Integrable systems and moduli spaces of curves

2016

This document has the purpose of presenting in an organic way my research on integrable systems originating from the geometry of moduli spaces of curves, with applications to Gromov-Witten theory and mirror symmetry. The text contains a short introduction to the main ideas and prerequisites of the subject from geometry and mathematical physics, followed by a synthetic review of some of my papers (listed below) starting from my PhD thesis (October 2008), and with some open questions and future developements. My results include: • the triple mirror symmetry among P 1-orbifolds with positive Euler characteristic , the Landau-Ginzburg model with superpotential −xyz + x p + y q + z r with 1 p + …

Instrumental calculation, cognitive role-playing, or both?: self-perceptions of Seconded National Experts in the European Commission

2011

This is the authors’ final, accepted and refereed manuscript to the article Most work studying micro-processes of integration – i.e. how agents develop identities and decision-making behaviours within a particular institution – offers explanations based on either instrumental rationality or socialisation. This article proposes a two-dimensional framework that allows analysing under which conditions both logics of social action co-exist. Our empirical analysis employs a unique dataset from a 2011 survey of all 1098 currently active Seconded National Experts (SNEs) in the European Commission. We find that a) instrumental cost-benefit calculation and cognitive role-playing (as semi-reflexive s…

Bildungsexpansion, soziale Klasse und die Wahl von Latein als Strategie der Distinktion

2021

In times of educational expansion, privileged families are looking for new strategies of distinction. Referring to Pierre Bourdieus theory of distinction, we argue that choosing Latin at school a language that is no longer spoken and therefore has no direct value is one of the strategies of privileged families to set themselves apart from less privileged families. Based on two surveys we conducted at German schools, the paper analyzes the relationship between parents educational background and the probability that their child will learn Latin. Results indicate that historically academic families have the strongest tendency towards learning Latin, followed by new academic famil…

At the Risk of Exaggerating : How Do Listeners React to Hyperbole?

2003

The intensive focus on the reception process of figures of speech, in terms of the psychological processes operated on their understanding, explains that nowadays a crucial limitation in figurative language theories is the production process of non-literal forms, as joint activities between speaker and hearer. Since the object of study has traditionally been the figurative sentence, either in isolation or in the context of an artificially constructed text, it is not surprising that the collaborative nature of figures has been overlooked. This paper focuses on hyperbole, a long neglected trope, despite its pervasive frequency of occurrence and co-occurrence with other tropes in everyday spee…

Gaussian effective potential for the standard model SU(2)×U(1) electroweak theory

2008

The Gaussian effective potential is derived for the non-Abelian SU(2)×U(1) gauge theory of electroweak interactions. At variance with naive derivations, the Gaussian effective potential is proven to be a genuine variational tool in any gauge. The role of ghosts is discussed and the unitarity gauge is shown to be the only choice which allows calculability without insertion of further approximations. The full non-Abelian calculation confirms the existence of a light Higgs boson in the nonperturbative strong coupling regime of the Higgs sector.

Violation of the equivalence principle from light scalar dark matter

2018

In this paper, we study the local observational consequences of a violation of the Einstein Equivalence Principle induced by models of light scalar Dark Matter (DM). We focus on two different models where the scalar field couples linearly or quadratically to the standard model of matter fields. For both these cases, we derive the solutions of the scalar field. We also derive from first principles the expressions for two types of observables: (i) the local comparison of two atomic sensors that are differently sensitive to the constants of Nature and (ii) the local differential acceleration between two test-masses with different compositions. For the linear coupling, we recover that the signa…

Dynamical environments of relativistic binaries: The phenomenon of resonance shifting

2019

In this article, we explore both numerically and analytically how the dynamical environments of mildly relativistic binaries evolve with increasing the general relativity factor $\gamma$ (the normalized inverse of the binary size measured in the units of the gravitational radius corresponding to the total mass of the system). Analytically, we reveal a phenomenon of the relativistic shifting of mean-motion resonances: on increasing $\gamma$, the resonances between the test particle and the central binary shift, due to the relativistic variation of the mean motions of the primary and secondary binaries and the relativistic advance of the tertiary's pericenter. To exhibit the circumbinary dyna…
