Teacher satisfaction at the educational placement of students with special educational needs

2016

This study conducted a large-scale survey to investigate the satisfaction of Finnish primary school teachers toward the current educational placement of their students with special educational needs (SEN). Teachers were asked to recommend the most suitable educational placement for each of their SEN students from a pool of six alternatives: a mainstream classroom, part-time special education, a special classroom in the mainstream school, a special school, a state special school, or an institution. Data were obtained from 980 students representing 68 schools. The results showed that, in the majority of cases, teachers recommended a different level to the current level of placement for their …

Lost in space? The concepts of planetary phenomena held by trainee primary school teachers

1997

The teaching of science in primary education has, at least according to the behaviourist tradition, sought to eliminate pupils’ faulty conceptualisations of scientific phenomena. This paper suggests that such conceptualisations are an integral part of learning and should be encouraged. The paper begins by reporting on an experiment originally developed to elicit information on the various concepts of planetary phenomena held by prospective primary school teachers in Finland. Through examining their conceptions, however, students became aware of their own cognitive processes and the underlying logic and consistency of their thinking. The paper suggests that this awareness and the methodology…

The Role of Gender in Teachers’ Perceived Stress and Heart Rate

2008

Gender differences in cardiovascular variables in response to laboratory stressors have been described. In real situations, although occupational stress is considered one of the major causes of cardiovascular diseases, there are few studies that follow a psychophysiological approach, such as in a work context. In these settings, excessive environmental demands might produce nonadaptive emotional responses, depending on the way people perceive their work settings. Concretely, there are few published studies that take into account the changes of perceived stress (PS) and/or heart rate (HR) considering the ecological moment. Thus, our interest was to study the changes of both variables during…

Preparing Teachers for Teaching Probability Through Problem Solving

2018

In this paper we introduce the idea of solving problems by simulation with didactical intention. Based on this idea, we analyse the way we prepare the teachers to teach solving probability problems by simulation, in distinguishing whether the teaching is offered to prospective elementary teachers or secondary school teachers. The process of solving probability problems is seen as an inquiry process, which uses simulation as a resolution method with heuristic content, so that the preparation of teacher is then based on this approach. Therefore, prospective teachers should have the opportunities to learn about probability problems, about the process of solving probability problems, and about …

School teachers bullied by their students: Teachers´ attributions and how they share their experiences

2012

Abstract Previous studies suggest that many teachers worldwide are bullied by students. However, deeper understanding of teachers' bullying experiences; of their interpretations of the causes of bullying; and of how they cope with these experiences, is lacking. Using an Internet survey we examined the attributions made by Finnish elementary and lower secondary school teachers for their victimisation; the people with whom they share their experiences; and the links between these. Three kinds of attribution were identified: student-related, institution-related, and teacher-related. Selection of the persons with whom teachers shared their experiences was determined by the nature of the attribu…

TEACHERS’ READINESS TO IMPLEMENT THE ACQUISITION OF TRANSVERSAL SKILLS IN THE CONTEXT OF THE NEW STANDARD

2019

In today’s rapidly changing world, when information technologies are developing very fast, a new change of the paradigm of the educational system is needed. It means that a teacher’s pedagogical activities also have to change – from an educator to a cooperation partner in the teaching/learning process. National Centre for Education (NCE)  has worked out a new ”Competence approach to teaching/learning content”, the aim of which is to ensure the acquisition of the content of general education based on competence approach, and which embraces all stages in education. The objective of the article is to reveal the essence of competence approach and the readiness of primary school teachers to imple…

ETHNOLOGICAL RESEARCH AND TEACHING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF JYVÄSKYLÄ

1970

Publisher Summary This chapter presents ethnological research and teaching at the University of Jyvaskyla. The center of the administrative district of Central Finland, Jyvaskyla, is located in the center of the population of Finland, somewhat north of the place where three large water routes empty into the northern end of Finland's longest lake, Paijanne. Higher Finnish-speaking culture was now even officially acknowledged, which, among other things, led to the situation in which one of the main strongholds of the new culture received its location in Jyvaskyla, which from time to time competed successfully with the capital city for the position of the Finnish-speaking cultural center. In 1…
