The urban being between environment and landscape. On the old town as an emerging subject

2018

The landscape units of the Sicilian mountainous inland, as for the case of Petralia Soprana, are marked by the presence of ancient urban centres controlling the agricultural territory, from which they derived their own wealth, and to which they conferred landscape significance. The unity between economy and landscape has been interrupted by the radical transformation of the socio-economic structure and the technologic progress, which have eroded the consistency between structures and superstructures. We propose an assessment approach based on a synthesis of semiotic and phenomenological view. The approach mainly focuses on the basic concepts and contents of the valuation process that can be…

Levels of trace elements in human hair samples of adolescents living near petrochemical plants

2020

The aim of the study is a comparative analysis to investigate human hair metal profiles of adolescents residing near petrochemical plants (Sicily, Italy). We selected the small town of Augusta, Gela, and Pace del Mela, and a control area made up of the towns characterized by low anthropogenic activity. Twenty trace elements were measured in samples of scalp hair from adolescents (11–14 years old) of both genders. Hair samples were cleaned using a rigorous cleaning method, mineralized, and processed for analyses by inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In industrial sites, zinc was always the most abundant element, ranging from186 to 217 μg g−1. Following zinc, the elements …

Giovanni Filippo Ingrassia: A five-hundred year-long lesson.

2010

Giovanni Filippo Ingrassia was born five centuries ago in Regalbuto, a small town in the center of Sicily. After his medical course in Padua, under the guidance of Vesalius and Fallopius, he gained international fame as a physician and was recruited as a Professor of human anatomy in Naples and later in Palermo. He is remembered as "the new Galen" or "the Sicilian Hippocrates." He contributed to the knowledge of human anatomy through the description of single bones rather than the whole skeleton. In particular, he was the first to describe the "stapes," the "lesser wings of the sphenoid" and various other structures in the head (probably the pharyngotympanic tube) as well as in the reproduc…

Many national and international studies have concentrated on the evaluation and promotion of the inclusive qualities of schools. It is a complex issue which has led to wide debate and a variety of contributions which in turn highlight the need for a tool capable of measuring the inclusive quality of our schools in order to determine the empirical evidence regarding this topic. This article presents the results of an experiment in drafting a questionnaire in order to measure the inclusive quality of the school system perceived by its pupils. The questionnaire is intended as an evaluation and selfevaluation tool that enables the inclusive quality generated by the context to be measured as it is perceived by pupils. At the same time the tool allows reflection processes amongst teachers to be promoted so that they can implement educational activities which contribute to the planning and control of inclusive teaching practices. This contribution puts forward an original tool for measuring the inclusive quality of the school system perceived by pupils attending primary school in several Sicilian towns. It was administered in its definitive version to a sample of 1652 children. The psychometric properties of the tool and the significance it can hold in the areas of planning in research and of educational design are presented in this paper.Settore M-PED/03 - Didattica E Pedagogia Speciale

Accessibilità a Montalbano Elicona: un approccio multiscalare

2021

In any form of the built environment, in order to satisfy the requirement of accessibil- ity, there is a need to consider both material and intangible aspects through a multi- scalar approach. The architectural heritage does not sidestep this need. Any in-depth analysis or project needs to be designed whilst considering the relations and inter-connections between the building, public space and public services on an urban scale. This multi-scalar approach guided some studies carried out under the convention between the Department of Architecture of the University of Palermo and the Municipality of Montalbano Elicona, a small town of about 2,100 inhabitants in north-eastern Sicily. In this ca…

The influence of solid retention time on IFAS-MBR systems: analysis of system behavior.

2018

A University of Cape Town Integrated Fixed-Film Activated Sludge Membrane Bioreactor (UCT-IFAS-MBR) pilot plant was operated at different values of the sludge retention time (SRT). Three SRTs were investigated at different durations: indefinitely, 30 and 15 days. The organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus removal, kinetic/stoichiometric parameters, membrane fouling tendency and sludge filtration properties were assessed. The findings showed that by decreasing the SRT, the pilot plant could maintain excellent carbon removal efficiencies throughout the experiments. In contrast, the biological carbon removal showed a slight nitrification and was slightly affected by the decrease of the SRT, s…

Old towns in “smart cities” between conservation and metamorphosis. Pending European Union guidelines

2014

In reflecting upon the role of environmental capital as represented by old towns in smart cities, the author reveals the consequences of re-plastering the facade of ancient buildings while emphasizing the resulting risk of globalization of historic districts. This is followed by a critical consideration concerning the active protection of old towns and their cultural typicality and geographical context, prerequisites for the development of specific guide-lines for the European Union. Explanation is also provided about how the restoration dynamics of the old towns are irreversibly changing the urban landscape in European cities. Strict regulations regarding the preservation of European old t…

Interventi nel palazzo di città di Palermo dopo il sisma del 1823

2019

Founded in 15th century, Palermo’s Town-hall was repeatedly reformed in the following centuries. This contribution, based on an unplished archival document kept at the Municipal Historical Archive in Palermo, focuses on the interventions carried out in the building after 1823 earthquake. This was the occasion for a significant renovation of the interior spaces of the building, in particular, the sequence vestibule, atrium, staircase. Moreover, the document offers interesting information on the tecnichs and materials in use at the beginning of 19th century in Palermo’s building sites.
