Movements by Drawing: Avant-Garde Set-Design and Sound Landscapes

2018

The article deals with the study of visual images produced by the movement through the drawing’s set-design realized between 1920 and 1930, moment of theatre revolution, which saw the cooperation of different sectors of art, including photography, painting, architecture, cinema, dance, sculpture, and music. The visual values that triggered the theorization of the artistic avant-garde and, subsequently, the production of the scenographic drawing, in form and space, constitute a corollary of dynamic systems, a metaphor of the deconstructed movement through the figuration of the idea and at the same time signification of the interpretative distortion. The aim is to deepen the issue of movement…

A Proposed Methodology to Control Body Temperature in Patients at Risk of Hypothermia by means of Active Rewarming Systems

2014

Hypothermia is a common complication in patients undergoing surgery under general anesthesia. It has been noted that, during the first hour of surgery, the patient’s internal temperature (Tcore) decreases by 0.5–1.5°C due to the vasodilatory effect of anesthetic gases, which affect the body’s thermoregulatory system by inhibiting vasoconstriction. Thus a continuous check on patient temperature must be carried out. The currently most used methods to avoid hypothermia are based on passive systems (such as blankets reducing body heat loss) and on active ones (thermal blankets, electric or hot-water mattresses, forced hot air, warming lamps, etc.). Within a broader research upon the environment…

Validity of NMR pore-size analysis of cultutal heritage ancient building materials containing magnetic impurities

2007

NMR relaxation time distributions, obtained with laboratory and portable devices, are utilized to characterize the pore-size distributions of building materials coming from the Roman remains of the Greek-Roman Theatre of Taormina. To validate the interpretation of relaxation data in terms of pore-size distribution, comparison of results from standard and in situ NMR experiments with results of the mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) has been made. Although the pore-size distributions can be obtained by NMR in terms of either longitudinal (T-1) or transverse (T-2) relaxation times distributions, the shorter duration of the T-2 measurement makes it, in principle, preferable, although the dete…

«Un uomo di lettere». Ipotesi sul programma figurativo dei rilievi scultorei del pulpitum del Teatro di Sabratha

2020

After some considerations about the chronology of Theatre of Sabratha and on the internal organization of pulpitum reliefs, this paper puts forward the hypothesis of the attribution to Apuleius of the most part of the iconographic programme. In particular, Florida and Metamorphosis are suggested as direct sources of some scenes. The reconsideration of the pulpitum's first scene, starting from the left, previously interpreted as a sort of theatral academy, confrims this hypothesis. The scene represents a group of philosophers, strictly derived from the representation of the seven savants, as depicted on two well known mosaics. The iconography is adapted to the specific context, with the elim…

ASPETTI DI SOSTENIBILITÀ NEL RECUPERO DEI TEATRI STORICI

2014

It is well known as the "Italian" historic theater in our country is largely widespread, sufficiently stable in its typological configuration characterized by the stalls area with the boxes rows and the stage with the handling systems of stagecraft, behind a rich facade able to qualify the urban environment. As a result of the recent legislation bills, a number of public and private Italians authorities have begun an intensive recovery, value and protection of the theatrical architectural heritage present in own territories. However several conflicting proposals regarding the way of the maintenance work, highly variable in relation to attitudes brought, on one hand, to privilege stability, …

Rehabilitation of theatres in Sicily

2014

ABSTRACT: In Sicilian area, as well as elsewhere in Europe, the theatres built between the last decades of the XVIII century and the beginning of the XX century are progressively disappearing because of integrations and substitutions required by the new “modernity”, the change of use of the building itself that do not respect the original purpose. The current study, starting from a 1868 census carried on by the Home Office of the Italian Reign, punctually retraces the status of the surveyed theatres, and updates the list of those that were built afterwards, it also analyzes theatres’ state of maintenance, current use and occurred changes. In the most of the cases we are in front of “Italian…

Settore ICAR/14 - Composizione Architettonica E UrbanaIn 1970 Giuseppe Samonà coordinated a design team (with Vittorio Gregotti Gianni Pirrone and Alberto Samonà) for the project of the Civic Commercial and Cultural Centre of Gibellina Nuova. From this plan among the monuments just the town hall was built. The theatre was proposed later for a different place. The buildings should have been linked to a pedestrian axial gangway connected to an articulated artificial ground. The complex should have shown the unity between architecture and urban planning anticipating in some ways a later Samona’s reflection about the dialectic between urban and rural.

Ricerche a Solunto (2022)

2023

New Investigations at Solunto (2022) ∙ The last fieldwork campaign in Solunto by the University of Palermo, in the sanctuary above the theatre and in the baths near the agora (the North Baths), obtained some relevant results concerning both the building sequences and the architectural configurations. In the sanctuary, a clearer picture is emerging of the oldest layout, dating from the 4th century B.C. (1st phase). After the first reshaping of the street grid and of the urban layout (2nd phase), in the second half of 2nd century B.C., an overall restyling (3rd phase) gave the whole sanctuary area an impressive organization into terraces linked through ramps and stairways. A striking feature,…

Ricostruzioni digitali per lo studio degli spazi teatrali dall’età arcaica all’età imperiale: alcuni casi studio

2019

The contribution concerns digital reconstruction as a method for the study of theatrical spaces from the archaic age to the imperial age. After some preliminary observations on the characteristics Structures of Greek and Roman scenic buildings, some case studies are presented, examples of an experienced working method. Case studies include ikria and ekklesiasteria of Metaponto (7th-5th century BC), the Greek theater of Metaponto (4th century BC), the Greek theater of Tindari (III-II century BC), the Roman theater of Augusta Bagiennorum (1st century AD), with an interesting status quaestionis on the state of the findings and the added value of accurate 3D reconstructions.
