form ribbons approximately running parallel to the c-axis direction through N—H...O hydrogen bonds. The radical differences observed between the crystal packing of the two polymorphs may be responsible in form (II) for an increase in the contribution of the polar canonical forms…

Naturalne spoiwa kostek nawozowych jako element zrównoważonej uprawy roślin

2016

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań wiązania organicznych i mineralnych komponentów n…

Estimating Regional Input Coefficients and Multipliers: The Use of FLQ is Not a Gamble

2014

Flegg A. T. and Tohmo T. Estimating regional input coefficients and multipliers: the use of FLQ is not a gamble, Regional Studies. This paper re-examines the Finnish evidence presented by Lehtonen and Tykkylainen on the use of location quotients (LQs) in estimating regional input coefficients and multipliers. They argue that the choice of an LQ-based method is a gamble and that there is no single method that can be recommended for general use. It is contended here that this evidence is erroneous and that the FLQ (Flegg's location quotient) yields results far superior to those from competing formulae, so it should provide a satisfactory way of generating an initial set of input coefficients.…

Mesure de la performance des agences bancaires par une approche DEA

2005

Using a DEA framework (Data Envelopment Analysis), we develop new performance indicators for integrated retail networks. A methodological discussion leads us to propose a productivity indicator which respects the criteria of controllability and transversal coherence. We then formalise the relationship between a performance indicator of a network's headquarters and the productivity of its various retailers. Finally, we combine these new indicators in crafting a management tool amenable to a system of balanced scorecards.

Improving Estimates Accuracy of Voter Transitions. Two New Algorithms for Ecological Inference Based on Linear Programming

2022

The estimation of RxC ecological inference contingency tables from aggregate data is one of the most salient and challenging problems in the field of quantitative social sciences, with major solutions proposed from both the ecological regression and the mathematical programming frameworks. In recent decades, there has been a drive to find solutions stemming from the former, with the latter being less active. From the mathematical programming framework, this paper suggests a new direction for tackling this problem. For the first time in the literature, a procedure based on linear programming is proposed to attain estimates of local contingency tables. Based on this and the homogeneity hypot…

Consumir la obra de terra. Los orígenes de la cerámica valenciana por el lado de la demanda (1283-1349)

2018

The origins of Valencian ceramic tableware, one of the most coveted products of the Late Middle Ages, have traditionally been explained from the supply perspective. The attention given to technological and stylistic–i.e. productive–aspects has tended to eclipse the issues that go beyond the objects themselves and affect the viewpoint of the consumer: to what extent was the demand for obra de terra by Valencian society key to the start of its production? This essay considers this matter using a sample of 232 probate inventories from between 1283 and 1349, to which will be applied quantitative analysis based on the historiography of consumption. It will be argued that, before the Black Death,…

From soil to soil-less in horticulture: quality and typicity

2013

In this review, the technique of soil-less cultivation of horticultural crops is analysed, the main differences between this and traditional cultivation techniques are described, and the advantages and disadvantages of each method in relation to the others are identified. Soilless cultivation has revolutionised various sectors of vegetable and floriculture production, and recent years have also seen interest being shown by Italian fruit crop producers, particularly those involved in table grape viticulture. The various issues related to the use of this technique are described in relation to the needs of the substrate, water management, and mineral nutrition of the different species, and to …

Microbial dynamics during green Sicilian table olive fermentations

2009

The production of green table olives is traditionally a spontaneous fermentation carried out by indigenous microflora. Variability of microbial raw material may result in changes in the qualitative aspects of final products (Silvestri et al., 2009). Table olives of five different green table olive cultivars (four Sicilian Brandofino, Castriciana, Nocellara del Belice and Passalunara and the Spanish Manzanilla) were produced according to a semi-industrial technology, in which lactic acid bacteria (LAB) role is partially replaced by lactic acid addiction. Transformation processes were studied by a combined strategy consisting of chemical, microbiological and sensory analyses. Yeasts harboured…
