Veniet Tempus (QNat.7.25): Stoic Philosophy and Roman Genealogy in Seneca's View of Scientific Progress
2014
Seneca's views on the future development of knowledge have often been interpreted as an enlightened anticipation of the modern faith in progress. And Seneca himself has been depicted as a sort of Condorcet avant la lettre. In the present paper, I argue that while it is extremely interesting to investigate the reception of Senecan patterns in modern thought, the writer's idea of scientific and moral enhancement should primarily be understood in the intellectual and socio-anthropological framework of ancient culture. Indeed, a reassessment of the evidence offered by the Natural Questions and the Moral Epistles shows that Seneca devises a broadly conceived spectrum of progress, which reflects …
Bild unserer irren Anwesenheit/auf der Oberfläche der Erde. L’immagine come storia naturale del presente nella poetica diW. G. Sebald
2017
The poem Nach der Natur by W. G. Sebald, real germinal place of its author’s subsequent literary production, is a salient moment of confrontation for today's philosophical gaze; our historical time and our own humanity are configured as “natural history” (Benjamin), in a compositional game in which the present time acquires the character of a timeless distance projecting it on the background of a mournful nature, entrusting to the roughness of the poetic material and to its conceptual weaving the task of an unprecedented presentification of some layers of reality of rare density.
OSL dating of sediments from the Gobi Desert, Southern Mongolia
2010
Abstract The present study focuses on the chronological relationship between alternating dune sand and silty water-lain sediments in the central part of the Khongoryn Els dune field in the Gobi Desert, Southern Mongolia. The 23 m high section evolved from the construction of a natural dam by west–east moving sand dunes and fluvial inundation by a river system from the mountain ranges in the south. To resolve the chronology of events, optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating was applied and from sedimentological and geochemical analysis the depositional processes could be characterised. Quartz OSL dating of these sediments is hindered by feldspar contamination. Thus, dating of coarse-g…
Numerical simulation of resonant activation in a fluctuating metastable model system
1998
We study the escape time from a metastable overdamped model system in the presence of two noise sources: a white noise and a random telegraph noise. The random telegraph noise controls the height of the potential barrier of the metastable system while the white noise mimics the presence of a given temperature. We report on numerical simulations about: (i) the average residence time of the system in the metastable state; (ii) the probability density function (PDF) of the residence time at various values of the correlation time T c of the random telegraph noise. Resonant activation is observed in the dynamics of the investigated system. The PDF shows different shapes for different values of τ…
Recent advances in space-time statistics with applications to environmental data: An overview
2003
[1] This paper introduces a special section based on general environmental scientific problems, with a particular focus on using atmospheric data. All the papers and authors provide the methodology to study, analyze, predict, and evaluate the spatial-temporal behavior and the complicated spatial-temporal structure of the data. The overall aim is to present up-to-date developments in spatial and spatiotemporal statistics in the field of the atmosphere, to present on-going research, and to discuss important problems to be addressed in the near future.
Organization of Production Processes through the Multi-Service Method by Performing some Identical Operations of the same Duration and Structure
2013
Organisation of production processes, by means of multi service method refers to the performance of attributions within a working system, using simultaneously or successively more inputs or more items in a single means of production, by one or more employees. In the specifically chosen case, in order to outline the advantages that shall be obtained after implementing the multi service method, we want to illustrate a situation where there are the execution conditions of certain identical operations, with the same duration and structure, in which case the running time of the performer and the means of production will be identical. Serving multiple machines finds application in all industrial …
Playing with Time in Digital Fiction
2015
The exceptional quality of digital fictions lies in their inherently dynamic nature, how they may be flexibly programmed to generate new content and alter the already existing contents. This adds a new temporal level, compared to traditional fictions. Digital games, especially, incorporate aspects of simulation and narration in their structure. As interactive and dynamic media form, games are specifically temporal in nature. They offer us the flexibility and preciseness of digital simulations, with the potential of psychologically engaging narrative qualities, which together open up a whole new field of experimenting with temporally dynamic media. Much of the new media fictions partake in a…
Physical simulation for real-time image/video retargeting
2012
Retargeting methods present content on arbitrary aspect ratio me- dia displays limiting distortions in relevant objects. This is done by means of applying non-homogeneous resizing operators across the whole media, constraining it to fit into the required size. Several succesful systems have been proposed to achieve image retargeting, while video retargeting is still challenging due to time consistency and computational complexity requirements. Two important con- tributes were proposed: non-homogeneous retargeting [Wolf et al. 2007] and improved seam-carving [Rubinstein et al. 2008]. The first one claims to achieve real-time performance but considers spa- tial coordinates separately. The lat…
Boosting working memory with accelerated clocks
2021
Our perception of time varies with the degree of cognitive engagement in tasks. The perceived passage of time accelerates while working on demanding tasks, whereas time appears to drag during boring situations. Our experiment aimed at investigating whether this relationship is mutual: Can manipulated announcements of elapsed time systematically affect the attentional resources applied to a cognitive task? We measured behavioral performance and the EEG in a whole report working memory paradigm with six items of different colors that each had to be reported after a short delay period. The 32 participants were informed about the current time after each 20 trials, while the clock was running at…
Validation of an explicative model of the successful aging process with psychological, physical, relational, and leisure variables
2015
Increasingly, research on the aging process tends to adopt a dual perspective emic (specific to a culture) and etic (universal), requiring further studies to address this cross-cultural approach. The aim is to obtain an empirical answer to the question of whether a model of successful aging raised from a different context such as the Taiwanese context, is suitable to represent this process in our elders. The sample consisted of 737 elderly. Socio-demographic-data and different scales to assess life satisfaction, leisure, health, and social support were collected. A structural equation model taken from Lee et al. (2011), in which leisure, health and social support predicted life satisfaction…
