Ethical issues of gamified ICT tools for higher education

2015

A recent trend in e-learning is the development of ICT tools with game elements to increase the motivation of using new technology in teaching and learning. In most cases, games possess different ethical constraints than regular e-learning systems. For this reason, additional implications and issues deriving from the combined development of games and e-learning technology have to be considered. During the development process of gamified e-learning systems as well as during the use of gamified ICT tools in education special attention must be paid to ethical constraints. This paper presents ethical considerations as to how to properly motivate teachers to adopt new technology in their teachin…

Business Intelligence Integrated Solutions

2017

Abstract A Business Intelligence solution concerns the simple, real-time access to complete information about the business shown in a relevant format of the report, graphic or dashboard type in order help the taking of strategic decisions regarding the direction in which the company goes. Business Intelligence does not produce data, but uses the data produced by the company’s applications. BI solutions extract their data from ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning), CRM (Customer Relationship Management), HCM (Human Capital Management), and Retail, eCommerce or other databases used in the company.

Business competencies and innovation capability in cross-border small regional enterprises

2017

This paper explores the socio-economic aspects of human capital, especially the IT users' innovation capability in regional cross-border small and medium-sized enterprises in Poland and in Germany. Socio-economic aspects of human capital are crucial for the socioeconomic development that may be achieved through virtual access to online learning tools and by diagnosing IT users' innovation capability and their business competencies, in relation to information and communication technologies. This paper presents an initial report on experimental research that was conducted online using the author's diagnostic tools. Conclusions and findings of this work contribute to socioeconomic development …

A fuzzy methodology to alleviate information overload in elearning

2013

Some aspects of eLearning experience can be en- hanced in a very natural way by using the basic tools offered by fuzzy logic. As a matter of exam- ple, consider the uncontrolled growth of informa- tion produced in a collaborative-oriented context, in which each participant (e.g. students, teachers) is able to insert and share new contents (e.g. com- ments, texts) concerning a university course. All the incrementally added pieces of information can be evaluated in several ways: by the intervention of a “dictator” (e.g. the teacher), using a rating form, or even according to the frequency of access. As contents rapidly become unusable for the effects of information overload, basic tools of fu…

Electronic system for assessing and analysing digital competences in the context of Knowledge Society

2019

The digital competencies of users, in general, and of public administration personnel, in particular, must allow the people access to graphical interfaces and applications, including databases. The use of digital competences is not simply about the emergence and use of computer tools to a certain level but also to develop new digital skills to face the challenges of data quality, responsibility, confidence in information received, the privacy of the user and the safety of its data. The study tool in this paper is managed and applied online, and the collection and centralization of data is done automatically, also ensuring information security. The basic method used in this paper is the mode…

Heat shock response in yeast involver changes in both transcription rates and mRNA stabilities

2011

We have analyzed the heat stress response in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae by determining mRNA levels and transcription rates for the whole transcriptome after a shift from 25uC to 37uC. Using an established mathematical algorithm, theoretical mRNA decay rates have also been calculated from the experimental data. We have verified the mathematical predictions for selected genes by determining their mRNA decay rates at different times during heat stress response using the regulatable tetO promoter. This study indicates that the yeast response to heat shock is not only due to changes in transcription rates, but also to changes in the mRNA stabilities. mRNA stability is affected in 62% of …

Integrating genome-wide genetic variations and monocyte expression data reveals trans-regulated gene modules in humans.

2011

One major expectation from the transcriptome in humans is to characterize the biological basis of associations identified by genome-wide association studies. So far, few cis expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) have been reliably related to disease susceptibility. Trans-regulating mechanisms may play a more prominent role in disease susceptibility. We analyzed 12,808 genes detected in at least 5% of circulating monocyte samples from a population-based sample of 1,490 European unrelated subjects. We applied a method of extraction of expression patterns—independent component analysis—to identify sets of co-regulated genes. These patterns were then related to 675,350 SNPs to identify maj…

Does pain intensity predict a poor opioid response in cancer patients?

2011

Abstract Aim The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that initial pain intensity is not a predictive factor of poor opioid response in advanced cancer patients, as suggested by a recent work. Methods A secondary analysis of one-hundred-sixty-seven patients referred for treatment of cancer-related pain was conducted. Pain intensity at admission was recorded and patients were divided in three categories of pain intensity: mild, moderate and severe. Patients were offered a treatment with opioid dose titration, according to department policy. Data regarding opioid doses and pain intensity were collected after dose titration was completed. Four levels of opioid response were considered:…
